Welcome! You will find some great advise on great cache sites to visit on the WGA site. (My personal preference is the caches that take you in to the boonies or the historical.)

I have ties to Ely, Minnesota (before I started geocaching) and am looking forward to getting back in to the area to explore again.

The Mapsource topographic maps were on my Christmas list.

I was naughty but it sounds like you were nice!

    Forth thought?

The Garmin Communicator when it appears shows up-loads for DeLorme, Magellan and Garmin. One time for some reason it defaulted to the DeLorme and it took me a bit to realize this. After a clicked for Garmin it worked fine.

The most recent communicator version is 2.9.3.0 older version might cause the error or inability to locate.

Saw this post last evening, but didn’t have my GPS unit at school to answer or possibly confuse you more… Thank goodness Team Deejay and Bye The Tie beat me with what I hope are better solutions.

I purchased my Map 60CSx shortly before they up-graded to the new unit. The part number for my catalog (and yours?)is 190-00482-00 Rev. E (If this helps).

I’ve also heard of reconditioned units that have a difference in the way they present. If your unit is one of those; just a thought.

Depending on what maps you load or don’t load (ie. topo, city navigator, blue water), you’ll get more icons.

I’m very excited with the direction of/and activities that the WGA is behind. I believe they are doing a good job.

These are two areas I would put on my to-do list.
    1. If you look at the members list on the website, I see few north of HWY 29. Of those on the list, I see infrequent participation on the site, listed by their last visit. I think they have a a voice to share but they aren’t using it. I want to know why.

    2. Outreach into the schools, clubs, organizations. The WGA grows when we grow. We all bring something to this activity that we can share with others.

These are only two of the many questions I’m looking for more information and answers on.

in reply to: South Florida? #1942305

When Mrs. Northwoods visited her mom in Naples, Florida last winter, she asked me to find her a few caches to take her on.

“My” first choice was a multi: “Pittsburgh Transplant Trail 2” (GCHVGR), 11+ miles. My mother in law is spry, but not that spry for her age. So they chose “A Swamp Thing”, (GCHO7O). Cache was weak but the “Corkscrew Sanctuary” was wonderful.

in reply to: "Challenge" Caches #1942319

I view them as positive. A challenge cache that has just appeared in this associations forum is one that I’m looking forward to completing (GC2M3MW). I’ve been to a few of the sites already and look forward to visiting more.

As far as completing any, no. There are two in Northeast Wisconsin that could qualify as challenge caches with a slight tweak, but aren’t presented as such. Others, I’m in the beginning stages of working on.

I like the idea of/and the potential for bringing the cacher to a series of caches to finish a “quest”. I definitely think they benefit the game and increase the interest. As with the Challenge I mentioned above, I don’t have to finish it to enjoy the steps leading up to it but it becomes a goal.

I’m sure there might be some negatives that some individuals might identify as well as variations on the challenge, but then everyone has the choice of not participating in a challenge.

in reply to: Your two-year term #1942190

If you make a commitment you follow thru with that commitment!

You put 100% into any job you take on.

I would hope that after the term if I did step down, the board and members would be caught totaly by surprise. “Never saw it coming!”

Excuse the crude reference, but I don’t “pee” in the pool! That’s not to say I won’t splash or make waves!

in reply to: How would you spend your caching time? #1942182

I would first relocate my residence to the mainland to be able to achieve this goal.

Second, I personally like to find an interesting “core” cache (one that I find particularly interesting) and work a radius around this one locating the others and getting to know and learn more about an area. Numbers would be adjusted when needed.

Now the reader needs to read into my answer what I mean by my answer…

in reply to: Which one #1942265

Red Wire (With the assumption that “te” is actually suppose to be “the”)

Red are generally hot wires and it’s necessary to keep cool in communications and interactions.

Blue are usually used in multi-circuit connections and its important to have good communication with the group.

We had the same experience with our Cocker Spanial Madison many years ago while hiking in the Yellow River State Forest in Iowa. This trap was just off the hiking trail a few feet, and I don’t recall any water nearby…can’t remember for sure. Madison let out a cry that I’ll never forget, but she also only had bruises after being let out of the trap.

This is something to be concerned about and aware of, but also kept in prespective.

I’ve been fortunate to never encounter this while out bird hunting or just hiking with one of my dogs. Some friends, different story, ticks are another matter, boy I hate those buggers!

Being an individual that spends a great deal of time in the outdoors caching as well as hunting, I can see the concern many people feel about this type of encounter. I’m not a trapper yet I wanted to become familiar with this tool. Personally, I would feel confident enough to remove a trap from my Springers leg if he ever encountered one. This is the result of going into a farm and fleet type store and actually playing around with them to figure out how they work. They are quite easy to remove if you become familiar with them and how they work. This may seem like a ridiculous idea for some of you, but familiarity with an item would develop confidence. An additional thought is to take a Trapper Education class. They are offered throughout the state, the cost is $12 and even though you have no intention of trapping, you can learn how they work, where they might be located, what to look for, etc. Develop a knowledge and confidence about something you might now be unsure about.

This is the DNR Website for Trapper Education Classes:

WAIT: BOAT, BOAT, Did someone say something about a BOAT…

    in reply to: Controversy #1942076

The phrase that always pops up in my mind when I hear a comment like this is: “Agree to disagree”.

Anyone who takes a specific stance that may be contrary to mine, I would be interested in knowing the “why” behind that stance. You have to understand their thinking behind a position, decision, stance, etc. “See it from their eyes”. And I know and believe they would do the same.

The board is there to make those tough decisions. There are going to be split decisions. We also need to remember that we represent a membership and we might need to adjust our personal opinion to serve them.

The world would be pretty dull if we all had the same opinion…

Nicolet State Trail and vicinity has a string of around 45 that’s on my radar. From around Laona Junction to Carter. Only about 20 miles. Yet being from Green Bay, you may have done it already.
