During the past 2 years as a BOD member I attended and helped with the events. Prior to being a BOD member I still attended most of the events so I don’t see any problem with attending events, no matter what part of the state they are in. I am from West Central Wisconsin.
How confident are you in your ability to adapt, not only yourself to the task of being a board member, but also the organization as a whole? I am very confident in my ability to adapt to the task of being a board member and the organization as a whole. I don’t believe I have any problems adapting to either task (which basically go hand in hand) in the past 2 years that I have served on the BOD.
Are their any particular situations that you would like to share about your ability to adapt? One example of my ability to adapt occurred at work last year; my position was being restructured and being awarded to someone else so I had to adapt to a new job. Many times we cannot control what happens but we can control how we react to it. How you react to something makes all the difference.
Finally, do you have any ideas for how the WGA could adapt and stay strong in Wisconsin for another 15 years? The WGA is a strong organization now and any organization is only as strong as its members so if we continue to listen to the members I believe we will continue to thrive. And I agree with the others we do have some issues with ease of use and social media. These are problems that will not be fixed overnight but will take time but with everyone working together toward the same goal, it should be attainable.FTP Happy Tuesday everyone
I have been on the board for the last two years and have never had an issue with “eyes watching” all I do. I do not believe there have been any issues with how I conduct myself, (even if I do dress up as a t-rex from time to time!!)
You are 100% right, help from the general membership is very nice and greatly appreciated. It is fantastic to see our members involved. As far as the website, if a member is helping they would need access but not to the entire website. They should be granted access only to the necessary areas. And as rawevil stated, this issue is being discussed by the current BOD. With the new BOD I hope this discussion continues. As far as handling the cash, there are usually at least 2 people involved. This also applies to reconciling things at the end of the day. And events which handle food there is always at least 1 person present certified in safe food handling.
01/18/2018 at 4:15 pm in reply to: Candidate Question – What Computer Skills Will You Bring to the BOD? #2057483I am pretty techy, and like rawevil, I know just enough to be dangerous! I also know enough to not change things if I’m not sure as I don’t want to crash the website!! I have helped quite a bit with the website but don’t know enough to even come close to being a webmaster. Many times it is not the computer skills but knowing the software that is being used. I helped alot with the geoart. Generally if pointed in the right direction I can figure it out.
Since the others have already copied and posted the by laws, I won’t do that. But I will say I believe promoting CITO’s and working with DNR and other land managers is still part of our purpose. The WGA has sponsored various CITO’s throughout the state. I am sure if a land manger would reach out to us in helping to remove invasive species, map trails etc we would definitely not tell them no. I can see where a mission such as this could easily be turned into an event in order to recruit help.
One of my job requirements is to train new hires. Many of these people have never done this type of work before and tell me I can’t do this. I encourage them, show them easier ways of doing the task and continue to work with them. Yes, some do quit before giving it a chance but the majority of them thank me for working with them and give it a chance.
With 9 people on the board it is unlikely that everyone will have the same idea. When that happens we talk it out and in the end the majority rules. Even if your idea isn’t the chosen one you pitch in an do what you can to help.
And yes when you are on the bod you do spend quite a bit of time doing dishes, working on cache pages, etc so you don’t really have a lot of time to cache but when you decide to run for the bod you have to commit yourself to the bod and member needs first. The caches will be there for you to find at a later date. The number of caches I have found each year since serving on the bod have dropped but I am enjoying serving the members.
As far as stepping out of your comfort zone, you have to do what is necessary even if it is hard for you. But the good part is, you are never really alone. The rest of the bod is there to encourage and help you along.
I have found about 8600 caches and have hidden 182 so I am both a hider and a finder. Unfortunately, Walkinadventure has a little bit of trouble finding my caches!!! (Sorry Chris, I had to!!)
I found my first cache in 2006 but really didn’t become an active cacher until 2008. Not sure when I became a WGA member but I attended my first WGA event (2009 WGA Geo -Picnic) in 2009. Since then I have attended many events (actually I don’t miss many!!) but most recently was the 2017 Fall Geo-Picnic, 2017 WGA These Are The Pancakes You’re Looking For, 2017 WGA Spring Not So Pleine Pancake Breakfast, 2017 Spring Campout and 8th Annual Chili and Hot Dog Feed.
Sorry but I don’t think I have a spirit animal.
I have done my share of park and grabs and they definitely aren’t my favorites but they do serve a purpose (provided they are maintained). Some people are not able to take long walks in the woods (they don’t know what they are missing) so p & g’s are the kind of caches they find. Unfortunately, it is getting harder to find a container big enough to hold swag for the kids. The kids love to trade things, even if it is just a McDonalds toy. I personally think that geocaching is still family friendly. Education is the key to better quality caches. Remember, many people hide the type of caches that they find so when you take someone out to introduce them to caching, take them for a hike in the woods (if they are physically able) to find a good old ammo can!!
So, what about talking about the caches you do like?
I like a variety of caches. Some days it’s gadget caches and creative containers and other days it’s a nice walk in the woods.
This is a question that I really can’t answer. After reading this I went back and checked to see which caches I gave favorite points to and it brought back lots of memories (thank you for that). They were all special to me for one reason or another. Some because of the fun we had while searching for it, some for the location, some for the creativity, some for the adventure we encountered getting to ground zero, etc. There are just way too many great caches to pick one and say it is my favorite.
So the group campsite is in the Wisconsin Ridge campground?
(from DNR page)The outdoor group camp has 5 sites with a capacity of 130 persons. The outdoor group camp is near the Wisconsin Ridge campground.
