1)Heard about geocaching from my boss, CacheCows.
2)Use the GPSr for no other REAL uses — playing in the car to see where we are, etc. Have used it a couple times to find a place (it’s a mapping unit)
3)If it’s much below 20 I probably would not be too thrilled to go out. I’d find something inside to do.

Yup! Looks like you fixed it. My stats stayed and I’m on the list this time. Thanks!!!

I tried to sign in and update my info. No luck. When I go to the page, it does say my name at the top. So I’m guessing that my sign-in works fine. But I have updated my finds by type and the number of hides, but nothing shows. I don’t see my name in the list after saving those #’s. Then when I go back into the edit area, everything is 0 again. Help!

in reply to: How to get permission to place a cache? #1745700

For my most recent cache, “The Trail’s Gone Cold”, I checked with ‘The Man’. That cache is in the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine so I started with a search on the ‘net. I looked for, and found, a page about the Kettle Moraine forest that had the names of the supervisors. I then e-mailed the supervisor of that particular unit. I sent him a link to geocaching.com, a brief description of what geocaching is, the description of what I was planning to hide and where. I got no replies for a few days. So then I called him. I explained who I was and that I had e-mailed. He seemed to remember my e-mail but gave no reason for not answering. I again explained what I was doing and where I was thinking of placing a cache. He pointed out that I could not place it in the area across the road as that is a state Natural Area; but that my other choice should be fine. I thanked him and went ahead with the cache. I also stated in the cache write-up that I had the permission of the supervisor of that unit and to please treat the area kindly. I think if you work with the correct authorities, in the correct WAY, you’re much better off in the long run — as is geocaching in general.

in reply to: Where to Eat #1745668

I think the Parthenon might be the other one on State St. If I remember right, there are two Greek places within a block of each other on opposite sides of the street. One warning: If you eat the ‘Spanikopita’ (sp?) watch for spinach stuck in your teeth. Mrs. Outtahand really looked ‘special’ after that meal! Also along State St. is a bar called “The Pub”. They have a section of seating that is right against the window. If you’re fortunate enough to grab one of those seats, you get quite a show of the people who walk around on State St. while you enjoy a beverage of your choice.

My “What the Honest Man Sees” virtual cache (waypoint=GC8406) is very near State St. in Madison. There are many good eatin’ places there. One of my favorites is a Greek restaurant that is just a few blocks from my cache. I believe it’s name is “Zorba’s”. It’s very good and reasonably priced.

I used my GPSr on a recent flight on (I believe) Northwest. Before going, I checked there web page. They had listed exactly what devices were allowed to be used, and at what times (in the gate, during level flight, never, etc.). The GPS was specifically listed as being allowed while parked at the gate, and while in level flight, but not during ascent or descent. I printed that page and took it with me on the plane. I did not specifically ask the flight attendant (probably should have) but had the printout with me just in case. It was really cool seeing that kind of speed (REAL in this case) and altitude on my GPSr and seeing what major cities I was flying over. Cool to see the track log once I got home, too.

in reply to: Mom and Her Satellites #1745614

By the time we got to the Mothership at the campout, we were beat. We chose to find just one of the satellites — mostly because we couldn’t WALK any more! Perhaps another alternative solution might be to promote a couple teams teaming up to find a satellite that they both need. CacheCows is exactly right in the law of diminishing returns. If I am down to needing just ONE LAST satellite, the chances of that ONE baton being available get pretty slim. If I am encouraged to team up with another team, my chances increase. This, too, promotes socializing. Working together with another team right from the point of entering coords even lets us see another cacher’s style of hunting. How do they use their GPSr? Do they use a compass? etc. I realize this goes against the premise of reducing the number of people at each satellite at one time, but it does help the overall issue of finding all of the caches.

in reply to: How many caches? #1745601

The most I’ve done in a day was seven with my dad (Tuck-A-Way) in Sheboygan. We started the morning around 8am and did four of the caches at a leisurely pce. Around noon, we picked up my wife and my mom and broke for lunch out. After lunch, they joined us for the last three of the day — again, at a very leisurely pace. That was plenty for us. I guess I’m in agreement with someone above. I don’t have the desire to knock off more than maybe ten. Beyond that, I’m getting way too tired to really enjoy it.

    How about:
N44 W087 or whatever is closer to your home. Then there’s always the option of putting the name of your GPSr on it: RINO120, etc.

    Or how about: 1ST FNDR
And (just for ME): OUTAHND (I actually had this one!)

    Just thought of another:
    GC2FC7 Happy Medium

Be sure to read all the logs on this one. I think the posted coordinates may be off. Be sure to read the logs and get the correct ones. This is RIGHT next to the highway at a geographical marker.

There are several up that way that are not too far off of 141. We have a cabin up there and last Memorial Day weekend we did many up that way. Here are some with the waypoint ID so you can search on that:
GC5D59 Tucked-A-Way (this one is mine)
    GCG2VK Cedarville Tower (my dad’s)
    GC2E9A Letterman Tripped
    GCAAA3 Piers Gorge
    GC5F1A Waterfall Adventure
Each of the last 3 are in county parks that have beautiful waterfalls to look at (if you have time).

The following page explaines it all. And it’s much easier than re-typing it all here:
