Quite a change in attitudes last night as I was canvassing. Two nights ago I feared for my life. Last night, someone offered me a beer. Also placed a new cache…I should start working on the puzzle while I have time.

Just curious what you were canvassing for. I’m sure we could swap stories. It was raining cats and dogs for about an hour this morning, and it looks like we might get hit again this afternoon and tomorrow as well.

I’m canvassing for the upcoming Census, verifying addresses before the big mailing, and yes, I have some stories. When I ran for Assembly I hit over 10,000 doors but this job has more stories than that one because I’m in a much different role. No, I can’t share them on here.

On a different note, I got a message this morning about my latest puzzle cache. Seems someone went to the dummy coordinates to look for the cache. I figured they must be new to the game and gave them a general hint about solving the puzzle first before looking for the container and finding the coordinates within the cache page instead.

I had time now to look up their profile. Over 1000 finds. Hmm??? Then I saw they only had 16 ? finds and all of there were solve-on-site. That makes sense. I think I’ll edit the description to reflect this. Glad I had the dummy coordinates in a parking lot and not the middle of a farm field.

School year is going good. We got approval for our loan to fix things. The house may finally start to be a home soon.

I’ve noticed a change in myself since moving back to Wisconsin: I’m much more cautious about personal safety when caching. As I think back about some of the risks I took driving to/from caches or the actual scaling of (what we in Wisconsin would consider to be) mountains, and now I doubt whether I should park at a wayside and look for a cache like this. Keep in mind, I’ve climbed over 1000 feet to get to some caches and this one and this one were two of my real regrets for not getting to before we left. Maybe its because I think about being in tight quarters and that can get me anxious, but climbing and even walking along narrow paths doesn’t bother me?

Speaking of archiving caches, the sooner Lakotah Challenge gets archived the better. The guy that left a message on my phone really sounded confused that we all think the cache is in play. They thought it was going to be archived three years ago.

One of these days I’m going to get my caching supplies to the new house. I probably have over 200 containers mostly ready to be hidden, but still at our old house. It gets frustrating when I drive past a great hide location, but none of my containers in the electric geomobile work there.

However, barring a reviewer concern, my WI hide #2 should be in play soon. Enjoy the puzzle. We should have our TB Hotel in play soon. Just need to clear some brush and get the tractor around to move the hotel. It’s not close to being finished, but I need to get some TBs back into circulation and I haven’t come across anything I trust to place some of these bugs in.

Taking our kids back to Marshfield tomorrow. Expecting another round of “we don’t know” talks.

We’ve been working on getting some sort of guardianship for our daughter (she just graduated (on time!) last year) because her anxiety is debilitating most days. The guy from the county office called and talked to my wife. He gave her the impression that, because she can talk and doesn’t have a brain injury, there isn’t much we can do. He suggested a workshop this Friday, as did a teacher that worked with us while she was in school. Guess we go and see what they tell us. It’s so frustrating because she knows that she can’t care for herself, let alone work, and wants to have us make big decisions so she can focus on herself and learning how to regain control of herself.

School year has started off well. We got a furnace installed before the cold weather started. Talked to the bank yesterday about getting a loan against the electric geomobile to get wiring work, chimney work and buying an oven, plus whatever else we can afford after that is done. They just need a little more paperwork to prove we have the income we say we do (losing our daughter’s disability pay hurt a little).

Almost no other time to do things other than teach, then drive around for Census work, but that lets me cache along the way. If you get a chance to find the Camelot caches east of Rome, they’re recommended (even though I didn’t find one of them yet). The WSQ just north of Big Flats gets high marks too.

Hope to get time to get to one of the social events one of these days, but it may not happen until next year.

Hopefully this will be a moot point by the time the next list is made, but I talked to the campground that Lakota Challenge was hidden on. They said the cache has been gone for several years – since the tornado went through. It it isn’t archived by GC, we should take it off the list because there isn’t anything there.

I don’t know where I left off in my last screed, but I do have a house for sale if someone wants to live in Sandland. 🙂

First day of school with all kids here, we run only freshmen the first day to get them acquainted with the building.

Hi, remember me? I think I’ll start all my posts like that from now on, as much as I have had time to post here.

Tying up loose ends from last post:

We, as of yesterday, have a furnace! Still no oven. Electrical needs substantial work. Chimneys need work.

We lost three chickens to a red fox. Decided to pen them in. No losses since then. My wife saw the fox once, but that’s it. Tried putting out a live trap with chicken bait, but no luck yet.  We just had our 4 turkeys butchered by one of the Amish guys I’ve met (more later). They decided to just sit around the food and eat all day. Got costly and hurt our other birds’ ability to eat. Final straw was when they ganged up on one of our geese and held her down while pecking at her head. They were separated from the rest until processing day. Four girls have a foot infection so our egg production is down right now, which isn’t bad because we were getting a dozen a day with no way to get rid of them during the summer. (More later)

Computer is making a funny noise so I guess I will finish this at work tomorrow.

Still no furnace, although the guy stopped out to look at things to give us an estimate. Old stovetop taken out, but still no working oven. Birds almost have their permanent roosts built in the barn.

Daughter’s graduation party went well despite the humidity & heat. Very small crowd, but when you graduate from an alternative program and home school that, there are not many classmates to come. Saw a couple of my uncles/aunts we haven’t seen in years. My dad made it down, but he’s not driving because of his heart. Still no long-term fix for him, but they will probably be going in to work on things in the next few weeks. Diagnosis – gradual heart failure and arrhythmia  (he’s a very active 83). Worst part for him is they said no golfing or bowling, so he drives his scooter around or watches TV. It’s driving him crazy.

Wow. I live 11 miles from the oldest non-virtual and haven’t found it yet. We stopped once in the parking lot but had other plans. Guess I will have to stop there again sometime soon!

    Ongoing moving saga update:

Still no furnace, stove top, oven or garage door openers. After trying to work through a women I work with to get a trailer to haul our Kubota tractor to our new house to be able to cut acres of grass and till our garden, we called U-Haul to get a trailer. Website wasn’t working, so I called Sunday night. Great experience! They had one in Coloma and my wife could pick it up when I was done with summer school at 11:30 and meet me at the old house. They called later to confirm said appointment.

School gets out on Monday, I check my phone to see my wife is, in fact, in Coloma and proceed to meet her there. As I’m driving, she calls to tell me that she doesn’t see the trailer we need in the parking lot. The girl there says she doesn’t normally do trailers, and the guy that does isn’t coming in today. AND she doesn’t see us in her system to be picking up a trailer. I hang up, pull into a boat launch (no cache there?) and look up the number that confirmed my trailer. Coincidentally, U-Haul called at 11:45, as I was picking up my phone to call them. They informed me that they didn’t have a trailer in Coloma despite the email and conversation I had the previous night. I needed to go to Waupaca, and return the trailer to Waupaca. Reception was bad, so I had them call my wife and that’s when I started thinking about how this was not good for us.

Eventually, we scrapped the U-Haul (no charge) and found a place in town that rented along with doing several other things we needed now or will need soon. Nice change of pace for how things have been! Brought the tractor to the new  house rather uneventfully, especially when my wife and I are trying to figure out things together.

Took me three hours to do a 10 minute switch on our tractor yesterday, but got tilling done and will be doing more when I get home today.

Day 2 of summer school. Today’s lesson plan includes geocaching with compasses.

I heard that the local community college is offering a geocaching class. Haven’t had time to look who the instructor is though.
