If we’re not exhausted- and if there has been nobody back in there and we have to bust trail all the way to the cache I suspect exhaustion- we would head south to Point and try a few. We’ve been out as recently as yesterday afternoon and the snow is DEEP in the woods. If you’re not exhausted and want more snowshoe caching I’ve started this bookmark. As far as what caches we would try- probably start out in the area of GC15Z18 Fern Swamp and GC1F58N Green Bean Cacherole (cuz it’s been found recently).

I’ve been looking at aerial photos of the cache trying to remember exactly how I routed back there and I noticed an interesting pine planting about half way from parking #3 to the cache. Not sure if they were attempting to create a symbol or if they were just goofing around on planting day. Mapquest or Yahoo have the best maps, look for a long diagonal of pines SW to NE, and then just south of that is a sort-of five sided figure with planted lines running through the middle. I suspect it may be the site of the old farmhouse that is mentioned by a previous cacher “I lived in an old farmhouse about half way to the cache when I was a student at UWSP in 1968-70. The homestead was removed in the early 70’s when the DNR purchased the land. There are 15 foot trees growing in the old home site.” Interesting anyway…

We will meet at parking option #3

    N 44 38.607 W 089 33.038

OPS will be there before 8:30 AM and will provide hot apple cider and hot water for coffee/ hot chocolate from 8:30- 9:00. We will leave as close to 9:00 AM as folks can get geared up for the hike (and finish their drink). πŸ˜‰

As far as folks giving you a hard time for going for this cache this time of year. Well, just tell them this is the proper time of year to visit this fragile ecosystem (how can they argue with that?). Or, invite them to break trail for us Saturday…

Okay, we need a time. Morning?

Let’s try for 9:00AM? We’re flexible on time so just throwing that out there for a start. We have a several extra pairs of snowshoes we can lend also. Two small pair (any size foot but less square inches), but would probably be fine for folks not bustin’ the way in. One homemade PVC pair my son made in scouts that nobody- including him- has ever used. Could be fun to watch someone (perhaps mathman?) try those. πŸ™„

That’s a neat trick! I think I will try that one too. Wink

Now Mathman, you’ve got your own tricks. Don’t make me post the link (It wouldn’t take much). 😯

Looks like this Saturday, January 3rd. Mrs. OPS is now planning on going (might even get the trail breakers- ahem, kids to go) and any others are welcome. With a fresh packed trail and somebody who has already found the cache going: well, this cache will never get easier than that…

    Snowshoe bookmark begins:

    Outlands Snowshoe Caches

in reply to: GWRKK series caches? #1899341

    Yes,

    Transportation

It’s a very lonely cache too- and there’s no reason for it. Easy walk through the ice shanty village this time of year.

As far as the ice goes, I’m just saying I would have no problem ice walking Skeleton Keys but wouldn’t be too comfortable ice walking GWRKK (and I’ve done both series). It all has to do with how close to dams and amount of water movement. Besides, I think it would just be much more fun to paddle it. I’m not worried about anyone “cheating” a paddle cache by walking the hard stuff. Heck, we love paddle caches and wouldn’t want to waste one. 😯

I would be very interested in that bookmark.
Sounds like it would be a fun time to get a group together and do some winter caching.

We were out on the snowshoes today and had a GREAT time. I’ll start working on a list tonight.

I can’t say for sure, but my feeling would be that there is too much current in that area of the river to trust the ice. However, having said that, I would also not be surprised to learn that there are snowmobile tracks all over the place. Myself, I would save these for a great day of paddling.

There are some great area caches to snowshoe though. In fact, with some of the other talk of bookmarks, I’m thinking of starting a snowshoe friendly bookmark of Wausau area caches.

