It’s amazing how spring has sprung around here…the trees are budding out in their spring green finery and there’s a multitude of flowers blossoming. It’s going to be tough to leave on Sunday.

Our maple tree is budding already, so there’s hope for you when you get back here. For the three years we lived in Oregon, we never saw a rattlesnake although they lived in our valley. We were on the southern side, so there wasn’t any decent sunning spots for them.

We’re starting to organize a fundraising birdathon through our science classes. Exciting stuff!

I got a notice that Seekers732 archived their only remaining cache. I wish there was a way to notify people they can put caches up for adoption if they are getting out of the game. Oh well.

And….in other news, we’re leaving in just a bit to pick up our son and grand-daughter and head to the Owl Festival. She is *finally* getting to go, and will compete in the kids hooting contest. Trekkin’ and I went yesterday already, but we’re happy to go again. Last night we saw Ladysmith Black Mambazo in Viroqua. Fun stuff. Good luck at the casino, Jim. Is that the Battle Over Rice virtual? Spirit Rock is up that way, too.

    How’d the hooting go?

Ladysmith Black Mambazo came to UWEC when I was there during peak Paul Simon days. I was too stupid to go see them now, but they come up frequently as either “solo” artists or part of their collaboration with Simon on the playlist I have going during school. The current crop of kids don’t “get” them like they did years ago, but tastes are cyclical and exposure to different things is part of what makes us better people, so I don’t skip over them like I may when “70 minutes of Minecraft music” comes up. The kids really like that, and they sure work quietly when that stuff is playing, but I can only hear it so much.

I would’ve sworn I drove past a roadkill coyote this morning along 21 between Coloma and Adams. Chasing that roadrunner and lost?

We had a 2-hour delay today, which was about the same amount of time it took me to use a tank full of gas in the snowblower. Almost didn’t make it to work on time. Roads were great, snow wasn’t bad to throw, it’s just a matter of how long it takes to walk the distances I need to walk in order to clear out all the areas we try to keep clean. I didn’t really finish the job.

Hope everyone got out to vote during the primary today.

New superintendent this year. No late starts/early releases when other schools have been. No snow days yet either.

We haven’t had a late start in at least 15 years. We’re controlled by the bus company. Too many drivers have jobs that they go to after their morning route, so they can’t drive if there is a delay. Somehow, though, they have been able to get enough drivers for an early dismissal on a few occasions.

When schools owned the buses, they had more flexibility.

Early release today due to impending weather. Will we start on time tomorrow?

I don’t see a down side to this. Theoretically, if a cache owner isn’t able to maintain their own stuff, they have the option to put it up for CR. And if the CO is out of the game, maybe its better for the cache to go away as well. Looking forward to what the new BOD has in store for us.

Here’s the problem with this: if a CO just quits the game, who is going to put them up for CR? We just lost 6 or so caches to archive within my 30 mile notification radius. The look like great caches, and I hated to see them archived, but the CO said they are no longer active. I guess I have LTF on the last one I linked to. No notice from the CO if he pulled the caches or just archived them. I don’t know if he was ever active on here to post a request for a CR either. Then what do we do? This has been my biggest concern about CRs in general. So many caches get archived, but if the CO isn’t on here, and doesn’t post any indication about the cache being pulled….then what do we do?

BTW, the cache I found was a very well disguised cache, with jumpy GPS at the location. I could probably find it again and would love to recycle it as one of my own – if it is still there. With the snow we have now though it would be almost impossible to find.

Now would be a good time to make a change.

in reply to: Increase number in LCG to 1000 #2065813

I spend (too much?) time looking at the LCG list. So many of them are either in the NW, not winter friendly, or most likely missing. The closest several to me are multis that have had missing stages/finals reported years ago but nothing has been done to either archive (gasp) or maintain (!) them.

I am not opposed to getting more on the list, but I’m wondering if that would really change the composition of the list.

Not sure the split could be done easily, but I could see a large discrepancy build up quickly between the time frame for caches to qualify in the north compared to in the south. The same caches would be lonely in the north while the numbers in the south would turn over quickly and the “lonely” caches wouldn’t be very lonely.

The closest 2 to me require scuba gear, not sure if those will be found any time soon, plus one clearly indicates that the cache was missing the last time it was “found” but because the CO was with the divers, they counted it as a find. Not complaining about that as a find, but I’m wondering if that 5/5 is really there.

I may as well plus this cache, if someone wants to find a really lonely cache. I had plans to go to find it multiple times when we lived in Oregon, but always had to cancel. It was just over 60 miles as the crow flies from our old house (over 100 driving miles, but still not bad for out there). Self promotion, never solved in 4 years.
