A package arrived today. Garmin sent me a custom fit double-sided tape only- not the black band. My son’s black band was fine though so I cleaned everything off and applied the new tape. Seems to be ready to go caching again. But I’m sure if you called you could get a new black band to go along with the tape.

Why they sent a hunk of double sided tape in a box big enough to ship a cowboy hat I have to wonder?

    Lj,

We’re sure going to miss having you around here. It was nice to share our campfire with you, Rick, and the Bandits the other weekend. Now that you’re off in a new PQ we can lower all our caches. 😯

Whatever you decide get the bigger MicroSD card.

And then think about donating that small card to the Scout GPSr units that Mathman mentions in another thread. I’m working with him on getting these set up and I have three of them with working cards sitting here on my desk thanks to kind and generous members of the WGA (myself included 😀 ). We were both a little surprised to find these eTrex Venture Cx units come with no internal map memory at all. We’ve set up a 20 cache GPS course for a Venture crew and they’ll be the first to get a chance to try these new units in a couple of weeks. With the snow coming down like it is right now though some of these are going to be a little more difficult to find than we intended…

But that’ll just make it more fun.

And, just to be honest- I turned a few circles years back with my Summit before I realized that when the directions said to turn slowly in a circle I didn’t need to take it personally.

I like the electronic compass feature of my 60CSx. When my son does a new “goto” at the same time as myself he’ll often start out in the wrong direction until his Legend (no electronic compass) gets its bearings and swings around- sometimes the opposite direction. This is an even bigger pain if you’re in the car and start out the wrong way. With the electronic compass my 60CSx is pointing me in the right direction without my moving at all. Perhaps if you’re not a “follow the little arrow” type this wouldn’t be a problem.

Some folks will say things like “you’ll know who has an electronic compass because they’ll be turning circles calibrating the thing”. You don’t have to turn circles- only the GPSr does. Set it in your palm, turn it two times around- you’re good to go. Mine doesn’t seem to need calibration very often either.

Divide the additional cost over the five years I expect to be using this GPSr and it was worth it to me. It may not be for you?

    Hope this helps.

I realize that this may be a little late to help. But the black rubber band around my son’s Legend started coming loose. I called yesterday and Garmin is shipping me a replacement kit at no charge. The GPSr is not under warranty anymore- as a matter of fact they didn’t even ask for a serial number or whether it was under warranty. As soon as I told them the problem they took my address and said a replacement kit is on the way. I’ll let you know how easy of a repair it is. Perhaps a simple call to Garmin could get this GPS back up and running so you could share it with more kids.

I’m going to be helping Mathman with some training sessions on these units and it would be nice to have some cards in them to demonstrate mapping. I came up with the idea of asking here because I updated the micro sd card in my 60CSx and have the original 64MB card just sitting in the desk. It can’t be worth much (if anything) with the prices coming down on the cards but it will be worth a lot to the scouts learning to use the GPSr’s. I’ll add my 64MB micro SD card. That makes two? Anybody else able to help out?

We have had both kayaks and canoes on the small lakes located in the park. It is an easy 100 ft (or so) carry from the parking lot to the lake created by the old fish hatchery dam. This is located adjacent to the main camping area (not the group camping sites).

We paddled around one evening in the fall and the water was so clear you could see right to the bottom like a glass bottom boat ride. It is a very small lake but fun to paddle around on in any case. There is also the beautiful chain of lakes (some 20 connected lakes) located within a few miles of the park. The upper chain is small boats only with a small stream that can be paddled to access the main chain of lakes. In the summer it is great fun to just walk along and pull your kayak along the stream but at the time of the campout I would suspect that may be a little cold on the feet. There are a couple of small boat access points to the upper chain very near the park. If you’d like I can try to get coords for the landings.

PS I still owe you a liquid refreshment, maybe at the 20,000 cache event bonanza.

Temporary Insanity 2007 is planning on 12,000 event temp caches. Sheesh- 20,000 would just be crazy.

But I guess it might be possible…

    Mathman’s right-

I haven’t even got around to saying congratulations on 600 yet. Well, quick, before you hit 800- congratulations on 700!

Hmmmmmmm. I wonder why One Paddle Short advised me to purchase the basic E-Trex $100 model. Hmmmmm In fact, even after I bought the Legend Cx he told me I should trade it in for a basic E-Trex model. I wonder if he is trying to tell me something!

Nope, I was trying to tell you something when I suggested you just tape some batteries to the bottom of your Boy Scout compass and try that for a couple of months…

OK, its sort of a “trick” to get Mapsource to load both sets of maps. The secret is that you have to load BOTH sets on the same load. So….

Ah, thank you very much. This works perfectly.

Perhaps we can test this out at our upcoming campout. If it involves beer, I am willing to be a test subject…

Can I log the six packs too? Cause I can really run up the numbers.

As long as you have a designated cacher along- I’d hate to see anyone end up getting a GWI…

I can see both sides of this issue. So I guess I am sitting on the fence on this one. I do have a question for One Paddle Short. At your mega event you said that their would be a “Beverage Cart” going around. My concern is will it carry any “Busch Lite” If the answer is yes, then put me down,as I an planning on attending……..

😀 You do have to admit that the image of a bunch of geocachers driving around in golf carts with a beer in one hand, a rubber stamp on a pole in the other, and GPSr on their lap is a at least a little amusing.

    At least I think it’s funny… 🙄

You’re the first one on the list. I’ll save ya a nice cart!
