I’m hoping all the caches will be in place right away?

Yes, all the caches will appear April 14. Most, but not all, will also be on gc.com. You will be able to download a booklet like last year describing each cache, the given coordintates, etc. It will also be possible to download the coordinates. It will not be possible to do the event caches totally paperless, because of the need to print out the booklet to verify being at the cache, but getting a punch.

I and my family are staying the night of the 13th at a hotel. (Bing – note to tourism bureau that revenue was generated from the event) Anyhow, if the caches are not listed tell the 14th is there going to be a station at the CITO event to load cache waypoints for those who do not have laptops and wireless connections?

Hopes desperately there will be….

whats going on with this event just a thought but how about having it at
Just n trails in leon the have miles and miles of trails , a frisbee golf corse,
and horse back riding it a great b and b and more the people who own it most likely, would like to have a event like this to show off their property and mabey
make a little money selling food or drink just a thought

Funny thing is about 1 year ago I asked them about putting a cache on their trails and they said sure but ALL geocachers would have to pay to use the trail(s). This is a big no no.

So, what is the status of the coming event? Is there one?

For a start I won’t be visiting Brown county parks….until they repeal the fee. I still think the Business chambers in the county need to be contacted (perhaps with a form letter sent to each chamber) and informed of how some communities actually encourage and greatly benefit from the money geocachers bring in.
Perhaps we could voice our opinions http://www.co.brown.wi.us/url]HERE

Sounds like interesting ideas. I do wonder if an organized boycott of Dane County and Brown County would have enough of an economic impact to raise the awareness of tourism officials and the hotel/restaurant businesses that cater to geo-tourists.

In comparison…

I do not attend any gun shows, boat shows, fairs, and the like activities that charge people to have access to the grounds. I find it unbelievable that these places want to charge me about $5 a person to enter their show to buy things. Would you pay $5 to your grocery store to enter and buy their food? (footnote 1) Now I have personally boycotted anyplace like this for I’m not going to pay them for the privilege of being able to shop there and I’m sure not the only one. The problem with this is the economic impact is negligible and who cares what few others or I think.

Now I agree that NO cache should be placed in these areas and while our lack of visits will never be noticed directly by money, it was not there to start so you can’t say it is a loss. However, we can make sure that places that support geocaching get our full attention and make these places aware what they have basically banned.

The Geocaching community needs to as a whole take a stance not to place or hunt caches at the locations that charge fees. Yes, it’s a boycott in basic form but boycott has harsh tone to it. A more subtle reminder of what their area is not possibly receiving though tourism is more important than just telling them that geocachers will boycott them. You kind of done this already but these areas need to see more often what other areas are doing and the good press behind it.

Footnote 1 – I know there are a few stores that charge a membership fee for the great savings you get in buying bulk. Most of the time people don’t buy enough or the right items to actually recoup the cost of such membership fee. You also restricted to what they have in stock at the time. If you go to another store, you’re wasting your membership.

Someone asked in a recent post if ammo cans float. Could it be that this was a test and some Joe found it in a river/creek and took the 1/2 filed can out of the water and placed it out for the owner to find.

Ok I’m really reaching here. I can not think of why someone would place 1/2 filed ammo can under power lines.

I would delete any log made by someone in a Michigan sweatshirt as well. The nerve of some people. 😉

I not sure I know enough to make a educated vote. The trails that I have seen only require the pass for those who are doing activities such as horseback riding, ATV, Bicycle, Cross country skiing to just name a few. I have yet to come across one that had a fee just for normal walking. How many and where are these trails that require a fee for those walking?

in reply to: Misuse of DNR forms? #1872133

Only people that should be asking him for copy or verification I believe are the approvers and other state officials that DNR feels that need them.

With the freedom of information act, the DNR might have its hands tied.

Just for those who would like to know.

I decided long ago I would never cross reference the log book against online records. While I find it slightly annoying that the person blatantly said he did not sign, I figure I would let it be. I however still feel that people should sign the log. While I will never check who signs and does not I do feel that this is an open door for scandals who would take advantage of this just so they can just virtually log caches. This leads down another path that has way to many opinions and justifications which all sides have good and just stance. So, based on this the fact, he did not sign log and it will just be annoying to me but that’s how that person wants to do geocaching and that is also his right. Thanks for your opinions again. Always good to see how others feel and look at how geocaching SHOULD be done.

There are so many missing or just being held that it might be easier to ask “Who has never had a TB lost or held captive?”.

in reply to: Palms vs. Daylight Saving Change #1871216

Also note that both ways are just a soft fix.

From Palm
All users: In the event of a hard reset, this update will need to be installed and run again on your device.

Regardless of which way you go, if your PALM does have a hard reset, which mine has done 2 times in 1 year, you will be back to square one.

Yes. It’s not only for the WGA but the surrounding community in other states. All are welcomed and I believe the WGA just ask that people register in advance. Anyone can correct me if I’m wrong on this.
