    Add one new state for me, please—-

    Iowa
    Did two caches there this past weekend.
    Very similar in hide style to here in WI

    whoa!!! Flashbacks to junior high and the filmstrips!!!

    Lucky I hit “reply” and not “post a new thread”!!!

    Now you’ve got me thinking of changing my userID to “Billy the Poster”

    in reply to: meeting cachers on the trail #1747489

    We ran into some cachers this past weekend on the trail. When I reached to put my hand on his shoulder, he decked me! He didn’t know the official dance!

    OK — maybe that didn’t REALLY happen.

    But we did run into some other cachers this weekend. We had just found Qwerty’s Reunion and I was sitting on a log signing the log book when Mrs. OuttaHand says “there’s some people coming”. What am I to do? I’m sitting on a log about 5′ off the trail with a rubbermaid container, papers, and baggies everywhere! So I continue signing while coming up with a big fat lie.
    Then Mrs. OuttaHand says “I think they’re doing this too! They’ve stopped on the trail and they’re talking to each other.”
    A minute later they approached and said “I think we’re doing the same thing.” We agreed and started to chat. They got a free and easy find out of the deal since I was sitting there with it. So I told them exactly where it had been hidden and how; and we took off.

    Oh — the reason they didn’t know about the dance is because they’re from Tucson, AZ!
    And I’d be able to tell you their names if we’d both had the business cards mentioned above. I think that’s a pretty neat idea, too.

    My geocaching “pack” is considerably smaller than many peoples’. It’s a small belt-attached one which contains:
    * Rino120 GPSr
    * Digital camera
    * 7 extra AA batteries (complete extra set for both the camera & Rino)
    * Notebook & pen (mine)
    * plastic trash bag
    * extra memory cards for camera
    * several of my signature compass/carabiner keychains for trades

    I also carry a seperate insulated water bottle that has a shoulder strap. It usually has gatorade in it.

    You don’t see bug spray there because we leave it in the car. Just spray up before entering woods.

    ok — it’s official. There have been two Jeep Travel Bugs released in the Amberg-Wausaukee area of northern Wisconsin.

    Go Get ’em!!!

    Cache ID’s: GC5D59 & GCG2VK

    By the way — when I looked at the “Nearest Caches” list for this area, one of those caches showed the Jeep travel bug icon, the other only showed a regular travel bug icon. There IS a regular bug in there also. So does that icon over-ride the Jeep one?

    we did four caches in the Burlington area today. I had all best intentions of leaving at least one bug out there! However.
    At two of the caches, we got so busy swatting mosquitoes and signing the log book, I completely forgot about it. I had one in my back pocket ready to place! In each case we were back to the car and about 5 miles down the road when I realized I could have dropped it there.
    On the other two occasions, where I really did remember(!), the caches were too full/small. One was a micro, and the other was jammed with stuff.
    So I’m going to send one up north with my dad (Tuck-A-Way) to put into my cache up there. He’s already take posession of it, so that really will happen.
    The other one, I really hope to be able to get into a cache nearby sometime in the next couple weeks.

    7/5/04–edit– BOTH travel bugs went north. I’m just afraid I won’t be able to get out caching any time real soon. Thought it was best to at least get them moving. They will be up north in two caches my dad and I have up there near Amberg, WI. Will be dropped off later this week.

    I admit to having two right now. Just picked up the second one while caching out of town. We were not able to do a second cache while there so it came back to me.
    I’m planning to go out caching with my dad this coming weekend and should be able to drop both of them.
    Someone above had part of it right. I wanted to get them home and take some pics to enter in the contest. Kind of sat on it hoping for divine inspiration of some kind to get that one ‘perfect’ picture. I’ve taken a couple pictures now and have had no real ‘divine inspiration’ so I guess it’s time to move them along.
    So if anyone’s looking to get one, check the caches around Burlington after the weekend. I think that’s where we’re going.

    You can add my (meager) stats:

    3 states:
    WI
    MI
    FL

    I live just 15 miles from the IL border and haven’t done any in that state yet!! Have to get on that!

    in reply to: Caching Frequency #1747023

    We’re mostly weekenders, along with holidays that might fall on Mondays, etc.

    The only notable exceptions are when we’re on vacation for a week or so; or when we have a chance to be FTF on a cache that appears mid-week (did that once).

    I’d love to get out more, but Mrs. OuttaHand doesn’t usually get home much before 6pm or later and we’re both too beat to go out and thrash through a woods by that point.

