…Died-In-the-Wool-Been-There-Done-That-Seen-It-All Cachers
( DITWBTDTSIAC’s for short)I’m fairly sure upland birds will be opening soon, too. Grouse, chukkar, pheasant, etc.
Not too much to worry about with those, though. The hunters need to be pretty much on top of those to shoot them. And shot doesn’t travel too far in the woods so being hit accidentally isn’t TOO much of a problem.
before my medical problem that left me legally blind, I did have a CDL. Sadly, I’m afraid I can’t accomodate any more.
On the other hand, because I don’t drive, we’re down to one vehicle in the house and a lot less miles being driven. The overall gas bill has probably gone down despite the higher prices.
How will it affect my caching? Probably not a lot. We don’t go out that often anyway. So when we do get time to do one, it’s usually a single and not TOO far away.
I’ve already hit my (admittedly simple) goal of getting 225 by year’s end. Only other goal I really have is to get at least one per calendar month. That shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Seems like a great way to handle locationless caches. But virtuals??? I don’t agree with that aspect.
A side note(question): Are these going to add to find totals? If so, I could probably go out this afternoon and get a half dozen in a heartbeat. That doesn’t seem quite right.
I guess it’s a step in the right direction as far as a good way to handle locationless. But that’s about it.OK — if you’re not complaining from personal experience, I will..
It is understood by most that a terrain rating of 1-star is supposed to be wheelchair accessible.
So to me, that means a 1.5-star terrain is, maybe, accessible by someone on crutches. At least, that’s my thinking. So here we are, I’m just recovering from a mild illness that kept me in bed for a few days. The weekend comes, it’s gorgeous weather, and I’m antsy.
I pick a couple of caches that are 1.5 terrain because I’m still not feeling great.
We get to the first. The GPS takes me to the edge of a rather steep, grassy drop-off. The kind you don’t go down without grabbing nearby branches. And the GPS says it’s about 10′ down that.
Well this is a 1.5 terrain! It can’t be down there! So we search the edge of it.
Nope
After plenty of searching and not finding, gave up.I e-mailed the owner honestly thinking it may have been gone. Later got a response that my GPS was right. It was down there.
Sorry —- NOT a 1.5 terrain!
I’m surprised nobody’s mentioned this hint yet—-
“parking is at 12 34.567 / W001 23.456”
or
“this cache is already too easy”
Well FREE is terrific!!!
If you still wanted to do a little fund-raising, I’ll bet the Parks Dept. would happily accept! Think of the goodwill produced in that!
WI-Geocaching might accept a free-will offering as well. I don’t know.
Forgot to add this:
The nearest internet service provider was AOL with a Milwaukee dial-up number. That was long distance for me.
At that time, AOL was charging about $49/month for a limited number of minutes.
So between the $49/month to AOL and my long distance phone charges, I was paying about $100 – $150 per month to use the internet!
I see a few options here:
1) paying a $2 – $5 fee for my wife & I to attend is no big deal. You could put out a donations bucket with a sign saying something to the effect of “Each team is expected to donate $x for enjoying today’s activities”. Put the bucket in a prominant place and announce it often.
2) Perhaps you could have some T-shirts done up. Mark them up by $7 – $10 each and use that profit. Take pre-orders and payment by Paypal so buyers can pick them up at the event. Have a few extras at the event for those that didn’t pre-order.
3) Make some pre-made micro-caches and sell them. A film canister with camo tape, a very small note sheet, and cut off golf-type pencil would cost next-to-nothing to prepare but might be sold for a couple bucks each.
4) Get a few nice things to raffle off: Wisonsin State Park stickers, ammo cans, AA batteries, etc. Charge $1 a ticket.
I don’t remember those
But I do remember having Windows 3.1
Having one program installed that would dial and connect.
Then opening another program to get to web sites (believe it was Netscape)
Didn’t have any e-mail. Or anyone to e-mail back and forth with for that matter!
I remember paying over $100 for a 14.4 modem because it was FAST!!!
I remember newsgroups being the most interesting thing out there because web sites just had not become popular.
I remember places that did have sites saying them as “http://www…..” because back then you had to type in the http:// in front of the www. If someone had just said “blahblah.com” the average person never would have known what they were talking about. This has been a very well-behaved, very informative, and rather long (10 days near the top of the boards) discussion.
But I’m curious — after hearing all of us comment one way or the other on this subject, which way are the board memebers currently leaning. Do the board members feel they have a real honest idea of how the majority of WI cachers feel on this subject? Do they have any questions they would like answered before the vote?
I think it’s not just time to hear from some more WI cachers, but also hear from the board members to see if they have any concerns that we, the populous of cachers, could respond to.
OK — my conscience is now clear. Mrs.OuttaHand and I finally got caching again yesterday. We’ve dropped off a white jeep in “Its’ All In The View”

edit: added the link (I think)
