Bump in the night

The mentality of some locals out here isn’t too far from that expressed in CO. Very much an area where you stand your ground and are extremely wary of anyone coming onto their property, even if that property is public land (and there is a ton of that out here).
I’ve also had some really great experiences, and the local businesses (all five of them) really have welcomed me placing caches in the area because they have noticed people from out of town stopping to shop, even one guy from Germany!

I know there was a thread talking about power trails, but here goes one for you!

Just updated my profile and saw how old those oldies were I found today! Two were within the first year of caching and the other was an early ’02 hide. In the past week, I’ve bumped all my old WI caches off my list except for World Wide Quarters (it’s going to take some doing to get that off my top 20) and found a moving cache – which was the CO’s car/puzzle cache. I’ve been heading into northern California when I get the chance. Plenty of old ones there, but I’m down to driving 40+ minutes to get a cache if I head south; east is a cache desert because I’ve found all of them within 90 minutes of driving; north is worse than east because there are almost none that way; west is Klamath Falls. I have over 100 left to find within the greater KF metro area, but it is like caching in Green Bay and I am not really fond of urban caching. Guess it is like living in the Northwoods, with mountains thrown in for fun and inconvenience.
All I need to do now is find someplace close that is having a CITO. The closest earthcaches are over an hour from here. 🙁
I do have my puzzle cache all solved and ready to be found once that time rolls around. Been knocking out the puzzle caches except for the ones on my list (in other thread). Those just make me sit there and ????
Got a call from the Red Cross today asking if they could suck my O- blood. They said the nearest blood bank is X miles away, but the dude calling me from Portland didn’t realize that there is no straightline driving down here. KF is “12” miles away but takes 30 minutes of non-rush hour driving. They said, oh. We talked about the possibility of a drive occurring in the near future. The next one will be at school, when I planned to donate anyway, but the kids haven’t set a date yet. WI Red Cross never called me.

7 qrts? So everything that was in there? Someone leave out the drain plug? Was there oil on the engine or under it? There aren’t valve covers caps anymore…Missing dipstick. That is a lot of oil.
I put in 2 1/2 quarts before leaving my daughter’s, another 1 1/2 quarts after about 2 hours on the road, another quart about an hour later, and two more quarts when I got to Shawano. All the oil was underneath, nothing was missing or lose, and now it’s not leaking at all…I’m as dumbfounded about that as the mechanic. So now the question is, do we take the camper to Door Co. this weekend with the Jeep…or not? Let’s put it to a vote here in the forums!
I remember Car Talk having someone call in with something like this… Something to do with the engine parts warming up and leaking, but not when it cooled down. That’s all my engine know-how.

Found some oldies today. Wish HP2 would’ve updated their logs on one because I was at the wrong level on a bluff and wasted a good 25 minutes walking around looking where it wasn’t. I’m sure they would’ve had words or pictures that would’ve pointed me in the right place faster.
Taught a muggle I drove up on that was parked within 5′ of a D5 how to play the game. Showed her where things could be hidden and while talking about what they can look like, I put my hand on the cache. Found faster than any other cache today, and a D5! She is going to sign up and keep an eye on the caches where she ranches (on public land) which is good because the CO for those is inactive.

Squeaks are more like big chipmunks or grey squirrels. They use what we would consider deer rifles to shoot them. It’s like deer season except you can legally shoot them from inside your truck. People do. They drive out into fields and sit there with the rifle out the window. Waiting.
Crops are alfalfa or potatoes here, so easy line of sight for acres. No hunting through corn rows. The best sig is no sig.
Happy cache-verary to me! Might be able to get to town to find one too.
As we were watching people walk around downtown yesterday, we were saying that nobody would really believe the way people look out here unless we took pictures. We didn’t take pictures. Easy version: you ever wonder where the late-night people at Walmart go to during the day? Answer: here
When I won the 50/50 yesterday, the girls at the booth wanted to know if I would by raffle tickets for the other fundraiser. Prize = a gun of my choice, pistol or rifle, any caliber I wanted. I looked at them, and said, “I may be the only person in this county that wouldn’t want to win, but you can have my money.” It’s going to be interesting teaching government out here. The guys at the next booth chimed in, they offer $1500 scholarships each year. They fund it through raffling off…a gun. I bought two tickets there. As they were joking about my lack of a gun, they also started razzing a guy walking past behind me. “Why don’t you enter, you will a (forgive my ignorance about the caliber)” The guy replied: “I already have four of those and three of (the second prize)!”
It seems the top form of entertainment during the summer is shooting ground squirrels. There was a guy with a full-on folding two-person deer stand complete with cover to keep you out of the sun set up in the first field outside of town. Parked his pickup under the stand. He’s up there with a cooler, huge scope and a rifle. He was there all day.
I think the drought is making the population of “squeaks” explode. Ground that would normally be too wet for them to tunnel through is now bone dry. This means they dig into the irrigation ditches and cause flooding whenever we get some rain. Haven’t had a problem caching yet with angry property owners caching.

Only smoke around here is blowing up from the fire south of Mt Shasta. All burning is prohibited
