I never go without a compass. I have my e-trex in a cell phone case, with a pin on compass on top. I just check my GPS for the direction while I am at a stand still and then follow the compass in that direction because under tree cover the GPS seems to do to much hunting. I have noticed sometimes that it is telling me to go one direction then almost a total opposite. That is why I usuall stand still in an open area. A compass is ecspecially good to have anyway in case your batteries die, OR Bush turns off the GPS signal.
