  • The only Geocaching FB group I follow is Team Northwoods as they are in my area.  I think FB has destroyed many internet communities.  I would rather come to one place to get my information.

    I work that day until 6:30 and hope to work something out so I can attend.

    I use an email address exclusively for geocaching that I do not check on a regular basis although a copy of the message also goes to my primary email that I check on all my devices.

    They were links to images rather than pages so that may have had something to do with it. There were text that went along with them when I originally posted also.

    In addition to the time being GMT the date format is 23/11/2014 instead of 11/23/2014 in the event box on the index page. Those can be changed at wp-admin/options-general.php

    The site is also not centered within my browser window.

    ^There are a couple links to examples above but they are not coming up.

    Not trying to nitpick anything just letting you know my observations.

    I don’t want to be one of those that complains about changes but I liked the other forums better. Much easier to navigate and see where the new and updated threads are. I like less clicks to accomplish the same thing.

    I do like the look of the site better.

    One of the wordpress sites I have on my server brought the whole thing to a stop because of a xmlrpc.php attack. It was creating server loads that were very high in turn that was causing services to fail. Putting the following in the .htaccess file was the solution.

    <Files "xmlrpc.php">
    Deny from all
    ErrorDocument 403 "Denied"
    </Files>

    in reply to: Smart phones, data plans #1971845

    I use my phone 95% of the time. I have a Galaxy S3 and found it to be very accurate whether in the open or under cover.

    I use c:geo and will download a pocket query of the 1000 closest caches and then import them into c:geo. I do this about once a week or so. If I think there is a newer log that is necessary to read then I re-download that cache using c:geo.

    I import the caches so I don’t have to rely on data service which isn’t that great when I get away from the main roads. About the only data I use is for logging caches and I don’t even do that very often.

    My wife uses a Garmin Etrex 20 and the phone is equally good to the GPS. Any waypoints we take are always done with the Etrex.

    I don’t see the point of souvenirs.

    We have an Etrex 20 and it is more accurate than the Etrex Legend we formerly used.

    Acquires GPS signal fast and keeps a lock and does paperless caching and is easy to use.

    On Amazon for $166.66 right now.

    Maybe in the future an email should be sent out to all the members so there are more members that vote.

    in reply to: Double logs?? #1964105

    I have had duplicate logs with c:geo on my phone. Like other, I just delete one when I get home.

    December 11th 2001 is the closest capture after our registration date.

    As of today, there are 9399 active caches in 85 countries.
    In the last 7 days, there have been 3308 new logs written by 1402 account holders.

    There are currently caches in parks and at boat landings in Rice Lake and Barron County. I don’t recall there being any issues with any of them being removed by any Goverment Agency.

    I used to have a cache in a county park and it vanished in the winter during some logging. Last I checked there were caches in 2 of the County Parks with campgrounds.

    Rice Lake does not have an ordinance concerning geocaching and I am not aware of any ordinances that Barron County has.

    in reply to: Caching Burnout? #1949646

    We have been doing this 10 years and have only found 138 caches. I think the biggest thing that burned me out was the massive amount of microcaches that began appearing everywhere and when geocaching became a numbers game.

    When we started we would have to drive a decent distance to find a cache. The main reason was where we live and that geocaching was a new activity. The cache was usually at a place that we would have never went otherwise and we were able to see lots of great places.

    Last fall we spent a couple days caching. One day we went for one cache that we had been meaning to go to for some time that was pretty much in the middle of nowhere. We did not find the cache but the area was better than any cache that could have been there. The next day we went looking for 4 caches. All were micros and we ended up finding 2 of them. 1 was in a tree in a boulevard and the other on a sign in a parking lot. It was not a waste of a day by any means but not a whole lot of thought went into them.

    The numbers thing is pretty much self explanatory. If that is the game you play that is great but it not for me.