If you want hard-water caches there is one “Transportation” that is a whole lot easier in the winter and the ice is very safe going to that one. πŸ˜‰

I received my cows yesterday too. They look great. I thought I only ordered two but I guess I ordered 5! I hope my “Better Half” doesn’t find out. πŸ˜‰

    Hmmmm,

Maybe you’d rather have four coins with the “Better Half” not knowing than five coins with her knowing… ?? 😈

My “old” Garmin 76csx which was three years old quit after extended use and I loved that unit so much that I bought a new one.

When my well-used 60CSx decided to prove to me that the warnings about installing the batteries backwards are serious- hole burned through the screen- I checked with Garmin. They have a one-rate repair fee no matter what the problem. So I sent it in and got a new one for $150 (rate depends on unit). They reserve the right to fix yours, send you a fixed replacement, or a new unit. They sent me a new unit so I was quite happy. Something to think about before buying a new one anyway…

    Wow,

Somebody spends a lot of time reading logs! I had to really dig to find these:

With the FTF race heating up in the area we knew we’d better get the shoes laced and head on out as soon as this came up.

    March 28, 2006: Cry Me a River

A rather large group in the area was having fun trading off FTF’s at the time. We happened to check the computer a short while after this came up and the kids and I had fun making a FTF run.

Supper was in process when the cache alarm went off through the house.

April 14, 2006: Mountain Bay Clubhouse Walk

In 2006 a “cache alarm” meant somebody checked the computer and a new cache had come out. The alarm was simply somebody yelling, “A new cache is out”. I can only assume you dug this up thinking we had phone alarm? Did anybody have internet enabled phones in April of 2006?

Too busy of a schedule to ever get a FTF anymore

Can’t find this. Assume it means that we don’t have the time to sit in front of the computer attempting to beat those with phone alarm to a cache.

All of that aside, I don’t understand how someone going for FTF could have any affect on how much anyone else enjoys caching.

I’m a little confused with this? The post replied to stated that a local cacher was bored with caching in our area because he/she didn’t feel there was enough competition for FTF for them (“FTF were almost a sure thing”). To me this reads as somebody not enjoying caching as a result of others going (or not going fast enough) for FTF’s? My point is this: about a year ago is when there was a big shift in the folks getting FTF’s in our area to the folks with cell alarms. So, somebody saying they’re bored with getting so many FTF’s in our area is kind of like the deer hunter saying he’s tired of winning the big buck contest at work every year as he enters the gate of the game farm to pick out this year’s deer. It’s not a lack of competition, it’s the fact that he’s operating in a different environment.

We used to enjoy running for a FTF- I think everyone in this game enjoys a FTF once in a while. It isn’t important enough for me to pay for internet enabled cell (I don’t need it for anything else). I’ve talked with several other local cachers who feel the same way. So we accept that FTF isn’t a part of the game we can take part in anymore. But, to read that folks don’t think there’s enough competition to make it fun for them after we’ve been cut out seems a little rude?

It isn’t hard to figure that if a few folks dominate the FTF’s in an area it doesn’t leave anything for other folks? New folks never get the fun of being first. Surely you can’t argue that you don’t enjoy a FTF? I think we have one local FTF in the last 9-12 months. I might be missing one or two, but if I am I can’t think of them right now (and I suspect you’ll tell me). πŸ™‚

So, if someone going for a FTF can’t have any affect on how much someone else enjoys caching…well, we challenge TBC to go 9 months allowing others to get the local FTF’s.

    πŸ˜‰

A local cacher here once made an observation that at the time I thought sounded odd to me since I have only been caching for little over 2 months. He said that he was getting a little bored of caching about a year or so ago. He indicated that there was little to no competition in the area so going after the FTFs were almost a sure thing – when there were FTFs to even be had.

They could have tried turning off their phone. More people enjoyed the game before the Pavlovian phone folks decided every cache was hidden to pad their FTF stats.

I suspect you’re already thinking what I’m thinking- color tattoo of Stacy around your neck. Then, she’ll always be there: forever looking for satellites…

or even better, have ‘er tattooed with the compass screen but leave off the arrow. Then, every week you could sharpie yourself a new direction!
