I would think that the decision to provide online sales would depend, in part, whether a board member is willing to take charge and volunteer a large amount of personal time in setting it up, obtaining the necessary supplies, and then organizing and mailing out the orders.

I don’t see why it has to be a board member that does this. Pat has already volunteered. I would be happy to do some of the shipping, or even meet with Pat somewhere to work on it together. Once June 2 hits, I have lots of free time until September.

I am available to help too (especially with pre-shipping work). My kiddos would thoroughly enjoy a chance to hang out with Mr. & Mrs. S (and RT11 is old enough to help). If the timing falls the week before the CacheBash, we are out of pocket, but I think there is a ton of stuff that can be done ahead of time from an administrative standpoint.

I think it would be a good idea to develop a standardized/documented process so this can be done in the future by anyone that comes forth.

Sooner than you think. WI DOT does not allow geocaching on it property.
It is me belief that these type of caches should ever get approved.
Nothing will happen till some one gets severely hurt or killed along a road way. People who put these kind of caches out should ask themselves,”WOuld I want my child attempting to find this cache?”

which is exactly why the last round of StopSpots doesnt’ really appeal to me. My kids enjoy the thrill of being the ones to locate and grab the cache and I really don’t like to have traffic whizzing past.

    Still looking for more ideas.

ok – my two cents, since your begging(I mean asking)

Some of this is redundancy with the weekly Groundspeak, but things that would help me, but could create extra work for you:

Events by region – I don’t typically go look for them, but they prompt me to think about them when I see them in my area. The newsletter has them all lumped together and sometimes is a pretty long list.

Maybe highlight a Series Cache from around the state – there are tons of them – some are elaborate, some are P&G’s -highlight each type at some point.

Highlight a puzzle cache each week.

    Picture of the week?

Any interesting articles that link to how to get better use of your “tools” – gpsr, etc.

If you created a weekly schedule, with a topic for each day that you intend to post, you could narrow down your focus so you’re not running looking for ideas.

I enjoyed the satire/humor this week as well.

Again, it may be about presence and not content. How many members in the WGA are actively logging into the forums? How many Wisconsinites are geocachers? (and perhaps log into neither!)

These are just some popcorn ideas that I came up with. Some cachers will need none of this; some will enjoy it. It’s free, you’re doing it on your own time, and it’s easily deletable (sp) if a person chooses not to read. No harm done either way!

and I find twitter useless, so I won’t comment on that 😉

This could be something different but also a portal to guide people here to where all the cool people truly hang out.

to your point on this… you could pick one thread a week to “highlight” .. ie – come check out the discussion in the WGA forums this week on “blah, blah, blah” (mimicking my 4 yr old.)

There are some good convos about topics of interest that one might miss or one could learn from.

the other thing to consider is that it may not necessarily be about the content on the fb page, but the continued presence. I have geocaching friends that are WGA members, but they don’t really care to come in the forums. They do want to keep up with WGA news though and they are WGA fb followers. Just having the logo scroll consistently across one’s fb page, plants the seed and continued interest.

my two cents, since I only pop in sporadically. I find finding info in the forums complicated, unless I know what I’m looking for. Not a slam on the forums, just the nature of the beast.

On the fb page, I enjoy seeing it scroll on my page and then I can pursue further if I choose to look. Everything you posted this week I’ve found helpful. The GSAK training, for instance, is out of my notification range, but close enough that I could go. It did not come as a notification in my email, so I’m contemplating that one, but would not have known about it if you hadn’t prompted with fb.

rofl Beccaday as RT10 has a sweatshirt that is hanging in his room with a similar predicament… Gma warned him not to go into the brush and he went anyway. His sweatshirt got covered. I refuse to pick them all off for him (I did launder it in a lingerie bag and a lot of them came off (and I didn’t find them on anything else 😉 ). He’s got more work to do though…

I looked in the groundspeak threads and didn’t see anything about this, so I wonder if it’s an isolated Wisconsin case? very strange. we’ve been more inactive than that cacher. 😯

As a fifth grade teacher I feel qualified to answer that question. YES, when they think that they can get away with it.

this is why we are working on the “START OVER” concept….. yelling doesn’t resolve it, so he needs to start the conversation over. much better for my blood pressure that way.

Hey if she’s taking first born, I’ve got one to drop off today too…. 3rd day of school means cranky, mouthy 5th grader. He told me I should lock him in his room… doesn’t sound like a bad idea!

He adores Mr. and Mrs. S anyway, so he’d be good for you guys 😀

Isn’t signing your own log similar to hiding your own easter eggs.

pre-adoption or post-adopting out makes total sense.

We Archived our “South Park-Under Old Glory” nano, since a letterbox was placed in the base of the flagpole. Kept getting strange and conflicting logs!
That may be the same park that started this thread, since RtrezrsNHvn adopted ours there.

    Oh, well… 😕

Jim – I didn’t see another listed on the atlasquest site. I found another one in the park (closer to BakRdz’s Hornswaggled.).

and the conflicting logs on Under Cover is EXACTLY why I pulled the log book.

I think that park is ripe for letterboxes as it’s so big, but with the gc rules every corner is covered and one in the middle to stick with the .1 rule.

The animosity comes from geocahers coming across letterboxes near caches, taking the stamp and swapping in a McD toy. By and large this does not happen in the other direction because letterboxing does not involve taking stuff from boxes.

I like the stamps. I just wish I’d remember to pack paper along so I can have a stamp imprint when I stumble across them in the field!!

Are there guidelines in place for putting out a letterbox or is it all free reign? I noticed UWGB has quite a few of them (5), yet caches aren’t allowed there….just curious.

What is a cacher/letterboxer owner to do if one is on top of the other or in very close proximity? Curious minds want to know!

After joining the atlasquest site, it looks like placement is just more commonsense vs. rules to follow. They do say you should seek permission and obey municipality guidelines, but there’s no enforcing group or reviewing group to see if this happens from what I can see in the introductory info. The original letterboxing site doesn’t even reference getting permission. It tells you how to make a letterbox, but not how to properly plant one.

In the case I started with, I did email the owner and the original cacher that placed it. Neither responded so far. My sons and I went to the park again yesterday for a picnic and playground time and found the letterbox so we know where it is. I will probably go back and place the log in it now that I know where it is. Was thinking of getting a stamp done and making our own logbook to keep in our gc bag. I’ve got at least one more shot to use it at Roche A Cri …..

I have learned alot this week!

Geocachers complain that letterboxers put their boxes on top of caches. Letterboxers complain that cachers put their caches on top of boxes. Maybe it’s just that neither group really looks for other stuff out there before they use a great spot!

And yes, letterboxers think that geocachers trample the woods, can’t find their way out of a paper bag without a GPSr, and place crappy caches every .1 mile, and steal stamps from letterboxes they find thinking that they are swag. The last one is unfortunately true.

One of the favorite things that some letterboxers like to do when they come across a geocache is to turn it into an unoffical letterbox by using a random piece of swag in the cache, inking it up, and stamping their book with it. I, of course, have never done this, although I hear that Hot Wheels tires make pretty cool stamp impressions when rolled across a page.

so the crafty side of me thinks this is cool, the mom in me would be pretty ticked if my 4 yr old had inky fingers from it……

in reply to: Travelling log book/letterbox #1951866

So another example of how God reveals things in his own infinitely wise way… the atlasquest site helped me learn that there is a letterbox within the park I’m talking about. It’s not listed on LBNa (or I did not see it last night), but it comes up on Atlasquest. I’m doing a treasure hunt in that park with Scouts next week and probably would have had one stumble on it….

    Thanks for the help!
