You have it! Just read in tonights paper about a 12 year old young man who bagged a 528 pound black bear in Bayfield County.

Oh, that kind of bear hunting… 8)

Sometimes coins gone for years will reappear.

I know you have been a member for a long time, so I’ll ask. What has been the longest period of time so far that a coin has been missing before it showed up again?

This game has really become all about the numbers and much less to do about the experiences, learning, visting “cool” places, etc. Puzzle solves are passed out like candy to anyone that wants them, EC answers are shared as are the final stage coords for multi’s. I’ve also had cachers tell me flat out they don’t bother to get out of the car to sign the log (or find the cache) on low D/T P&G caches (they assume that being in the vicinity is “good enough”).

DING DING DING! That’s the correct answer.

It comes down to an individuals integrity. I care about it when people who are less than forthcoming log a dishonest log but many will slip thru the cracks. I respect those of you who valiantly police the fact but I don’t choose to dwell on it. I know that I personally play the game fairly and I can honestly say I do. I also know many individuals that don’t, and they choose to be dishonest. Do they derive the same pleasure I do from this game? Maybe? To a great extent? But they also know that others out there will eventually call them on their integrity.

I have never deleted a log because of incorrect answers and believe me, I’ve gotten many with incorrect answers. I just want people to show that they were actually there and put in a little bit of thought into it. I bet that a lot of EarthCache owners are like that so you shouldn’t be too intimidated by the process. It’s the no answers at all thing that really drives me crazy.

The more E.C.’s I do the more I enjoy the exchange with the owners when one is received. So far all of the exchanges have been very nice and helpful. A category of cache that I avoided in the beginning that has now become one I put on the list to check out. Thanks to all of those who put in the time and effort to create them.

Oh this is getting so frustrating! I’m estimating here but I bet that 20 out of the last 25 or so EC “found it” logs I have gotten I’ve had to contact the finder to ask for answers. Come on people! Sorry, I just had to rant because this is getting frustrating. It makes me want to quit creating them.

I need to do some of your E.C.s.

I’m the other side of the coin. It took me a while to get going on Earthcaches due to the fact that I always thought I would get answers incorrect and have to make multiple trips. I have pleasantly found out that in many of the answer submissions I often get nice responses back if I make an error or have a question. Beyond the cache owner call of duty but boy is it nice.

I basically ignore the “trade even on Trackables” request by COs. Trackables are meant to MOVE, not to be swapped like swag. Groundspeak has even referenced that fact in their weekly bulletin.

Good point, thanks for the reminder.

    Amen!

Know how you feel. When I started geocaching in 2009, my wife gave me 3 nice geocoins as a birthday gift.
    1) Went missing on its first move.
    2) In the hands of the same individual since shortly after release.
    3) Finally showed up on the radar after a year, “SO” there might be hope.

I honestly don’t do much of anything with trackables anymore. Got soured so fast. I will move some on occasion but only when I know what its mission is in order to help it along. Some cache owners frown on taking a trackable and not leaving one so I am somewhat hesitant.

I write it off to the fact that there are many unknowledgeable cachers out there. Thinking its some sort of swag and not knowing it’s a trackable. Grabbing it and losing it or forgetting about it or it’s cool and I’m going to keep it.

NAH, NAH, NAH, NAH, NAH… I’m not listening to you… 🙄

Seriously, When I discovered Big Arb Ruins (GCD8E) back in 2010, I was sold right then and there about the value of an ammo can cache. A cache placed in 2001, what I believe to be the original cache, looking at the logs, caching history in my hands.

Congratulations Rod! That’s was one of my favorite Virtuals so far in my cache finding adventures. Wouldn’t you love to take that vehicle for a test drive to see just how good it is!

I realize our wonderful ammo boxes in the woods are swiftly becoming a thing of the past…

NO, NO, NO, NO! As long as I can find them for $15 bucks or less, I’m going to use them! If an ammo can works there, I’ll put one in. If it get stolen, I’ll replace it with an ammo can. But don’t expect one to be coming to an urban center near you in the near future. I don’t see myself placing them there. Think rural! 8)

(This comment comes from a cacher who has not had a cache stolen…Yet 😀 )

in reply to: Clever hide or big problem??? #1963947

    Big Problem.

I enjoy cemetery hides but don’t do as many as I could. I personally have a problem with this when it’s the tree next to the grave stone. Often it’s a cedar and there’s one on each side of the marker. You have to be digging around and you’re tramping on the ground of the grave site. Putting a person “on” the site is even less desirable in my opinion.

BUT, I do love it when the cache owner has pointed out in the cache page some remarkable stones that exist there.

I haven’t gone anywhere… except all the places that geocaching has taken me over the years. 😀 In addition to serving as one of the WGA founders and the first president of the WGA, and then later serving as VP and secretary, I have been a reviewer for Geocaching.com for more than nine years (as IowaAdmin). Check out my reviewer blog at http://iowaadmin.blogspot.com. I’m still out there finding geocaches and maintaining my caches (I.D. is kbraband), including Pike Powder Hike. When my wife and I cache together, we use the team name active2gether. Wish I could attend the picnic at Pike Lake this weekend but I have an annual commitment to serve as one of the lead safety kayakers for the swim portion of the Wisconsin Iron Man race in Madison.

Thanks for sharing. I have read many of your posts. Yet there are still many out there that placed wonderful caches many years ago that were adopted and life happened to them. I hope someday they might reappear in logs.

I’m waiting for the one with the water bottle rack, GPS unit quick release mount and built in frog gig… 😯

My present stick, a gnarly old maple branch. It has character. If I grow my hair out and grow a beard, I’d look like Moses…

I really enjoyed the post. So much of what was said is what I really enjoy about geocaching.

The only thing I think I enjoy a little more is looking back at the early logs of finders from long ago and reading what they said, and then wondering where they went.

    Thanks!

I have found that condensation is a problem in PVC pipe caches. Never found actual water, but lots of damp stuff inside.

I knew someday someone would find a use for those little moisture packs/pills that come in so many products 🙂
