  • in reply to: Too many business cards in caches? #1759332

I, too, have a Trudy & the Beast magnet card in my case of caching trades. I think it’s pretty neat.

As far as regular business cards go, I don’t think they are any real problem. But I do think it would be nice if they were organized in some way. Normally I see them floating around the cache, making their way to the bottom of the box, getting all grubby and damp. If they were rubber-banded, or paper-clipped and kept in the ziplock with the log book, that would certainly be much nicer. That’s just my $.02

There it is. That’s the real key, I think.

Geocaching started with a guy, a 5-gallon bucket, and some posted coordinates. If the purists REALLY want to keep it pure, where are the 5-gallon buckets? Why are there Travel Bugs? Why are there Event Caches? Why are there Micro’s? Why was a “Small” size created?
None of these things were there in the beginning of geocaching.
But a need for them was seen, and they were created. Well, guess what Jeremy — maybe there’s a NEED to evolve this whole Event cache situation as well ! If we’re going to define geocaches as we have, then the temporary finds hidden at event caches DO qualify. Therefore, there needs to be a way to log EACH ONE of them and receive credit for finding them.
It’s not (necessarily) that we NEED those finds to make an event successful. But if you can draw more people to them by making the caches log-able, then that seems to be a plus. Heck, a store with good products should not need to have a sale. But they know that they need something more to draw in people. There is so much competition for a person’s time these days that there needs to be a reason to do something. To me, part of the reason of going to an event cache is to get more finds. No — it’s not the WHOLE reason. But it is definitely a part.

    [hanging head in shame]

    I have one

Picked it up a month or two ago and just haven’t been out caching much. Been working on tile floor in my house.

I hope to get out in the next couple of weeks and get it back into circulation.

    sorry

To me, this is an incredibly easy one:

    It is a “log-able” cache if…

    1) it requires a GPSr to find it

    2) there is a way to prove you were there (either by signing a log book, e-mailing a virification answer to the hider as in virts, or by stamping your logbook with a stamp that was in the cache.)

That’s it. Just those two things. It doesn’t matter if it’s in the middle of a woods all by itself, if it’s under a park bench in Central Park, taped to a stoplight, in a Walmart parking lot, or a temp hide at an event. If it meets those TWO criteria, it is a log-able cache and should be allowed.

Now — if GC.com doesn’t want to allow multiple “Found It’s” and we have to use multiple “Attended”‘s then OK. So be it. That’s just a matter of symantics. I don’t care what you want to call it as long as I get “credit” for “finding” that cache.

I know — there are a lot of quotes up there. That’s only because this whole “game” has gotten stuck on defining everything. If I don’t use quotes, one of my definitions will surely be “wrong”. .

OK — you ask, “what will you do if they stop allowing credit for multiple “finds” at an event?”
Well, frankly, I probably WOULD be less inclined to go. Yes the comraderie (sp?) is great! Putting a face to an online “handle” is fun! Seeing a new park in detail is terrific! But I COULD spend that same amount of time doing “log-able” caches elsewhere just as easily!

    There’s my $.02 Well — it’s my $.04 but it’s on sale tonight.

** Have them contact local scout leaders

** Have them sign up with their own team name and hide interesting caches

** Have them advertise locally for a free geocaching class/outing

in reply to: Show your favorite caching pictures- #1759283

I have 3 favorites (so far):
This one was taken near a cache near Darien:

This one is a virtual near Spring Green, WI:

And this was at “Caching Thru the Snow” event:

    ummm…

    oh nevermind.

    in reply to: Addicted? #1749963

If you suspect you are a cacheaholic, you probably are.

    * Do you “notice” excellent places for caches as you’re driving down the road?

    * Do you check what caches are near your destination when planning a trip (even for a short trip to a different city)?

    * Have you made, or are you planning to make, personalized trade items?

    * Have you, or are you planning to, upgrade your GPSr? (even though this one probably works fine)

    * When you go shopping, do you unconciously look for good trade items?

If the answer to ANY of these is ‘yes’ you’re addicted. And, given that you posted the question here, I think we all know the answer, now don’t we?

in reply to: Jeep Wrangler Travel Bugs #1738124

This thread kinda died out when the distribution of the bugs was still in planning.
Now that they’re out there, how did everyone do? Did you find one? Where?
We found one in a cache in Sheboygan this past Saturday. Was pretty surprised to see it! It’s a nice little unit!
Next two steps are: 1)find a good cache to put this in; and 2)find a store that sells them so I can have one for myself!!!

in reply to: How many SHOULD one hide? #1749756

another POSSIBILITY is that the person HAS found lots of caches; but just hasn’t logged them online. Some people search them just for fun and not the numbers. So this hider MAY actually have found hundreds.
Given what you wrote that many of them are garbage, then maybe they really DO only have a few finds. If that’s the case, then they probably should have found several more before deciding to hide one.
All-in-all, they are, at least, providing some caches for people to find. They may not be the BEST, but they are there. Compare it to movies: Not everything that comes out of Hollywood is a timeless classic. But at least they’re trying.

in reply to: How long for EarthCache approval? #1749741

hey — cool ! I just got an e-mail saying it’s been approved!

in reply to: How long for EarthCache approval? #1749740

Good news! There was no notification that it had been OK’d until I got the first e-mail from the first finder!

So it is now approved and is fine. So the earthcache.org people DID send it on to GC.com and it was approved as an earthcache.

If you’re a member, you can do a pocket query on earthcaches. Or just check your local listings and look for a cache type icon that looks like the earth with a chunk missing.

uh – huh. I REALLY should read ALL the posts before following up. As was mentioned by the last couple posters — it is approved. Oh well. I guess I just like being redundant.

With my Rino I normally see 6 – 7 or so. But recently I did see 10.

in reply to: WZBT03’s States & Countries Stats #1759151

    We had 4 previously:
    “Outtahand – 4 (WI,MI,FL,IA)”

    Now adding NY
we did our 200th there about a week ago or so.

(Hopefully, will be adding KS to the list this coming weekend but can’t say for sure right now.

We’ll be that far north, but not that far west. Our place is up near Amberg, WI ; Wausaukee, WI, etc. — about 50 miles straight north from Green Bay. Lots of woods and not lots of people. That’s a pretty good combo for a hustle-bustle holiday like Memorial Day.
