    Congrats on the century mark!

In the old days when I ran sled dogs at night a headlamp was very useful. At least until I stopped at a tavern and the bartender told me they didn’t serve miners.

This thread reminded me how nice they were. I have an LED flashlight and didn’t think of LED headlamps. I think that if someone giggles at the headlamp I can shine it in their eyes and persuade them to stop snickering by applying the multi D-cell Maglite to their head with monotonous regularity.

Congrats, Chiot! It would have been sooner if Edna Crabapple still lived there, eh?

World Wide Quarters is not located at 45°/90°. Numerous logs indicate it’s roughly .2 mile east of the marker. I checked it with expertGPS using the topo maps and satellite photos and both point to the field in the corn. My copy of the DeLorme atlas & gazetteer also indicates the actual coordinates are in the field and not next to the road where the marker is. Perhaps Mr. Gesicki made a minor error when he set up the little park.

I believe that if the marker was in the correct location, the errors would be evenly distributed around the mark, rather than all of them indicating that it’s too far west.

Congrats, Tenner! You have some of the best hides in the GRB area.

in reply to: Upgrade to Garmin 76S? #1745783

I’ve been looking at that one myself. I just logged #100 with a screaming yellow zonker and have been happy with it. I would like WAAS, mapping, and a quad helix antenna for better reception under the leaves. The 76S has more memory than my first pentium. It’s interesting to note that T&B say the Garmin 12 has a better lock under the trees than the 76S, but anything has to be better the the yellow eTrex! Does anyone have any comments about signal reception in the vicinity of rock walls or large buildings? On the other hand, if I can make 1000 using the inscrutable little yellow devil maybe Garmin will pay me lots of money to hawk their products!

Thanks, folks. That last one of BantamC’s should be called “Little Shop of Horrors” because that plant tried to devour me! On the plus side, we did so much back road driving today that I have my wife just about convinced that I need a new GPSr with WAAS and mapping capabilities, not to mention a quad helix antenna. Christmas is coming, dear!

    Congrats, Ron!

in reply to: Greenbay to Iron Mountain #1745512

There is a lot of construction in Green Bay on Hwy 41. I suggest taking Hwy 43 north if you had planned otherwise. If you go that route, there are several virts in the Manitowoc/Two Rivers area that are not too time comsuming and quite a few in Green Bay proper. “Barkhausen” is a nice one that’s located just north of GRB. Lil’ Otter has a couple in Oconto and surrounding area but that’s a bit east of your route and BantamC has “Bridge over the River Oconto” that’s a little west but is one of my favorites. I live in Oconto and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. I’m very familiar with the area between Green Bay and Crivitz.

in reply to: The value of virtual caches #1745019

Due to our unease about being in the woods during hunting season my wife and I have a virt-only (mostly) trip planned for tomorrow. One physical cache and 6 virtuals are scheduled. I actually got her to take a day off of work to go on this. Can a Garmin V be far behind? I enjoy the virts mostly because they get me to places I normally would not go. Some may think they’re lame and others may not, but it’s my belief that the value of this game is the quest, not the destination.

I’m brand new at this and went out and bought a Garmin eTrex because it was less than a hundred bucks. Perhaps if my wife becomes more enthusiastic about the whole geocaching thing I’ll upgrade but in the meantime this and a magnetic compass works for me. BTW, thanks for the comments on WAAS, I was wondering if I should have picked up a unit with that capability and am relieved I made the correct decision.
