Congrats to Tyedyeskyguy for the FTF

in reply to: Tree Climbing for a cache…Good or bad idea? #1881396

Some people like to climb trees. The cache rating should indicate what folks are up against. I’ve personally never hidden one. Oh, wait, yes I have.

I’ve personally only found one, and it terrified me (I have a fear of heights). But it was in my “Personal Clear of Unfound Geocache” zone, so I had to get the smiley.

Come to think of it, they only other cache that I was terrified to find (also in my PCUG, was placed by that very same geocacher. I won’t mention his name but it rhymes with Shybyeslyefry.

    Hhhhmmmmmmm, cache idea.

I know in the past, I’ve gone on a caching trip with a milestone in amongst the caches. The exact placement of the milestone depends on the order you log them. I sometimes loose track, was this my 8th or 9th today?

Ok folks, it’s placed and approved. I’ll let you know that it’ll become active Saturday morning and it’s at Camp Ka-Ha-Gon

in reply to: Geocaching during Hunting Season #1881306

I have a cute little story about geocaching in deer hunting season.

It seems my brother-in-law and a group of his buddies were out hunting in an area where I have several caches stashed. A couple of the guys were sitting in their deer stands when they saw two guys stroll across the open field and go nosing around in some brush.

“Those guys were looking for something,” I’m told.

“They nosed around, went into the brush and a few minutes later, they left!”

“Did they plant a bomb? Did they hide some money?”

The hunters had to go find out. What else was there to do on a non-productive deer hunting day?

They strolled over to the brushy area and after a little while, they found a box! Now up in northern Minnesota, my caches aren’t disguised very well – sorry folks. The muggles found the cache.

“What’s that? Should we open it?”

“There’s a bunch of junk in it.”

    “And a camera”

“Jeremy, drop your drawers, we’ll give them a photo to remember.”

    True story.

I placed number 199 today. The big one will be placed in the next day or four.

in reply to: Please Don’t Geocache & Drive! #1881239

You’re now the second person I know of who has had an accident directly related to geocaching. I’ll admit that I input coords while driving. I think I’ll stop that practice.

    Thanks for the reality check.

I have a question about the temp cache thing that Wisconsin gets blasted about so much in the forums.

What’s the purpose of the temp caches? If you’re going to the trouble of hiding caches, why not make them permanent?

There’s a reason we have a ratings system. A 4 star difficulty cache is not supposed to be easy to find. Why do people get upset when they can’t find it in 4 minutes (or three visits for that matter)? When I hunt a 3-5 star difficulty cache, I expect to have a difficult search ahead. I may even have to return several times. Don’t like 4 star hides? Don’t seek 4 star hides.

There’s a reason the system allows me to not tell you the size. That cache is designed to surprise you in the end. If I told you that you were looking for a dustbuster hanging on a tree, would you feel the same when you found it? Don’t like Unknown cache listings? Don’t seek unknown caches.

Is the long, beautiful hike that takes you to a scenic location in search of a regular cache, really worth the effort if all you find is a musty peanut butter jar, filled with moldy MacToys and an unusable log, in the end?

And lastly, those who don’t hide caches do not understand the difficulty it takes to get good coords. Interestingly, the gripe over bad coords has grown in the past year with the introduction of newer, more accurate GPSrs. Guess what, if a cacher uses an older model that isn’t terribly accurate, then the coords he/she comes up with are as good as it gets. Stop following the arrow down to the inch and just start looking for the thing!

Hide some caches, get the coords as accurate as you can. Then when you think your cache is perfect, have people berate it. Worse, have it stolen. You’ll see it’s not as easy as you assume.

To summarize: Play your own way

How about avoiding the types of hides you don’t like. There, that’s simple enough.

I like ALL types of caches. Hide them all.

in reply to: Pringlecaching Unniversity Event #1881002

OK, what gives? This is the second Event Cache in a row that I’ve hosted with people making comments about concerns for safety from hunting.

Why do people think I’d host an event in a hunting area?

There is NO hunting allowed at Bristol Woods Park! This is a County Park with a Nature Center and Nature trails frequented by Elementary School kids.

The logs I enjoyed the most came from The Fleeflammer

    and What the?

Thanks everyone. Sure is nice to hear such sweet things.

Zuma, I agree, we’ve never met. Sometimes, when you’ve been hanging around in the shadows long enough, it seems like you know the people whose names you see so often.

I do indeed hope to see many, many of you soon.

[insert shameless plug] Oooh, how about a certain Pringlecaching University Event coming up on Nov 17th ??? [/Shameless plug inserted]

I forgot about pill bottles. They are a little better than the old style film cans, in that they stay dry at first, but leak after a while do to opening and closing (they are designed to be thrown away, after all.)

    Deejay, you’re killing me here.

I’m in the middle of making plans for my 200th cache hide. I wanted it to be something reeeeally special. It was either going to be a Pill Bottle or Magnetic Key holder 😈 😈 😈

Now what am I going to do?
