  • in reply to: would you cache with a stranger? #1768017

When I first started geocaching I was going to Redondo Beach, CA for a workshop. I knew I would have a problem trying to find my way around the area, much less find a geocache, so I looked at the cache pages from the area and contacted 8 people who had recently cached there. 4 got back to me, 3 took me geocaching. I had a great time and saw a lot more of the area than I would have if I had went alone. If you feel more comfortable you could see if there where an other local geocacher that would be willing to go with you – two of the people I went with brought along other geocachers (one was a guy and he brought along a couple female geocachers because he felt I would be more comfortable). I still have e-mail contact with these people and they all want to know when I am coming back. I kind of looked at it this way; people meet each other after meeting on-line for dating more and more these days – I think it would be a lot safer to meet someone for geocaching. At least the expectations would be different 😀 . I hope you have a great time on your trip!!!

After you come up with a design you should post on the geocoin discussion page on the national forums. Some people there even pre-sell their coins before they are made. Check with the geocoin manufacturers also and see what they can do for you. There is a bookmarked list of them on the geocoin page on the national forums.

Ahhh…. 😀 . A tip of our bunny ears to The Leading Light of Western Wisconsin Geocaching.

Now wait a minute here. I thought ROBIN was The Leading Light of Western Wisconsin Geocaching. Isn’t Zuma’s title “Sidekick and Occasional Chauffeur of The Leading Light of Western Wisconsin Geocaching?” 😀

Yeah, that is right, ROBIN is the leading light of Western Wisconsin Geocaching. And she does let me drive sometimes….But I do get real nice hootie rewards sometimes, if I can get the find.

Now, I think he has that a little backwards. He almost always gets to drive and basicly has drug me along (sometimes literally), but I have always enjoy it (well, almost always)! I do occasionally take a little geocaching side trip on my own. Congratulation on 3000, but no coin for this milestone – you will have to settle for a belated “hootie reward” 😆 ….

You can all look forward to a little more positive publicity about geocachers, coming soon in the Eau Claire area. I am planning a CITO event in the spring (April?). I will post more detail here as the plan comes together!

Zuma has one. You can get a coin by finding a coin certificate in one of the 50 HBZ caches. There are only a few coins left!

Congratulations on reaching this milestone! Glad to share the trails (or river) with you on some of these finds! Good luck in achieving your next goal!

in reply to: WGA Picnic — Not just for caching? #1764931

Why would the caches have to be temps? I know that when I went to the camp out and the picnic most of the caches could have been regular caches. Of course you couldn’t do 30 -50 regular caches, but you could plan an event in a certain area and have the local cachers help put out some new regular caches that would first be available at the event before going online. Perhaps cachers interested in helping out with an event in their area could contact the WGA. When doing the Sawdust City Days Geocaching Style event with Star Beam and Jim Beam I placed 7 caches in the park where we where having the event. Most people visited ate and went out in groups (which included some new cachers that didn’t have a GPSr yet) and found some or all of the caches in the park. During check in maybe you could also upload coordinates for other permanent caches in the area for those whose cache fix isn’t satified by the new caches place. I didn’t find even half of the caches at the picnic and only plan on logging the permanent caches that I found. Did I still have fun? Yes, I had a great time! It was fun to visit with cachers I have met before and to meet new ones. It was also interesting and I think important to be able to sit in on the WGA meeting. Local cachers placing caches for a WGA event would decrease the workload for the event planners, perhaps get more people interested in participating in the events personally, would ensure that the events get done in different areas – basically you could only use a park once if the caches stayed in place, more great caches would be placed (If you where placing a cache for a WGA event wouldn’t you want it to be great?) and there would be no “cache pick up” at the end of the event. Also the caches would be available to be found later if you couldn’t make it to the event. Lastly the controversy about logging temporary caches would be eliminated. If there where any temporary caches perhaps they could be fun ones for the kids, or perhaps some for adults that would be a part of some kind of game or challenge. I think it would be great if it could be a social event with some caches available to be found.

in reply to: How did you find out about geocaching? #1764698

Last November I met a fellow nurse named Ralph. We started sending each other e-mails a couple of times a week, talking about what was going on in our lives and several times he mentioned geocaching. He commented how his dog loved geocaching and how relaxing it was. I had no idea what it was, I thought maybe it was something like frisbee golf 😳 ………. Well a dog would like that too! One evening being a little bored I did an internet search on geocaching and read all about it. Shortly after that I was talking to Ralph on the phone and after our conversation I decided that he just wasn’t going to be good dating material. He was older and excited about having more freedom now that his kids where grown. Well my youngest had just turned 4 at that time, my calendar was full and having more freedom was going to be a long time coming for me. So I sent Ralph an e-mail saying that I didn’t think it would work out for us to date, but geocaching sounded interesting and it would be great if he would take me out and show me what that was all about. I actually couldn’t wait and bought my own GPSr on “black friday” – 6am the morning after Thanksgiving at Gander Mountain (before I went to work). I found my first geocache the next day. A week later Ralph (Zuma) and I did go out geocaching. 9 months, over 500 finds and 52 hides later I still go geocaching with him and decided that he is fine dating material after all! I guess if I really didn’t want to go out with him I shouldn’t have made the directions to my house a multi-cache !

I would be glad to help pick up caches.

in reply to: Geocoin thieves! #1763528

I have 12 coins out in circulation. I just checked and as far as I can tell so far none of them have gone missing. It’s kind of cool to see that I have one in England and one in Alaska. I hope that if more coins are out in the wild they will lose a little of their novelty and be less likely to be stolen. One thing that I did to hopefully help them remain in circulation was to print a “cover” for the coin holder to inform people that the coin was to be placed in an other cache. I think that some coins are just taken in error by someone who doesn’t know that they are not just regular swag. It’s undeniable that some coins are purposely stolen; it’s sad to say that geocaching is not immune to unscrupulous people. I think, as a whole, there are by far more good people (who happen to geocache) than bad. So I will continue to place coins in the wild, for the benefit of all the good geocachers that I know – or know only by a log.

in reply to: The HBZ geocoins have arrived!!!!! #1763417

I guess this won’t qualify for an “event” unless I change the date, but all are still welcome to attend!

in reply to: The HBZ geocoins have arrived!!!!! #1763416

Belated congratulations on your new arrival! The video was wonderful, it almost made my cry. Makes me want an other little one of my own 😆 ! How soon you forget about all of those sleepless nights and diaper changes! Hope all is going great for you at home and you are enjoying your new addition. – Robin

in reply to: Cache Hiding #1763368

I think I have something going on that day, but for the life of me I can’t remember what! If I find that I have the day free I would love to help hide some caches. Are the containers provided and do we need to bring swag?

Congratulations! It makes me wonder how you had time to complete at many of the HBZ series caches as well! I hope to follow in your footsteps, but haven’t had time to even make a dent in them.
