My background is primarily in IT and Programming, however I have quite a bit of experience in other areas as well, such as Project Management. With that background, I have a lot of experience with problem solving, task management, and an understanding of how to effectively drive a task to completion.

As a side gig at my job, I also help out with the event planning committee for the various activities and events put on throughout the office.

        Greetings BigJim!

That’s a great, however very tough question to answer! If there’s one caching adventure that comes to mind, I would have to say it was the trip to Seattle to GC Headquarters. I was on a trip for work to a week long conference in Seattle with a co-worker/friend. He vaguely knew what Geocaching was so I explained it, and decided to drag him across the city in an Uber to Headquarters. The fun part was explaining to the Uber driver to stop randomly in the middle of the road because “the coordinates say stop here”. Then, the next difficult part was walking into the very nondescript building hoping we were in the correct place. Being the total nerds we are, we luckily passed by a Google office in the same building, which was neat to see as well. Once we arrived, we talked with the staff member at the counter who oddly was also a Wisconsin Native!

As for a Wisconsin specific cache/adventure, I would have to say my favorite find thus far is “Holy Hill What A View (GC7B9H2)”. This cache in the fall provides some spectacular views of the surrounding area.

          Hello amita17!

I would say one of my geocaching qualities is persistence. I like to see things through to their completion, even if it’s a five star difficulty blade of grass cache container in the middle of an open field!

            Excellent question!

It really depends on how terrifying the others are at their driving skills (I joke). Generally I prefer to be the driver, because I like to see others having a fun time while I focus on the navigation. Realistically, it’s situational. If it’s my car, I’m going to drive. If I’m in another persons car and it’s full, then I will typically choose one of the back seats.

Which reminds me…I need to schedule a caching road trip for this year yet!

              Greetings!

In my current job I am part of a team of 7 people who perform roughly the same job duties. Over the years we have worked hard to build it up to the point it’s at today. Each of us knows they can depend on anyone else on the team for for help, and guidance. In order to build the team to the strong point it’s at today, we make sure we’re always communicating, sharing what we’re working on, sharing knowledge, show appreciation such as a “virtual high five”, and most importantly we hold each other accountable for their own work. Outside of work we have also found it very powerful to meet regularly to socialize. With all of this, we have grown a very well oiled team that respects each other, and are all willing to jump in and help in the blink of an eye.

                Hello amita17!

For me personally, I’m a very flexible person that’s eager to jump in and learn something new, even if it’s completely out of my comfort zone. Off the top of my head, if there’s one area of being on a Board that I am inexperienced with, it would definitely be any of the book keeping/financial related activities. Outside of that, I have a wide range of experience with event planning at my job, keeping track of tasks, leading efforts, etc.

                  Hi Silyngufy!

I think committees are almost always a good thing. They help distribute the work, and help keep people focused on a smaller subset of tasks that are not necessary for everyone to be involved with. If I had to think about when a committee could hinder something, I’d say it would be when the effort is small enough that it doesn’t make sense to have a committee formed.

As for how to form a committee, I would first look for volunteers that are interested in the effort, and potentially depending on what the effort is, open it up to community members for outside involvement as well.

                  Great question!

                    Hey Mark!

I have a couple of personal caching goals this year –
                    – Grab at least one cache all the way north near the Apostle Islands
                    – Continue chipping away at the “Mystery every day” challenge cache (thanks to another cacher for getting me hooked on challenge caches this last year!!)
                    – Continue the IAT series and maybe even finish it off this year (bit of a stretch goal)
                    – Find Alvin or Walter (GC3ZMA7) — Seriously…anyone have any tips on this one they’re willing to share???
                    – Grab the oldest cache from the neighboring states (close enough to a Wisconsin specific goal)

From a BOD perspective, one thing I want to achieve is to see what I can do to help with the WGA Website, as I have a background in web design and it’s something I enjoy doing on the side. The more I browse the website, the more thing I find that could be improved.

From a non-geocaching perspective, it’s to buy a house, but we’ll have to see what the market does this year!

                    Take care!

                      Hello Marie!

This is something I deal with every day at work. Not everyone will agree, but you go with the majority vote. Sometimes you’ll be voted against, but it’s best to just continue moving forward. Need to keep the “end goal” in focus, and do what’s best for the greater good of the group, and those that would be affected by the decision. Another key point is to maintain respect for everyone you’re working with, even if you don’t agree.

On the other hand, if there is something you’re truly passionate about but others are not seeing it your way, one thing I have done in the past is take a step back, and verify if the others are truly understanding the message you’re trying to relay. It’s possible the vote against you could be something as simple as miscommunication.

                        Howdy BeccaDay!

For me, delegation comes naturally. Part of this comes from my career in IT as we are involved in a lot of project related work. One of the more recent projects I was involved with had me specifically leading a subsection of the overall project, which involved all of the planning, and delegation to the rest of the team in order to drive the project across the finish line on-time (it went without a single bump). In addition to all of the project work, I am also a backup to my manager, so when he is out of the office, it’s up to me to ensure my teams workload is managed properly.

You’re absolutely correct — sometimes it is just easier to get things done yourself. However, I believe it is also good to hold others accountable for the tasks they are responsible for. In the past, if there’s been a team member that isn’t handling their tasks properly, I’ve reached out to the person and worked with them to see what we can do together to help resolve the problem.

If there is something I’m tasked with that I’m not sure how to handle, I’ve found it’s much easier to ask someone for help, rather than explain later why it was done incorrectly, and cause re-work for myself (or others). All of this combined can lead to a well oiled machine that keeps chugging along.

                          Hello Hack1of2!

My personal belief is that the BOD should be doing at minimum most of the work, however they should also allow the opportunity for community members to be involved if desired. My thinking that some people may feel passionate about a particular event, or initiative and want to help out with the planning process, but are unable to make a full commitment to a BOD position. In addition, this would allow for more direct input about particular events from the community members.
