FYI: I’m planning to host another free paperless training end of the month (Saturday April 29th). I’m just checking on availablity of the facility, and then I’ll submit the event cache.

I know that there is another WI event planned for this day… but this is the only
day we really have available until June. But don’t worry, I’m sure we will continue
to periodically host these as long as there is interest. We also plan on making
our handouts available on a web page as well.

you can’t really stop e-mails of your owned items (caches, TBs or coins) though you could make a filter for your e-mail that dumps them into another folder so you don’t have them clogging up your regular inbox. All your own items come with the subject:
    [LOG] Owner:
and then who made the activity, and which item
so you could further filter it out for just that coin if you wanted.

There are a couple user fields in GSAK that you could probably use, you could have a macro that sets one of those fields after you upload, then have your filters set to exclude anything with a certain value in the field.

Though I always clear my waypoints before loading them, then I know that I don’t have an archived cache in there.

note that I have started running a macro that clears out caches that I haven’t received in a gpx file in the last 60 (or 30) days to clear out disabled/archive caches as well.

After trying to show some family and friends about it, and having the first 2 of 3 we tried as DNF because they had been archive at least 6 months prior, I saw the need to keep the database cleaned up better. At least the 3rd was still active.

what is involved in the approving process? I may be interested in helping out, I’ve even found afew caches at some of our historical markers.

No foreknowledge of travel bugs and such but usually something like that is a nice surprise and not really a problem….
Long cache names that all start with the same characters (you know who you are) are truncated so they all appear the same in the list mode. When I was hunting these, I had to manually make them in shorter in the file before uploading it so I could differentiate between them in the field.

Away, I have had NO paper with me except for kleenex, not even a map for weeks and weeks and I’m really happy. I really don’t like paper all that much in the wild. It’s very hydroscopic and starts to absorb moisture immediately.

GSAK lets you do all sorts of changes to the cache name/description when you export to GPS. I’ve gone to doing %drop2 for the ID (it drops off the “GC” making it easier to alpha search)
    and then something like:
    %typ1 %con1 %diff/%terr %name %own
    for the description.
Gives you the type (Multi/Regular/puzzle) container size (Regular, Small, Micro)
    Difficulty/terrain
    Cache name
    owner

of course that is only up to the character limit of descriptions in your gpsr waypoints.

I really like the added bonus of the PDA, it does let you do the puzzles, as well as know about bonus waypoints and parking info. You can easily get a PDA for under $50 that will work just fine for caching.

ps: I’m planning to host another paperless training soon. I will post in these forums when it is planned.

    within 100 miles (unfiltered)
    2547

    filtered:
    2494

    our 120 finds:
    53 finds in that 100 miles…
    67 outside of 100 miless

Though we don’t do alot of caching, we do much of it far from home

    in reply to: I got a bug but… #1741243

Was there anything in the paper log about the bug being put there recently? It may have been that someone was travelling and hasn’t had time to log either the grab or drop.

I tend to check the last few logs anyway just to see if anyone has recently been there since I did the cache download. Never know if that person you saw leaving an area when you arrived was a fellow cacher

I didn’t even really know that one until we ran into the problem. I’m sure there is still even more about GSAK and Cachemate that I don’t know about, but I’ll let you all know about it when I do learn it

I know I had frequently seen notes that a cache was no longer available or was made available again during imports.

BTW, I did also learn of a web page that you can use with cachemate/gsak for uploading your logs to GC.com!! http://boulter.com/geocaching/express/
click Help for instructions. I haven’t tried it myself yet.

I love Delaney’s! I used to go there as a child (with a friend’s father) and was just blown away by everything there! Now I just see all sorts of great swag, and fun stuff.

    Bec

We always stopped there on our trips to Devil’s Lake with my grandfather years ago.

For those that aren’t aware of what offbeat stuff can be found there… I had seen some time ago that someone had been wanting to do a payphone TB… you can do that at Delany’s. Last time we were there they had at least 60 payphones
They have flashlights, sunglasses, glass beads and marbles, magnets, key rings… its like a swap fest.

But make a note, they do NOT accept credit cards.

Maybe you can check over some of our documents for ease of understanding and accuracy. Feel free to ask away

I believe you already have my e-mail address.

I must also agree with the others regarding meeting individuals at events.

In the past, many individuals that I knew from forums that were… hmm… obnoxious I guess is a family friendly term that can be used here were very pleasant in person. Not that they changed any behaviour back online after meeting though.

Some people use forums and such as an escape, others have their alter-ego that gets let loose online. And others are themselves online, no real difference from how they are in person.

There are sometimes even those who are much nicer online than they are in person.

I agree it would be better if everyone could be nice and polite in the community forums so as to not ‘scare’ away potential members. But I think as long as we don’t abandon the forums to less desirable postings, then potential members may see through the smoke and know that those bad posts don’t reflect the general membership.

From what I have read… it is currently in a state of transition, and they are waiting until there are more entries before they work on the searching/logging features.

unfortunately it seems that the biggest areas entered so far are the not so helpful ones… mcdonalds, etc.

in reply to: Ammo Cans #1761300

And if you are wondering where Delany’s is…

Between Baraboo and Sauk City on Hwy 12. Across from the old army munitions plant.
Dr.Evermore&Lady Eleanor cache is right next door. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=f5166b34-acf9-44b3-a70f-0f776d5d063c

$5 for either of the two common sizes, plus tons of various swag items.

    Have you setup GSAK yet?
I would be glad to help you use PQs and GSAK to help you with it.

you can filter along a route in GSAK, as well as filter by Difficulty/Terrain.

[That is one of the items on our list of tasks for paperless training materials.]

in reply to: refresh database in gsak? #1741231

One thing that I ran into with GSAK… It is very helpful to create a filter/macro to clear out caches that haven’t been updated to your database.

We were in Milwaukee area and went hunting afew caches… turns out 2 of the 3 were inactive! I didn’t have the computer with me… only gps and palm.

I created a filter/macro that clears out any active cache (I decided to leave inactive/archived ones so I know they are inactive/archive) that I have NOT found, and whose last import was over 60days (actually I did afew… 90/60/30). When it runs, it deletes those caches from the database.

I had many left in there from previous trips outside our normal home area, so many were over 90days old, if I go back to that area I will be generating new PQs anyway.

[this will be covered in any future paperless trainings we host]
