Thanks so much for the help! I can’t imagine WHY this was dropped the way it was, but I am thankful its been found. And yes, the rescue time was outstandingly impressive. Thanks Cachew!
02/12/2007 at 10:24 pm in reply to: need to know anything about megellans meridian gold gps #1770115$120 seems steep for a discontinued unit. I think that’s what I paid two years ago for my gold. But then I have not surfed the sales to know otherwise. I like my gold….it’s easy to use, the screen is big, the kids can use the buttons. It has flaked on my twice now, with all data just evaporating into the stratosphere….one time was just when we finished caching for the day. What burned me was that if we had not just finished, we would have just finished! No support from Magellan. However, I am not planning on upgrading, despite this problem.
I have never been creeped out by any cacher I’ve met….but I have been creeped out by muggles. So…….for an opportunity to cache in a unique area which might have creepy muggles in it. I’d go for it. AND I like the suggestions for checking out the situation first. PQ
Oooooooo! Now THAT’s a tip. I’m going there now. Thanks! Linda
thanks for the information. I’ll try them next. It’s functional now, but I’m am worried that I will be “in the field” and lose my data again. Linda
Well, I’m not feeling lonely anymore, but still can’t solve this thing. I sent an email to magellan, and no one has even acknowledged it, other than the auto reply bot. Grrrrrrrr.
I agree with Lightningbug’s mum…..don’t over do. I only take my kids on LARGE caches (hey put out more ammo boxes, people) with short (2mi or less) hikes to keep them interested. I like the ones centered on a theme (there are some in Kettle Morraine like this) or ones with big payoffs, like the Dino Dash series north of Milwaukee. But they love seeing the wildlife, picking up sticks and trading trinkets. Getting in the woods is essential–it teaches them so much! PQ
Picked up the Foretrex 100 at the Kenosha Aldi for $69.99 yesterday. It’s soooooo cute. I can strap it to my bike handles, or stick a velcro strip to my dash to mount it there. No cable, so it’ll cost you extra if you want to download from your computer. Don’t know if it’s compatible with any other garmin cables. It’s a basic unit, but I got it mainly for biking. Aldi does not take checks or credit cards, so I actually had to dig out my pin for the atm. I figure if I own 7 different cameras, I can justify owning two different gpsrs. Linda
But what about Spunky the Weather Dog? Does Spunky still forcast? I bet he’d be a great geocacher and I’d love to meet him on the trail. In fact, meeting pets have been one of the great bonuses of caching.
Tell Master Nai, that I have some caches in mind, but I stuck them on hold due to the large volume of great caches that have popped up in Ktown lately. (Kenosha is a GREAT place to cache!) Maybe in springtime…..
I started “treasure hunts” two years ago and it is the most hotly requested birthday game in our family and among the girl’s friends. I do NOT use a gpsr since I have only one. I divide the kids in teams of 3-4 kids and then gear the clues to their ability levels (ie: the 8yr old gets written clues or a map to decipher, the 6 yr old gets pictures, usually close ups or distance shots so they have to think). Then I hide about 4 stages for each team (we have 5 acres to work with, although I’ve run them successfully on the 1 acre portion). Otherwise, the game runs much like a multi-cache when you use the hints only. Plant the next cache clues in the previous. My first game was when the youngest was 4 and they do get the concept quickly! I apologize for the late posting, but I’ve been busy and haven’t checked this page lately. If you haven’t done it, try it, it’s fun and gets the kids running around and thinking. Linda
Vince Condella geocaches??? Wow. Hey, when to I get to meet Master Nai? Linda
The PolskaFamily will be traveling to Canada next year, so I’ve checked out the OFFICIAL government web page: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html
As I read it, air and water entries to Canada NOW require passport. Land entries are still valid with birth certificate and ID. As of Dec. 31 2007, even land entries will require passport.
It sounds like the US will be developing some sort of national ID that will act as a passport for Canada/Mexico crossings (only) for US citizens.
My kids can get very carried away with the whole caching experience. I try to scope the scene out first and warn of barbed wire, poison ivy, drop-offs, etc. You’ve got to be fast! As for holes, they have learned to only stick their hands in large ones where they can clearly see the cache. They are 5 and 8, but it took lots of supervision and talking to before, during, and after the excursion. We have had minor injuies, but nothing different from what they get at home playing in the yard.
I’m impressed with the floating ammo box. I remember finding that cache, and never thought it could travel so far…. As for cache cleanup, I just got a prod from another cacher that my daughter’s was flooded out…and not the stage I expected! I can’t believe they waded in and found it! The final was soaked, and I closed it out till the waters receed. PQ
I have to agree with you. My kids have a hard enough time waiting for their bugs to move in regular caches, I can’t imagine them being stuck in a “take one only if you leave one” environment. We’ll be heading to OH next month….there is a bug hotel near our house. Should I go grab a bunch for the ride? I’m not sure…. I’ll probably contact the cache owner for their opinion on the matter (they aren’t my bugs and it isn’t my cache). PQ