    Sorry for the delay, but I’ve got a few more pics headed your way.

    in reply to: What did you do before geocaching? #1747178

    My other favorite pass-time is “Sporting Clays”. Many people have heard of shooting skeet or shooting trap with a shotgun. Well, sporting clays is also a shotgun sport but it’s a bit more involved. A clays course is laid out kinda like a golf course. You walk to different “stations”. You stand at a specific place in a sort of stantion so that you can only swing your shotgun thru a limited arc. When you shout “Pull” one or two round clays will be thrown out by a machine. You, of course, try to shoot them and break them.
    Each station will present you with a different look at the “birds”. They may be going away from you, coming toward you, going side-to-side, straight up, bouncing along the ground, etc.
    On a course where you are presented with 50 clays to shoot, therefore a perfect score being 50, I will usually shoot around 20. I am ecstatic to break 30. I’m satisfied if it’s above 15. The absolute best I’ve ever seen on our home course was someone getting 40. That was pretty much unheard of. So that gives you an idea of how difficult it is. And, of course, it’s just like golf courses…. some clays courses are set up to be much more difficult than others.

    Only reason I don’t do more of this any more is that my main shooting partner, the guy who got me into sporting clays, moved way up north and we just can’t get together any more to shoot. So my shotgun has been parked for quite a while.

    in reply to: Step up on Tony’s Soap box. #1746804

    I’ll toss in my 2pennies’ worth here.

    I will be the first to admit that my first hide was one of the “Look-I-own-a-cache!” variety. It’s on the side of the road at our cabin up north. Whoopeee!
    Since then, I believe my other caches have brought people to a couple places that they would not otherwise have been aware of. Very interesting places, at that.
    I don’t understand those that, perhaps after ONE “Look-I-own-a-cache”-type hide, insist upon placing more of them. I would think that after having found 10 – 20 caches, one would get the idea of what makes the difference between a ‘good’ hide and a ‘bad’ one.
    I, too, am afraid that soon we will be looking at a micro in every Walmart parking lot. I don’t like the sound of that, but it seems to be on the horizon. And I don’t see why that has to be!
    We are blessed with a state that is rich in terrific, scenic places! Look around you! Down here where I live, we have an incredibly scenic area called the Kettle Moraine. Now it is true that there are already many fine caches in there. But, given the 1/10 mile rule, there would seem to be PLENTY of fine areas yet to explore. Areas that would provide not only a very scenic hike, but locations a-plenty for a terrific HIDE.
    I know — I’m getting dangerously close to the other similar thread. But even if someone were to place a cache just 200′ into the hike of one of the areas’ nice trails (thereby not introducing the ‘hike’ factor) it would still be possible to place a nicely hidden cache. Something with a little originality in the choice of container; Something with a unique theme; perhaps a tricky night-only cache, etc. etc.
    What it all comes down to is simple: If everyone (who wants to) hides something that provides something more than adding one to your find count, this can remain a very interesting state in which to cache!

    in reply to: Rino Owners: Did you see ME? #1754717

    1) Glad to hear I showed up on your other Rinos. I guess I must have mine configured correctly, then.

    2) I thought the same thing when I heard the announcement about the lost Rino. I thought that of all types of GPSR’s to lose, this would surely be the easiest to find!
    I never did hear the resolution, though. Do we know if it was found? The one big “fly in the ointment” of it being a Rino would be the loose battery problem. If it fell out of a pocket or off of it’s clip and hit the ground, the “loose battery” problem may rear its ugly head and shut the unit down! Then the search would be just the same as any other GPSr.

    in reply to: Rino Owners: Did you see ME? #1754714

    This is the first time I’ve had a contact on the Rino. So no — I don’t know if it’s possible to delete the waypoints without deleting the contact.

    It’s definitely something to look into, though!

    in reply to: The Hike or the Hide? #1747039

    Location! All the way!

    The ultimate geocache for us would be .5 to f1.0 mile each way on a nice, scenic Wisconsin wooded trail in to a cache that is located under the ever-popular parallel stack of sticks. That way, we have enough energy to read the logs in the cache’s log book, look around, take some pictures of the surroundings, and just enjoy ourselves.
    So it’s all about the scenery and the surroundings. That’s also why I don’t mind doing a decent virtual cache. If it’s a worthwhile virt that brings me to an impressive place, I’m happy.
