My general take on the cache of the month is 2 fold.
One, it is a nice way to give credit to caches that are nice and allows a way for the WGA members to expresses their like and appreciation for a cache.
Two, it is naturally going to be flawed system. As pointed out with a majority of cachers located in lower east part of the state the chances of a cache that is further away being voted on compared to a new one close to that area being a winner is slim since you should only be voting on a cache you been to. Look at the current votes for this month. Some of the caches in this area I think are great haven’t even had 7 people visit them this year.
The cache rating system would be nice but for it to truly work once again it is subjected to multiple problems some of witch have already been pointed out. I would like to see such a system but actually on GC.com. When someone logs the cache it would also like you to rate it. This would serve to show good caches and also point out to owners and approvers which caches suck and should be removed. It is important though that rating not be tied to a user to prevent retaliatory remarks on that person cache.
Example:
John Doe cache is visited by me and I mark his cache as 2 out of 5 (5 being best). Later John Doe goes to one my caches and marks it a 1 just because he is pissed I marked his cache a 2.I also ask who would setup and manage this information if not by GC.com? If getting data from GC.com is already a problem, who is going to enter all caches in the WI area by hand and maintain it as caches are added, archived, and disabled.
If you can work all that out then you can also easily make the House of Brew info as well.
I think cache of the month should stay but realize that the Milwaukee – Madison area holds the most control over what actually wins.

Oh…..
I thought that was like a write in, not an option to actually get a cache to be placed on there for voting.
I have to ask a simple yet important question. I might have missed it but I really have not found how to submit a cache for cache of the month.
I been to the “cache of the month” page but I seem not to be able to find a place to submit a cache for the next round. If this is on that page could someone point it out?
I will ask since the question has not been asked yet.
Why don’t you sponsor the site yourself if the interest is so strong?
This is not a question to be a butt just wondering is there a technical reason or other reason why you don’t just take it over.
It is a shame that people would leave items such as an empty Tic Tac box and the alike but I’ve seen this as well. While this is a problem with what cachers are leaving it seems to me that there is also a slight relation to how often a cache is maintained by the owner. The more junk allowed to pile up in a cache = more junk to be left since future cachers only see that junk. This is not an attack against any specific owner but I seen the logs where the owners are only looking after their cache once a year and those caches are typically filled with junk.
This kind of goes back to how many caches should an owner have. Typically I hear as many as they can take care of. I only have two caches right now but I guarantee that they are not filled with junk and I check on them often. By keeping the cache up people probably view it better and won’t leave junk.
Don’t get me wrong it is not JUST the owners fault. Some cachers are not trading properly. But by not properly maintaining the cache invites more junk.
This also could be a problem with the region. Are caches closer to the cities filled with more junk than those in rural areas?
I only once so far came across a cache while traveling to FL that was totally filled with pure junk. I totally dumped the cache contents into a bag, except log book, and restocked the cache with a few items so it would not be empty. I only did this once and will defiantly not be something I do often since not my job to take care of other people’s caches. I seen a few post before how some people would replace damaged caches as well.
Anyhow…
Typically I leave behind lapel pins, (new) mouse pads, can cozies, key chains, compasses, mini flash lights, hot wheels cars, mini calculators, lanyards, and such.Things we found that were neat. A laser pointer (used it for several science experiments for the girls), a used gift card for Best Buy that had a few dollars on it (Daughter found the cache so she took it with no idea that it would have money on it. I thought it would be blank.). Beanie babies for or geodog, a geode that the girls were able to break open.
OK thanks. Thats to far from where my tb is staying. Its close to highland beach, which if far from coco.
Where in FL if you don’t mind me asking? I have a TB down there I like to have picked up.
If I read this right the Nature Center can’t host it but I could host the event with coordination with the Nature Center and it would be listed since that follows the guidelines in Example D.
Is this correct?

Uhhmmm… wow
Not to sure what to say about that. Oh I give it a shot….
I personally don’t care what others do and how they do it unless it directly affects me. If I went to a cache to find a coin and it was not there because it was a virtual coin I would be pissed (just a little). I’m of the touch it – feel it to log it type.
Just to show how far I take it with MYSELF.
I went to an event recently and was able to touch and feel the coins while at the event. I did not log a single coin yet since I’m still at conflict with myself at not actually finding the coins in a cache. I might be taking it too far but as I said it’s just how I view it and has no bearing on others.
Part of me however thinks that having coins listed in a cache that are not really there is wrong. (Lost coins is another story) I say this since most cache trips now take a better part of a day and I not sure about others but I would be disappointed if part of my trip was to hit caches with coins in them and find out that the coin never really existed in the cache in the first place.
This is just food for thought. Not telling people that they have to change things or want things changed but some people should possible consider the slight deception their cache has and how travelers will view it.
On the GC.com forums some talked about just sending a photocopy of the coins out so it could not actually be stolen. If the photocopy came up missing the owner make new photocopy and send it out again and never loose the coin itself. While this does sound like a great idea the touch it – feel it part me would feel cheated and I would not log the coin.
As I stated in original post it would just be nice to see more coins in caches. The how, why, what of the whole thing is still up to the individuals.
I thought that what the FOR Sale section was for — commercial post by WGA members
I tried once to utilize an old fashion compass but the darn thing did not work properly. I tried to get it to work in various ways but at no time could I get the compass to display my coordinates, so I left it in a cache.
I utilize a Lowrance Phd and it has the built in compass but it works off of the GPS satellites to get its bearings and define direction. I take an external antenna with me when going into thick woods to insure I keep a good lock. I found one nice feature of this that has increased my usage of the external antenna for rough terrain. I can have the GPSr in my pocket in safe place while I climb or help my kids along and know that while the GPSr would normally loses signal being covered up the external antenna insures that it does not so no need to actually stop and wait for a new fix.
In short, if you have problems in the woods invest in an external antenna if your unit has the capability.

Don’t think the wood is all that expensive to buy (Hubby does woodworking) and just need the bolts to put them together. THEN hand deliver them.I guess depending on the number of Premier Memberships we’d get we could decide for sure… that’s “IF” we decided to do somethig like that.

Sorry when I think of benches for a park I think of the ones made from recycled plastic. It has the environmentally friendly angle and they last.

Off the subject, yes, but I like it. I think someone else mentioned making park benches that could be donated to parks. I can forsee making a bunch of these benches with an engraved nameplate on the backrest- “Donated by the Wisconsin Geocaching Association- N42 37.698 W88 07.712”.What a great way to promote the sport and open doors with parks!
This would be nice after we, the WGA get some things for our own purpose like a possible kit for presentations.
Park benches run about $150 for sturdy basic bench – $380 for longer more durable benches. Add shipping & handling for such heavy items and then to get a name pate made for each bench. 2-5 benches a park the cost can add up fast for one single park.
It is a good idea and possible something to look after if we can secure such funds.
To me parks that should be considered are ones the 1st let us have the campout/picnic at and then ones that let us hide caches at.
Good idea and should be considered to be one of those simi long range goal.
