Right now we have Vanilla and Chocolate planned. if we have enough turn-out, we’ll go with strawberry as well.

There will also be hot fudge and all the toppings you can imagine.

Really…ALL the toppings I can imagine? Let’s have Pickle Relish then.

Jay, you and I are alike in many ways, including these feelings. I haven’t really hunted any caches seriously since February. I’ve placed a few renegade caches here and there. But the magic is gone, the excitement is gone. That unquenchable thirst has been quenched.

I too, have a list of archived caches that need to be picked up. I only have 13 caches that I give hoot about maintaining anymore. A cache goes missing, I archive it. I even switched my email info so that I wouldn’t get the log notices.

My reasons are many, but a complete break, of six months, from caching seem to have helped.

I just recently started lurking in the WGA forums again and indeed recently placed a new cache to be listed on Groundspeak. In fact, I left the 1942 Philco Problematic GPSr in northern Minnesota while placing that cache on my last visit. A year ago I would’ve actually driven 10 hours to go retrieve it, now I’ll just wait a few months until I go up there again.

There are a few new local caches that have peaked my interest and of course, the Wheypoint Coffee Clutch is a weekly staple I hate to miss. I don’t know if the days of driving 100 miles to go hit 20 caches will ever happen again. I doubt I’ll ever place caches at the pace I was setting a year ago.

Some people like me get so obsessed with a hobby like caching that we forget to do all the other things in life that make living so pleasant. My good geofriend Brkster once told me his secret to avoiding burnout – just do a few caches every week. I should’ve listened to him.

a Bears fan sneaks into the conversation
    …….boos and hisses abound…….

As a Bears fan, I’m really happy that Favre is gone.

There, now that I got that out the way, I feel the very best option didn’t happen and do we blame Brett or the Slackers (er, um – Packers)? Brett would’ve made a fantastic backup to the new guy. What more can a beloved, experienced quarterback do than help train the new guy to be his replacement?

No more injuries, no chance of having a horrible season with a new team, the fans still love you, your “legacy” is intact.

    That didn’t happen and it’s a shame

    um….moving caches aren’t allowed on Groundspeak. 😆

in reply to: Enough with the micro caches! Am I right, folks? #1892126

The majority of my cache placements have been micro caches. This discussion has caused me to examine my cache placement size reasons.

The first caches that I placed where in the 1-2 gallon water coolers that I got from the Goodwill store (about $3). Then I’d add swag items (around $15 worth) then the logbook (yeah, I used a book back then) and writing instruments ($3) then I’d add a camera (another $4). When all was said and done, I’d have $20-25 invested in the geocache. After checking on the cache a month later, it was filled with garbage and the camera was gone (I’ve only recovered one camera and it had “naughty” pictures on it).

I thought to myself, ” this is an expensive hobby!”

Turning to microcaches, I found that I could get by with about a $5 cache container (complete with typical Rogheff decoration) and a log book.

I got tired of personally providing the world with shiny new geoswag only to get rocks, business cards, bottlecaps and pinecones in return.

Initially, the reason was about money I suppose. Over time it was about the effort required to develop an interesting cache. It’s easy to dream up a unique micro or small cache. It’s difficult to properly camo an ammo can.

I live in an urban area, so finding an open area to place a larger cache was getting increasingly difficult. It’s easier to find a hiding spot for a micro than it is a regular cache.

I like finding all different sizes and types of caches, so I like to hide all different types and sizes of caches. My preference in finding (and hiding) is for a very devilishly difficult micro, so………..

I don’t quite understand the complaints about micros. Some of my very favorite caches have been micros hidden in the woods. I realize that many people don’t like those types. But you’re not being forced to go hunt those stashes. Stay away from them.

I personally dislike the ammo can, piled with branches, with wet garbage inside. I would never assume that it’s my duty to whine about these types of hides. I take it for what it is, then move on to the next.

That cache was a thing of beauty! I personally couldn’t find it (after numerous trips), I believe I had help from the Cacherclan…well..er..um…clan.

I sure do hope that your caches aren’t headed for the same fate as my very best. Sometimes it makes you wonder why you bother to make the really creative caches. The simple peanut butter jar remains in place – undisturbed.

I remember my thoughts when I saw his particular cache – it was something to the effect of, “No that can’t possibly be….OMG it IS!”

The only cache type that truly allows for “Leave No Trace” is a Virtual Cache. Merely arrive at a location and observe. Nothing to move.

The Leave No Trace movement has a website that is quite good http://www.lnt.org/programs/index.php

This puts alot of things into perspective for me.

The sponsorship thing is a little weird to get used to, but these two sponsors are also your own personal cache reviewers. Think of it that way.

I do have one major gripe about terracaching.com, its the ridiculous sponsor system. As people might already know when you join you need to get two sponsors by posting in the forums, otherwise you can’t use the site.

The issue I have had is sponsors revoking my sponsorship because I haven’t used the site in months, this has happened about 6 times. I wouldn’t care but that also revokes all the people I have sponsored too.

Maybe I am missing something but that alone is enough to turn me off. At least geocaching.com don’t have this popularity contest just to use the stupid site.

You don’t have to ask to get sponsored. I get requests all the time (through the system). Usually, when I log on to offer sponsorship, they already have 2 or three offers.

Navicache has a moving cache type. Could be one of those. The new coords may not have been updated yet.

Alright, here it is flushed out a bit. Needs to be simplified some and the WGA needs to be more dominant, but this will be my “official” submission.

I never looked a the WGA site that closely, I was referring to the Quick Links area which currently lists GC.com, The Grand High Poobah WI stats and It’s not about the numbers.

It was clearly evident that some of the elected leadership of the WGA feels that the rules set forth by Groundspeak are clearly the best and only rules that should be followed by the WGA.

Sounds like an opportunity for someone to evangelize other sites to the BOD to make them a more “official” part of the WGA site.

For now, all the external caching site links relate to gc.com only. Stat and other posted information (including default user name options) point to gc.com caches/info.

Until Navicache, Terracache, Bob’s Big Bulletin Board o’ Caches, and any other site out there become a more official part of this site, it’s logical that people assume WGA and gc.com are connected at the hip.

You need to read the WGA bylaws!
