We just did some of your caches recently and it would be a shame to loose your talents, but I completely understand. The caches one places are a like a piece of artwork crafted and are a reflection of how your mind works and a reflection of your talents.
As a new cacher, we were blessed to meet up with the Sandlanders and a group of other cachers that really shared some of the “etiquette” of the sport. I learned a lot here as well by being in the forums. If you don’t have that experience, it’s almost glamorized as being a good thing to be short with your logs or give the alphabet soup response of TFTC or TN/LN/SL…..
I think new cachers should really be mentored about the whole trackable/discovery process too. I have a feeling trackables are taken from caches and are considered just another piece of SWAG… and are then lost.
I think it would be a shame, but understand where you are coming from.

I was talking with another cacher a couple weeks ago, and he indicated that he is no longer putting his coins out. Instead he is making a photocopy of the coin, laminating it, and placing that out. I understand that the coins are expensive, and it sucks when they go missing, but this just doesn’t seem right to me. What does everyone think of this?
if you think of it as just a trackable, isn’t it just like a travel bug that could be any old toy… just this happens to be a laminated copy of a coin. The flat jack series has you finding a laminated FJ, and his # is on it, but you can’t “discover” him unless you “meet” the original that travels with BakRdz.
I think the laminated coin does lessen the fun for the finder, but I can totally understand the issue. RT10 has all of our geocoins in his room mounted on a piece of wood that we got while at the picnic. If he catches me or Mr. RT touching it he has a fit.
A paid membership is only required if you want to run queries or find some caches that are “premium only.” Premium only are typically on private property or a business that has given permission.
You would need to log in to the site (register), but you don’t have to pay unless you want a premium acct. You can search your area without paying.
Welcome to the sport. It is a lot of fun and very family friendly. It’s a great way to get out and see areas of your own community that you wouldn’t normally see!

Yup, I’d love to!
Well RT10 would LOVE that! RT3 (will be RT4 by then) just loves everyone, so he’d tag along and talk your ear off!
I view it similar to Mrs. S. We have a gas budget (we budget every dollar and yes, some is budgeted for entertainment so geocaching falls in that.) That’s a variable budget item though and if we have to choose between food and gas for work/school vs gas for geocaching, food and the livelihood come first.
Not everyone manages their money that way. We have one fixed income and need to do it that way. That doesn’t make it right or wrong, just the way we need to do it.
I understand Todd’s original post concern as I plan my daily routine based on gas lately. My kids go to school across town, so I stay on that side of town to avoid the gas back and forth. This morning I spent an hr at one school and another hour at the other. If the weather had been less sloppy, I probably would have picked up some smileys that I loaded last week for that side of town. For geocaching, we plan our caches based on proximity to one another.
I will say to Zuma’s point though, in Oshkosh, I’m already seeing a need to expand our area as we’ve found the majority of the traditionals. I’m the only one that really likes puzzles or multis, so I have to solve them and then work them into a route when we go. I have our sights on a series here in Oshkosh that takes us all over town before you can find the final and I am figuring in the price of gas to see how we can get it done.
I do believe overall that it is an inexpensive family oriented sport. It is getting more expensive for us though as the price of gas rises and we will have to do it strategically if that price goes up too much. (one change for us might even be to take the car vs the van because of better gas mileage.)
It really is a matter of you perspective I believe. When we were a two income family, this would have been a non-issue (which saddens me to think of all the $ we blew!)

Here’s a pic I took off our deck at 6:40 pm tonight. We live about 4 miles east of Hartman Creek State Park. There’s snow on the ground again now!
cYa, Grandpa

hmmmm, wondering if we’ll all fit on that deck in a month… looks mighty inviting and the snow will surely be melted off of that part 😀
I can hear us all yelling now “Gram and Gramps are cooking Johnsonville brats….!”

We were out scouting cache locations at Hartman Creek yesterday. There should be quite a few more caches to look for there in another month. Run your PQ again closer to the campout date.
so just out of curiousity – is there still snow on the ground at HC? Praying for a blast of sunshine and heat after the next few days passover! ugh! (We went on 4/2 and it was knee deep in some places and camp sites were inaccessible. Wondering what it looks like now 2 wks later.)
Amazing! Congratulations!
Congratulations!
wow – 500th puzzle cache ~ that’s a lot of solutions! way to go!
Wow – looks like a fun “adventure!” Congratulations!

A group of us retired school teachers had a blast doing some caching in the U.P. this week. I hope everyone welcomes Mimi as she completed her first milestone at GC1610Y One Cache To Aggravate Logic 2.0 It’s still my opinion that the first 100 are the most fun 😀
I concur – congratulations!
i’ve watched my stepfather get taken by woot one too many times… one time that included dog runs that my 9lb dog “broke” within minutes of the first use.
Way to go! We’re trying to get there sometime in the near future. Keep on paving the way. Our sights are on 200 next and we’ve already picked the spot!
Glad your day off proved to be successful 🙂 Congratulations!
