Why doesn’t someone ask the archivist indeed.

I archived a whole slew of geocaches, including Earthcaches, simply because I was far less active in my geocaching participation.

Each cache hider seeks his or her own level of maintainable caches. When the activity of geocaching becomes a burden, it’s time to back off. I know that most cachers would rather see a cache archived rather than become poorly maintained.

In the case of an Earthcache, maintenance involves answering inquires about the cache. When I archived them, I had neither the time nor desire to read and answer all those emails every day.

If it’s for Scouting, then Camp Phillips – Beaver Point campsite is the absolute best in the state.

Tower Hill State Park outside Spring Green. Might be stretching it for mileage.

Now what kind of wierdos would turn a perfectly good piano into a geocache? Come on now, get serious 😉

I’ve had a number of PMs requesting this recipe, so I’ll just post it here. I first made this pie to serve at the GeoScare Event last year at Bong State Park (see, if you had been there, you could’ve tasted it)

I used two cans of Pumpkin pie filling and two boxes of pumpkin bread mix. Read the directions on the cans and boxes to see what other stuff you’ll need (eggs, allspice, etc). Now here comes the tricky part.

Surround yourself with some Scout Moms who think you’re nuts becasue you can’t make a pumpkin pie in a dutch oven and thus get kinda smarty pantser about it. Obtain a Julia Child accent.

Mix the pie ingredients into one bowl and the bread ingredients in another. Pretend you actually know what you’re doing. Make sure the Moms are watching over your shoulder – make sure they are shaking their heads about now.

Now this next part is really important so pay extra close attention:
Pour the PIE mixture into the dutch oven (I used a 12″ dutch oven by the way) and spead it out evenly. Carefully pour the CAKE mixture on top of the pie mixture. Careful not to mix the two together.

In your best Julia Child accent, explain to the Moms about how important this step really is – do not mix the two together. The cake must cook on the top – this is vital for the pie’s success!

Watch in stunned horror as the cake mixture slowly but surely sinks into the pie mixture.

With a straight face, Look the Moms right in the eyes as you swirl the two mixtures together – not blend – swirl. Come up with some nonsense excuse about how this was suposed to happen.

Put the lid on the dutch oven, put about 8 coals below and 8 on top and walk away for about a half hour.

Check the pie – it’s still runny. add 16 more coals and another half hour.

The pie will not get solid in the dutch oven as it’s cooking (the oven is too hot), but an hour is good. Remove the lid and as it’s cooling, it solidifies. It’s best served a tad juicy though.

    add whipped cream and serve.

I swear that this is the exact recipe that I used at the Geoscare event! There were no leftovers. I’ve used this recipe several times since and got the same results.

I make a spectacular pumpkin pie in a dutch oven on campouts. If anyone wants the recipe, let me know.

Good luck with your Crew. Camp Ohdakota (SE Wisconsin Council) has a bunch of Scouting geocaches. That’s be a good destination for your new Crew.

It’s unfortunate to see this – we’re hoping it’s an anomaly and the people doing this will stop. A good suggestion above regarding making the caches premium member listings. I’d rather leave most of them open to all, but I don’t want to keep replacing the containers! We’ll see how things go in a few weeks.

That’s a good idea unless the person responsible is a premium member

Good point. If I were ever to hide a cache at my home (not that I’m saying I would), I’d make sure it was a 1 star difficulty and list my address on the cache page and leave a really good hint as well.

It is nice to see this. I have a series of private caches that I placed at the request of the folks at Eagle Cave for the same purpose, something fun for their guests to do.

Thank you for placing this series Jay. One of my favorite groups of caches.

We’re attaching object to coins now? Have I been away from finding caches that long? Why not encase your coin in a larger container? You can write whatever you want on the larger container. I know that Hobby Lobby sells some really nice coin collecting stuff.

Now how can we be putting out more polution? Nobody can afford to drive anymore 😆

I can say that I am (was?) a cachaholic. I was so obsessed with hiding/placing caches that entire days were spent doing nothing else. My wife didn’t know to what degree I was obsessed and that’s really a good thing. I had devoted half of my office and half of my garage to caching construction. I was always on the lookout for anything that could be used as a cache container.

I was never a FTFaholic, so didn’t have that particular affliction, but the need to get into the field was always with me for several years. I turned to other listing websites because I wanted more, More MORE!!!!

When I stopped cold turkey 7 months ago, I wondered how long it would take to get caching out of my system. Turns out, the answer is about 2 months before I was no longer obsessing (that sure sounds like an addiction to me).

SO here I am now, thinking about new cache hides (but at a much reduced rate) and not yet acting on them. I never would have been able to hold off a year ago. I think about them now and again, but am not obsessing. I have spent probably 5 hours in the field in the past week picking up caches to archive and can honestly say that I wonder why I got so addicted.
