    Congratulations and excellent choice!

My wife and I are taking a long weekend from work to go up north to the cottage this weekend and when I planned the trip I originally had us going thru the Appleton area to grab some Wisconsin oddities and Virtuals until the Wizard of OC popped up. Needless to say, her being a major league fan of anything from the movie, our plans and route got changed. We will be following in your footsteps! Have already checked your logs and it looks like fun.

    Darn… No flying monkey emoticon!

    Welcome!

Which one do you have planned for 500? Always looking for interesting caches down south to bookmark if I can get down there 🙁

    I like this comment!

The flip side of the coin, sometimes when I find a cache I really like (special place, memories, the experience), I tend to get long and wordy in my log. I would hope that this wouldn’t be looked down on.

Cache with a springer spaniel… You’ll come out clean yet the dog will collect his and your share, then wait till your spouse can’t stand the matted fur anymore and she de-burrs him for you…

Seriously, wrapping the hand in tape seems to work well. Yet they aren’t something that really bothers me. Somewhat therapeutic in removing. The easiest way I believe is to just keep an eye on the area you walk thru and avoid the buggers. Once you learn to recognize the plants, you start spotting them yards away. The type you got in to there are really easy to brush with your hand in to one mass clump and easily remove from a smooth area of the clothing.

Tom, Are those friends of yours “screamers?”

That is the origin of the project. We call them “Yardgoyles”. Sculpture idea courtesy of Dan Reeder.

Mrs. Northwoods and I are into Halloween big time. Every year there is a different theme at our house. McZombies, Graveyards, Haunted just about everything. Being a teacher in a small K-12 school, we get every kid and many off Island connected kids. The creatures in the photo are one of the many projects I have created with students in my art class, and the kids really enjoy them. They are also a regular Halloween participant at our house.

    …the REAL cause is micros.

I think this may be a larger part of the problem than anyone wants to admit.

If it’s a micro on a guardrail or in as pine tree and no more in the cache page, expect a short log on the page. I for example, will use them as a numbers builder sometimes just before a milestone. I try to put a little more in the web page log, but lets face it. How wonderful are they except for building the numbers. Just how beautiful was the traffic on the highway?

Now there are exceptions, a puzzle that may have been tricky to solve, then the micro was the cache. O.K., you now have something to talk about. “Puzzle was fun, we had to ask the neighbor ladies husband to find the final answer because he’s the only mortician we know”. You get what I mean.

A larger cache offers more possibility for the “unknown” in the container. Sometimes you are surprised and that often comes out in the cache log. Putting effort into were you place a cache and/or a story behind it often leads to a more interesting log.

My final observation is that often the numbers people have some of the lamest and shortest logs. They are about the search and the conquest.

All in all, as has been stated over and over, everyone plays in their own way. I would like to see more in the cache logs and every now and then, people share those experiences. If a person is unhappy with what they get, think about how you could personally make the experience better for those out there and watch for those really great logs.

Wouldn’t be a problem for me.

I always carry a compass in my pack and know how to use it as well as pace a distance. Comes in handy when you’re in a deep valley or other extreme terrain.

The most recent wonderful experiences… So many! Here’s two. August 27th I was out grabbing a few caches, and on one, an older gentleman came up to my vehicle as I was checking out the next cache on my laptop. Looking at me with a gruff expression, I quickly rolled down the window and introduced myself and explained what I was doing. The frown softened a bit. We continued to visit and talk, he told me about his family, his wife and her stroke, problems, his worries, many subjects. After at least a half hour of visiting, he was grinning and smiling, and we shook hands and wished each other well as we moved on. Taking that small amount of time out of my day, I believe made his day a little bit better. A simple park and grab made it possible. Two caches latter, I was rewarded with acres of the most beautiful landscape of flowering plants at another cache.

just remember cause its a 4wheel do not mean one can drive every where…

I statement my father would always recite was, “With 4 wheel drive, you just get stuck even worse.” I took that to heart, and drive in 2 wheel with 4 in reserve. It’s surprising how seldom I use 4 wheel and where I have traveled in two. Clearance is an issue; you learn real fast to drive slower and feel the terrain and avoid the surprises.

Just how far north of Gresham? And do you really want to test out that trucks limits?

If so, as I’ve said before in a few forum posts, head to the Keweenaw Peninsula and down the Mandan Road (series of 20 some). In addition, head to the end of the peninsula to the Rocket Range Virtual. Won’t be disappointed, unless you get stuck…

You will climb hills, cross creeks, traverse craters and have a unbelievable time.

To the northwest and closer, you have Mt. Whittlesey, Berkshire Mine and Eagles Peak caches south of Mellen. Not quite as difficult, but if you come at them from the east, they are a real hoot.

Most likely a bit out of your travel path, but I enjoyed it immensely in June…

The Keweenaw Peninsula and the Mandan Road. 20+caches, several Virtuals dependent on your route and you hit HWY 51 on your return. Copper Harbor is rustic and beautiful and I am already planning to go back. The 20+ caches on the Mandan Road are well done and the road(?) is a riot if you don’t drive a subcompact.
