    Yup — it’s fun.
Unless you’re the last one looking while all the resta re at the tree!?!

Similar experience: We did a virtual up near Spring Green that was an old blacksmith’s shop. We got to the location and looked around — nothing but barns.
The farm owners happened to be out so we chatted a bit. Turned out they had donated the old building and all its contents to the local historical society. The building had been moved a week earlier!
I notified the cache owner that it needed to be archived.

I’ve seen that option. But I, like EnergySaver, want to write up a bit more about the cache search experience. As a cache owner myself, I know that those are the only real reward that the cache owner gets. It’s no fun just seeing “found it”.

I can bring my cord for the Rino and let you use it for the day there in case other Rino-ites need to use it. I’ll want to take it with me when I leave for the day, though.

I believe it was mentioned that there will be temporary caches placed. Will you have a laptop to upload those to our GPSr’s? If so, do you have the cord for the Rino (the smaller plug)?

That I did do. They have their own GPSr — a Garmin Foretrex. I helped them get the cache coords loaded into it and showed them how to “Go To”. I followed along behind with my GPSr in my hands. Once they got moving and following the arrow, they walked right to it. So they did have the fun of “following the arrow” to the cache site, at least.

They do love to hike in the Kettle Moraine anyway. So my first thought was to take them to the Nordic Trails. There are 3 caches in there. The one closest to parking is mine so I knew I could start them off with a find.
But yesterday was rainy and lousy. So we didn’t think it’d be a lot of fun going back in there on what would end up being about a 3 mile hike round trip to do all three.
In the end, I chose to take them to a new one with a fairly easy rating but a “small” cache size (called “Girls Stuff”). Well that one ended up being TOO easy — it was laying on the ground and visible from 20′ away. We then hit another one that was brand new and ran into cachers there at the site so it was real easy, too!
I did warn them that caching is not always this easy. And they are very excited about getting out to do some more real soon.
I had just wondered how other introduced friends/family to this craziness. Thanks for all the responses.

in reply to: Firefox? Thunderbird for email? #1748424

I, too, switched to Firefox & Thunderbird at home and both are working great. I download .gpx files to my desktop and open them from there. Have had no problems with either program.
Thunderbird’s built-in spam filtering seems to work pretty well after a couple weeks of “teaching” it.
If you install Firefox, be darned sure that you download & install the corrrect java for that browser or you may have problems with web pages that have java.

When I placed “The Trail’s Gone Cold”, I worked with
    Paul Sandgren
    S91 W39091 Hwy 59
    Eagle, WI 53119
    (262) 594-6200
He is the Forest Superintendent of the Kettle Moraine – Southern Unit
his e-mail is SandgP (at) dnr.state.wi.us
was a tad slow to reply to e-mail, but was pleasant and easy to work with on th ephone.
(edit: re-formatted his e-mail addy so he won’t get spammed a ton)

    John —
Would love to help you get a start. I even have an extra GPS you could use when (if) we get together. Only problem is that we are about 100 miles apart. BUT…..
My folks live in Sheboygan. And my dad is another cacher. We usually get together on Father’s Day weekend to go caching around the Sheboygan area. So if you’re still interested come June, please go to my user profile in geocaching.com and e-mail me. Perhaps we can get together and get you rolling.

That is really slick! I updated my caches as soon as I read this. I really hope others will as well. If the proper items are chosen, that really gives a wealth of info that is very useful to a cache hunter!

TOO FUNNY!!! This is a picture that I took of our dog, Maxx. We were at a cache (obviously) that is named “I Wish I Had a Dog”. Snapped the pic real quickly as the dope crawled into the hole.
I e-mailed the cache owners for permission to upload it as it is quite a spoiler, and they agreed it was too funny not to post.

As far as a caption goes, hmmmmmm. Perhaps something like, “Where’s my brain? Where’s my brain? Is it in here????”
(Maxx often demonstrates that he’s not the brightest bulb in the string.

Glad to report I can contribute one to the 150 you predicted in #7. I hit #100 in March.

I, too, am curious to see what kind of predictions will come forth for the upcoming 2005 !

in reply to: Bears in your caching area? #1748258

My folks (geocacher named Tuck-A-Way) have a cabin up north near Pembine/Wausaukee. They have a family of bears near them. Have pictures of them just outside the picture window of the trailer. They’ve also lost a couple bird feeders to the things.
We’ve done lots of caches up in that area so we’ve been in their stomping grounds.
Have never come across them while caching, though. Don’t think I’m real eager to, either.
