Another option would be to take the Metra UP-North Line from Chicago to Kenosha ($6.10 one way) and then catch a ride to the park from a fellow geocacher. I’d volunteer, but I don’t know if I’ll be there because I try not to make plans more than a month in advance. More info at http://www.metrarail.com

It took a few days, but an Illinois team finally captured the flag. Tishman, Linus & Lucy crossed the Cheddar Curtain with hopes of taking the flag back to Illinois. They succeeded and we should be on the lookout for Capture The Flag VI.

I placed Capture The Flag V today, and it is now in the approval process. I’ll be sending the Illinois teams to Magnolia Bluff County Park in the north west corner of Rock County.

The flag is back in Wisconsin!!

    Copy of my log:

I crossed the cheddar curtain with passport in hand, but no one seemed to care that I had crossed the border so I put it away. I found the flag in less than five minutes (I had checked a similar location at a previous cache) which left me wondering why this deserved a 3 1/2 star difficulty. I grabbed the cache and sat in a nearby location to sign the log. I then noticed what could have made this cache difficult. As I was sitting there waiting for a few people to leave the area, I watched six Rocford Police cars drive by. One actually parked across the street from me and the officer went inside the park district office. So it would appear that, in locating the cache only a few blocks from the police HQ, Team Putz was trying to have a Cheesehead arrested for suspicious activity. Well, now I have the flag, and after waiting ten minutes was able to replace the cache container. Now I just have to think up a good location for Capture The Flag V.

Edit: I added this line to my log
(Certain facts in the log above are exagerrated for story telling purposes only. In other words, you probably aren’t in danger of being arrested while searching for this cache.)

Capture The Flag IV has been placed by Team Putz, in downtown Rockford. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=2c505034-44d6-4f1d-9d61-18ee94c6d68c

I see this topic has also made it to the Groundspeak forums http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=66711
I see that wildearth2001 says that the rivalry thing won’t work, he obviously doesn’t know about how long there have been Wisconsin/Illinois rivalries. Maybe it has something to do with Illinois moving their border 60 miles north and in the process taking land from Wisconsin Territory.
Wait…. That would mean that Winnebago County was originally in Wisconsin.

The way I understand it from Jeremy’s posts in the groundspeak forums is that the image is generated by the first request, then that image is stored on their server for 2 hours. After 2 hours the next request will update the stats and generate a new image. This was to reduce the load on the database server, so it doesn’t have to look for the stats every time someone returns to their home page that contains their stats image.

I thought these two were interesting

I checked my notes on this one since I was the last to find it on January 3. The container is a rectangular metal box (HighWayKind’s March 29,2003 log says it is a French military first aid kit box) and I believe it was under a log, but I’m not sure about that. I really only remember this one because I thought the box was interesting.

I finally figured it out. The blip in West Virginia is actually a traditional cache with a locationless cache the 100,000 mile rest stop. I actually logged it in my driveway when my 1994 Chevy Astro hit 100,000 miles. If I ever make it to West Virginia I’ll try to get to the actual cache.

The only problem I see with this is that the gpx file doesn’t contain caches that have been archived, and the pocket query generator doesn’t allow you to select archived caches. If caches are archived after your first query you can merge the data from your first query with a new one to show any that have been archived in the time between queries. Of course this still means your map won’t show any that were archived before your first query.

Edit 1/27: I guess I’m not the only person looking to have PQs search for archived found caches. http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=62991

I added this to my Caching Through The Snow log and thought I’d post it here too. Okay, I really added it to my log so the image would be stored somewhere to link to.

I downloaded my track log and discovered that I had walked 6.4 miles while Caching Through The Snow. I also discovered that while the parking was 0.6 miles from the cabin as the crow flies, the road from the parking to the cabin was 0.9 miles. Now I know why my feet hurt.

I’d like to give my thanks again for this great event. I’d also like to thank Mother Nature for the terrific weather (as terrific as you can get this time of year in Wisconsin). I would hate to imagine what this would have been like with no sun to warm us and some wind to chill us . And now I think I’ll get back to taking care of my aching feet.
