I’m a resident of Washington Island and at present there is an annual camp out event (tenth annual) June 12 on Rock Island. It’s the state park NE of Washington Island. From the mainland and from Washington Island to Rock Island there is a ferry (fee charged) service. Washington Island is a very active community especially during the summer months. Should you require any information send me an E-mail and I’ll help get you any information I can.

My reason is that this is an activity that requires far less $ investment than most others and that everyone who participates should contribute equally.

I agree with the low cost and what a great deal it is for those that use the bells and whistles. Yet in the same vein, I have a basic cell package, I don’t care for the other features, and I only use my cell for emergency (not typical). Dish T.V. is the basic package, we don’t upgrade for much we wouldn’t use. Netflix with 2 DVD’s at a time, don’t live stream, use the library a great deal. So many ways we choose to reduce costs.

The equal contribution factor is something I can understand but also find I don’t agree with totally. I find it important that people place caches, quality caches. I did a check of the caches on my favorite list and 24 out of 43 favorites were placed by non premium members. Not scientific by any means and I tend to be stingy with my points but interesting I thought. I just find it odd that PM’s get to do any cache and members only get to do the non premium.

Cindra and I may be odd, different, whatever (Heck we live on an island!) and that membership might be necessary for the success of GC.com. But if it isn’t, I look at it as the same as those “price leaders” that pull you into the store. If it’s something we use, OK, otherwise walk on by.

No offense is meant in any way, just the way are household looks at things until someone shows us our errors 🙂

I’m sure this may ruffle some feathers:

Having started out as a regular member and caching for a couple years in that mode, I looked at it as a way to enjoy an activity without having to pay what I refer to as another fee. Sure it isn’t that much but we all get nickel and dimed to death with all those extra fees we pay for everything so I looked at it as another unnecessary expense.

During that time I looked at the PM cache as a special group of caches placed by those who’s reasons I thought were as you stated, “elitist”. After meeting and talking to other cachers and becoming a premium member, I discovered that there were many valid reasons for pm designation. Many I don’t agree with. The only caches I have with pm labels are the caches up by the cottage 300 miles away. The only reason they are is my enjoyment on checking out who is looking at them. The sites pm features are something I rarely use. I became a premium member to grab the caches on my travel route back and forth. Using the pm feature as a block for some groups is something I don’t consider. If there is a problem, I contact them if possible, delete their log with a note on the site or just ignore. Personally I have found many problems with premium members.

Both groups have their “pains in the butt”. The technology is used by both groups. You place a cache and except the maintenance that goes with it. If I could see who is checking out one of my caches up north without being a premium member, they would all be non-premimum.

Who here hasn’t gotten a wonderful write up from a new regular member?

I think I might be interested in caching after the event. Can’t do it before due to ferry boat crossing not being early enough. I’ve done quite a few G.B. caches but I’m sure there would be ones I haven’t done and vise/versa.

Just as long as it doesn’t involve spelling… Make that vice versa 🙄

I am pretty sure I like those same candies. Do you want my address?

She’s sitting right across from me as we watch the Olympics. I told her and she just let out a good laugh… She likes all those really terrible tasting (to me) types of black liquorice. I didn’t think any one else likes that stuff!

Before you know it geocaching is going to be taught the old way only at the rendezvous reenactments that occur around the country.

When I teach geocaching in my classroom I follow what JimandLinda have mentioned but all the students have their Smartphones and put them to use in the field as well. So I actually go the opposite direction in addition to geocaching and also teach orienteering as well.

I seriously looked at it as a way to do a Valentines Day gift for Mrs. Northwoods but I never got it together. She’s getting her standard gifts. A card and candies she loves.

in reply to: Facebook groups versus the WGA website? #1974560

Noonan and Gotta Run summed up what I feel/felt.

Noonan, although I live in far northeast Wisconsin, I consider myself an up north cacher. New Richmond is leaning that way so I might suggest the following. Due to the mass of population being towards southern Wisconsin it’s going to be more heavily represented in the forums. There are still other cachers in the state from your area who although fewer are active and do check the forums and get together. Many don’t post real often but they do check it out. The events up north when they occur are great and many of the cachers from down south often attend. I’ve met some wonderful down south and north people at these events. Hayward Cheezehead has held many events where I have developed caching friends and made connections where we have latter cached together or just gotten together. Over in Rhinelander you’ll find events happening, Eau Claire, just watch the calendar (And I haven’t even mentioned the WGA events or those down south!).

Gotta Run identifies my feelings on my present caching style. I cache according to where I live and vacation. I go after those out of the way caches. Because it’s where I spend my vacation time and what’s available. Before I broke a 1000, I was out to grab any and all. After I hit it, I became more selective. Not a number but an experience is what I was looking for. I know that if I lived in the city with a high cache density, it would be check them all out! Because its there and easily available. Up north, it has become more of relaxed stroll rather than a sprint. Rural caching vs city caching, both fun but very different animals and which one is something you will be comfortable with, maybe even bears and ticks vs traffic and crowds of people, smart phone and cell service vs topographic map and compass.

in reply to: Favorite Points For Cache Owners #1973531

I have to agree with Mrs. Sandlander. I look at the favorite points in that way also. My number one hide has a 44% favorite ratio on a Traditional, a fun unusual hide that surprised me on its enjoyment factor but the other with a high percentage is a Multi with a 38% favorite ratio, 21 total finds.

I do have a couple with a 100% ratio yet they have only been found once 8) Thats what happens when you place caches wayyyy out of the way.

About 35%. I agree with all of the stated reasons for giving them out but I have a tendency to award them quite a while after I found the cache.

Often when I revisit a site online or in person and I’m reminded about how much I enjoyed the experience is when the favorite gets handed out. I’m pretty good at avoiding impulse buying also 🙂

Then my key holder is a small by that definition.

in reply to: Magnetic Key Holder – Micro or Small? #1973435

I have a commercially produced magnetic key holder that measures 4″X2″X5/8″. It can easily hold a log, pencil and small item. I would say that it’s closer to a small than a micro yet I would list it as a micro just as I would a matchstick container. I have also found the smaller version you most likely reference.
