You could do what we did and host (or attend) an event without temps. Many people attended our event and it was quite a nice afternoon. Or, you could attend an event with temps and just do regular caches in the area (we did that yesterday).
It would be interesting to have a second Wisconsin stats list for the folks that don’t log temps. Perhaps that would ease the concern? As our numbers rise it is kind of fun to see where we are in the Wisconsin stats. But, with folks logging such high numbers of temps at events it skews the meaning of those stats.
Or, perhaps just remove all stats links from the WGA site completely? If it really isn’t about the numbers- take the numbers away.
Congratulations from 1PS!
Congratulations from One Paddle Short!
As we began setting up for the event in the morning I was approached by Mr. Bursaw as he was looking for someone from “geocaching” to talk to. He explained that he is not against geocaching but wants to know where the caches on Rib are placed. We walked over to this car and he further explained that last year they created a new master plan for the park that included blocking out a large portion as a State Natural Area. He said that if any of the caches were inside this new area he would like them moved to outside the area. Looking at his map I believe two of the three stages will be affected. The remaining stage is inside a large gray area listed as rental. I don’t know if that will be of concern to him or not.
He asked if we could get coords for him which my son did. I have sent them to Brian so the WGA can get back to Mr. Bursaw. If you want to do the Three Bad Ribs as they have been you should do them soon. From the information I looked at, I suspect at least two of the stages will have to be relocated.
As to having the cache adopted the Wausau area has had a batch of new geocachers recently and it should be no problem to get someone to adopt it if it comes to that. One Paddle Short might even consider it.
We have never attended a WGA event but to follow up Timberline Echoes post the Rib Mountain Rendezvous ended up with 28 teams/names signing the log (paddle) and approximately 55 geocachers. We had no temps other than three that my kids put together with stuff for kids to find. People went out and did the Three Bad Ribs, or other local caches during the morning and afternoon and then all gathered for a great picnic in the evening. Quite a few stayed to camp and we gathered around the campfire to end the day.
This was a first-ever event and we had no temps. If you read the logs it would seem it was a success in getting geocachers together to meet one another.
We have had several emails from folks wanting to get together to do some caching tomorrow. We plan on trying to get the first come main shelter around 8:30-9:00 AM and spending the day on Rib (But we’ve done most all the local caches and don’t know who has planned to meet with whom to go caching).
My son is planning on leading some of his friends (cachers too) on the Three Bad Ribs around 12:30.
Anybody that doesn’t manage to connect with others that want to cache could just meet at the shelter and see who else is around. Timberline Echoes- we would be interested in trying the letterboxes with you if we’re all set up and have time.
See ya tomorrow.
I have updated the page with some more specific information. After seeing the WGA picnic I just “borrowed” the set up for this much smaller event.
Timberline Echoes- it doesn’t seem that you’re drawing a large swamp-caching contingent. I’d go with you but I’ll be so busy with getting the grills ready and stuff. I did that one in waders. 🙂
Only one DNf, which is probably a missing.
We think it’s missing too.
I know this is bad form- but some things have come up that make the 5th unworkable for us. There will be a Central Wisconsin event on Rib however, and it will be Saturday, August 26th from 4:00-7:00PM. We are planning a simple meet and greet cookout.
The cache page has been submitted and should be available shortly.
Sorry for causing red x’s on your calendars.
Congratulations Zuma!
With all the great caches you hide it’s amazing you have time to find caches too! But we’re glad for both.
Double post.
Team One Paddle Short will organize this. We are looking at Rib Mt. on Saturday, August 5th. It may be as simple as a grill and a picnic table or we may work on some type of GPSr event (this is yet to be decided). If anyone interested in attending prefers a different date let us know- we have some flexibility.
As far as a puzzle-solving event we don’t have many puzzle caches around here. The only one in Wausau is ours (and I think anyone who is willing to do the math has already found it). The nearest one I can think of is the “Political Affiliation” cache questioned in another thread. We looked at that and figured we’d save it for when we have all the other caches within 50 miles cleaned up. 🙂
Look for more information from One Paddle Short shortly. Har.
There’s another one that actually walks out to the shrine at the crash site too. Maybe on the next trip…
We circled the cornfield. Found the trail next to the fence line but there was nothing to set it apart as a public access. We chose to drive on rather than take the chance of entering private property. Still enjoyed what we did get to visit.
We’ve thought about this too. The top of Rib Mt. might make a great spot for getting together? Maybe later this summer? I don’t think we’d need temporary caches or anything- just a grill and a cooler or two…
