Congratulations Roger and Marie. 10K, now that’s a lot of caches. Glad that we were along for a few of the adventures.

Nice job! It looks like you had some fun.

I’ve also heard that some groups don’t stop to sign the log on P&G caches. They drive by and if they can see it visually they call it “Found” and continue on. This is usually done on classic signpost caches where a visual is easy or a quick touch/go (skipping the time to open/sign/return) also works.

There is a group here in Appleton that do drive-bys when they are on a numbers run, which I disagree with. Signing the log is an integral part of caching.

There is also a team here that seem to have more “forgot a pen” logs than they have found with a pen.

I have only had to question a handful of people about a find, but they gave sufficient information about the hide that I was satisfied that they were there.

I have only deleted one log to date, and only because it was a scathing tirade about another cacher. I thought that it was an odd chioce of forum.

If the log is unsignable (wet or disintegrating) we may toss in a new one if we have one on hand, and we may pull the old log if there isn’t room for both he old and new log. We also notify the CO in our log. Does pulling the old log hose up the information for the CO?

We should take a page (or picture) out of hack’s book and send the CO a picture.

As gotta run said, once you get your core warm, your hands stay warm (except when you are digging in the snow and ice).

I use some wool fingerless gloves. The Mrs uses a muff ( a tube that goes around your waist and you put both hands in from each end). You can put a hand warmer in it if you want to. A muff would prove problematic for the driver though.

It is not very stylish for the ladies, and it was also difficult finding one for her that was not cammo or blaze orange, but it keeps her hands warm and if she is warm and happy…

The comment of “above the snow line”. How high is the snow line?
    😕

To clarify, I meant above the average snowfall line. That does become problematic though. Appleton might be 40 inches, while Superior is 100 inches.

Then, as someone else suggested, you have to worry about them getting plowed in. Your cache might be good this year, but next year they get a new plow guy who pushes the snow to a different spot, covering your hiding spot

Suffice it to say that the “available in winter” attribute is useless in its present form, unless ALL hiders make an effort to place caches off of the ground where it can be reasonably expected that they will not get covered with snow during an average winter. Obviously if you get a huge storm, all bets are off.

By the way, my original posting comments weren’t a complaint, just an observation that warranted discussion.

If you want to leave a message on the geocaching forum in Connecticut go to the Connecticut Caching Community forum. There is a thread already started under the Rants and Raves section. You will have to create a log-in account.

Keep in mind that 78.6% of all statistics are made up in the spur of the moment (more or less).

That’s true Jim, but remember that we found out at election time that only three quarters of the people make up 75% of the population.

As for challenges, we had no interest in them at all. Never did a single one. Maybe we missed out on something, maybe not.

Regular geocaching is enough for us.

if a trackable is marked missing, that doesn’t mean it is dead and gone. If it is found somewhere and logged, it will continue its journey.

Interesting, I didn’t realize it was that easy. I had actually considered taking a road trip to scour the grounds and the cache area (for about 5 seconds). This trip would also involve a swing into Ohio to track down the individual who is sitting on another one of my trackables… 👿

Here is a March 2010 log from WiHibiscus on a TB she found that was missing 5 years. It was named Sole Survivor.

“Sole Survivor. What an appropriate name for a TB that has returned from the dead after being MIA since 2005! My sister and I were dog caching with Mya and Bela on the Wiowash trail. Most of the snow is gone although there was one area along the trail where I was surprized to see the snow hadn’t melted. We were searching for a nearby cache (the replacement for Mike’s Choice) and found this container in an area that most of the year would be tall grass and other vegetation. The container looked like trash which I suppose is the reason most people ignore it. The TB is in bad shape. Lots of rust and the chain has pretty much disintegrated. I will do what I can to clean it up and get it out in the world again.”

She fixed it up and it is back in circulation. So you never know when they may turn up again

Great milestone Walkingadventure. Glad we were with you for some of the finds. It seems like only a thousand caches ago, you were at 4K.

    The way I see it, the Myan calendar ends for one of 4 reasons;

Reason #1. The Master calendar maker died before he could finish teaching his apprentice calendar maker (Julian) how to do it. Julian wasn’t as good, and now we add an extra day every 4 years to compensate.

Reason #2. The calendar maker didn’t get the raise he was promised and said “I’m outta here”.

Reason #3. Making calendars as a hobby, he stopped and said “heck, it goes out 4000 years, that’s enough”

Reason #4. Most likely, he was working in the basement for years on his hobby and the Mrs stormed down the stone steps one day and said “It”s me or that darn useless calendar thingy, choose now”. He sadly put it out in the garage, unfinished , where it was found on the shelf collecting dust 3,800 years later.
