Couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. Anyone who meets Tom will agree that he’s one of the best PEOPLE in the game. Good work, Tom!

Funny you mention this topic, T&B. The polish cutie and I JUST qualified for the Badger State Challenge, and are now 1 page*** away from finishing the original Delorme, which I consider the Holy Grail of WI challenges. Many of our spring and summer trips in the state have been a great way to really see our state and explore many of the natural features that it has to offer. It’s also been a great way for us to bond, through the good and bad mind you.

I can’t imagine my disappointment level if the challenge was actually archived. I mean…I’ve probably been seriously working on this challenge since the spring of 2010. I know, you’re thinking, “If he was ACTUALLY working at it, he would have finished a year or 2 ago.” Well, it was after a conversation with Team Honneybunnies, that I decided that I was going to do it RIGHT and not just make 2-3 huge roadtrips finding all the easiest, quickest caches I could. (not that I didn’t find any quick, easy caches while I’ve been working) Instead, we’ve tried to slow it down and find some of the BEST caches we could in some of the coolest spots we could.

Caches like the original Delorme are what really keep me going. Just my 2 cents.

***If not for my blunder on one of our trips, we would have finished the Delorme this trip…and at Timm’s Hill at that.

I’ve been there quite a few times, but never driven. Oddly enough, both of my sets of grandparents drove it…twice!

I could give some tips on what to do once you get there, but not much on the way up.

in reply to: Why do you cache? Philosophical discussion #1968750

    Why do I cache?

    -The thrill of the hunt.

-To get out of the house to enjoy an activity with friends

-To see places I haven’t seen

-To familiarize myself with my surroundings…I’ve always been a little bit of a navigational nut.

-It helps when planning inexpensive vacations

    -Exercise

    -Bonding with my wife

-Caches make for a great stop-and-rest destination while on the way to many of the great local wineries and breweries in this fine state. 8)

-To find new places to dispose of bodies 😆

The tug-o-war should be across the gorge that separates the the park! Loser takes a swim. 😆

Ok, not really…let’s be safe people. It’s funny to imagine, though.

I’m willing, but I lack water craft. However, I could also do weekdays. Shoot me an email.

Anything in Petrifying Springs Park is good, also:

    GC15578- Half Hook
    GC11CRG- Fish Hook
    GC33QMN-Itsy Bitsy

Those are all down by the lake.

If you go, plan on going no earlier than the beginning of July. I was there on my birthday (June 24th) 3 years ago and they didn’t have the pass cleared to drive all the way through the park…so we missed about 1/2 the park. They were on schedule to have the pass cleared a few days after we left MT. That was a real BUMMER.

#3 makes a lot of sense. I get the other 2, but I’m indifferent about them.

    4. Be OPEN and REALISTIC about your son/daughter’s ability.

Now THAT’S funny!!! Rare is the parent who can be realistic about their own kid’s ability. When my son was a freshman in high school he won a wrestle-off for the starting heavyweight spot over a senior. The senior’s parents went ballistic on the coach. Coach told the parents that all their kid had to do was beat my kid. He quit. Sophomore heavyweight’s mom complained to the coach that her son should get the spot after the senior quit. Coach told her all her kid had to do was beat my kid. He quit. Lesson? If you don’t get what you want, quit.

Maybe try to appear unapproachable? 😆 I must come about that naturally or something. I haven’t had many issues with parents. In the couple confrontations I’ve had I must appear too dense to argue with.

I always make it a point to have a meeting prior to the season to lay our ground rules. A few of the most important are:

    1. No parent meetings until I have a kid meeting. Sometimes the “kid’s” concern is really a mom or dad concern which need to be handled differently.

    2. After the kid meeting we can have a parent meeting if the parent wants to have one, but the kid does the majority of the talking. This helps clear things up because a kid might leave things out when only the parent is around. (What we have here is a failure to communicate)

    3. Meetings are only about “your” kids. I don’t talk about anyone else’s kids without them present.

    4. Be OPEN and REALISTIC about your son/daughter’s ability. Not everyone can be a star all of the time or even some of the time…otherwise everything would be boring. They can work and improve…which teaches valuable life lessons.

This is only a start, but you get the idea.
