So there is not a fee this year? Is the race open toĀ only WGA members? And, one person is welcome to enter any amount of TBs in the race as they wish?

Did you read the contest rules on ā€œRequesting a Halo Top Trackableā€? The last line in that section reads: Once an entrant who received a Halo Top Trackable has taken a Photograph (defined below), as provided below, the entrant must place the Halo Top Trackable in a geocache for others to find. When you requested the trackable, you also agreed to release the trackable within (if memory serves) 2 weeks of receiving it.
Hmmm…nope, didn’t see that portion of the rules. I wonder how many others will miss it? Thanks for bringing it to my attention. So my guess is, after the game’s end (July 3rd), these little guys are fair game for HamFam to come and swipe? šŸ™‚

Where do you find the newsletter?

Here are a couple of links that will, first, introduce you to the robot and, second, explain the mission that these little fellows will be on.

Win a Halo Top Robot trackable and take your taste buds on an adventure!

You won’t be stealing mine from any nearby geocache, because I won’t be releasing it. šŸ˜‰ As I read it, a cacher is supposed to take pictures with the tag on caching adventures, and use one of two hashtags when submitting to social media in order to be entered for a chance to win prizes. So, you could win POTM and a prize from Halo Top Creamery all from one photo!

Did you look at the center tab on the home page? In the info center you can find “stash notes”. The larger 2 options do not have a log sheet attached, but the micro version does. Hope this was helpful.

Being prepared for the eventual change would be good. 1st step is setting up a State-wide PQ. I’ve wanted to start this for years but never figured out the right way beyond trial and error.

I’ve been getting my toes wet with the GSAK software lately. I have been able compile lists geographically with the rectangle or circle option. Is there a good way to better define boundaries? Being able to setup up boundaries such as state lines, county lines, or quadrants (like Jim mentioned) would be fantastic. It would be nice to learn from someone who has considerable experience with it.

When I started playing the LCG years ago, the cut-off for lonelies was usually about 8 months. I haven’t played much the last two years because there just aren’t a lot of lonelies in my part of the state, and the ones that there are I either have already found, or they are mine. I think that there are a number of factors that have impacted the LCG. One is that there are simply more caches than there were 10 years ago. More caches = more lonelies. I don’t know if expanding the size of the list would help or not. I see that a lot of the lonely caches are puzzles. Maybe the answer is to take puzzles off the list. That wouldn’t bother me, since I am not good at solving puzzles. Maybe we need to look at the bonus points. Maybe we should raise the cut-off for double points to 3 years and 4 years for triple points. Or maybe we give double points to the oldest 25% and triple points to the oldest 10%. I don’t know what the answer is, but I am glad that we are discussing it.

There are certainly more factors than the couple I had mentioned. Like you stated, many veteran cachers have found most of the caches that go lonely and do not revisit. But with that said, there may also be some easier to get to caches that go lonely in say 6 months, that those that now have mobility issues would enjoy getting some points for. I think my main point was; “lonely cache” needs a definition and if a cache is lonely by definition it should be included in the game for points. You stated that when you originally started the magic number was closer to 8 months not found. I think this is a way better number to define a lonely cache and it might open the door to more people playing the game. AND more COs maintaining their caches šŸ˜‰

Some trends I see with the game:

Number of participants on decline- nearly 3 times the participants in 2009 compared to 2017 (90-31)

Scores decreasing- one participant in 2010 had nearly as many points as the entire list for 2017

Latest “found” on list is getting further out- LCG from 01/2018-02/2018, most recent “found” was June 13, 2015 compared with LCG list 03/2018-04/2018, most recent “found” is July 5, 2015

To me, this means there needs to be some sort of update/s made to the game. My proposal would be to open the game up to more lonely caches statewide. The current number of 500 on the list only allows a jump of 3 weeks to caches on the list, when the time period for game play is represented by two months. This makes the LCG list more difficult to play for an ever aging group of players (not a good combination).

So, what should happen? Instead of a fixed number of 500 caches in each 2 month period, it should be decided what “Lonely” actually means. Is it a cache that hasn’t been found for 6 months or a year? If so, it should be on the list and playable for game points. The data I see, goes back to 2008. I cannot imagine that the 70-90 participants in the game in the early years were all searching for lonely caches that dated back at least 2.5 years.

The way the current list is there really is no need for bonus points. All of the caches have not been found for over 2.5 years and if the trend continues that number will grow to over 3 years.

Yes, I enjoy the difficulty the game can provide either in the find location or the puzzle solve, but why not open the game up for the enjoyment of those that cannot hike a mile through rough terrain? Or do not wish to spend hours in front of the computer trying to solve a difficult puzzle in order to get to a location for a cache that could very well have gone missing over a 3 year period? If we can get more member involvement in the LCG, maybe we can get more involvement organization wide.

in reply to: What would you do in this scenerio: #2058319

Definitely would not be dropping the TBs anywhere near this area. I would check on the cache later when the park’s people are gone. If the cache is then gone; contact the owner. If no response/action after a month or so, put in an NA.

Thank you for the information Merc. A very nice video showing the public what the sport is about. Job well done šŸ™‚

in reply to: 2018 Spring Campout #2057973

So the group site has been reserved by the WGA with primitive camping? We pay a certain amount to someone with the WGA to stay on the group site? If we would prefer to have a site with more modern amenities then we make our own reservations? Pretty sure I understand now. Thank you Jim

in reply to: 2018 Spring Campout #2057970

Yeah, I’m a bit confused by the information provided here. The first post mentions group site “C” being reserved, but other members have mentioned reserving sites of their own. So, if we are going to stay, do we need to make our own reservations?

in reply to: 2018 BOD Meeting Topics #2057716

If you have comments, suggestions, ideas or anything else you would like the new board to discuss, please post here.

Just a couple things off the top of my head. Maybe they’ve been beat to death in the past:

How to appeal to and retain new members (marketing, education, etc.)

WGA member games- rule changes, improvements, new game suggestions, kids games

website improvement, mobile device improvements, WGA app

I believe hack 1of2 has provided some excellent examples for discussion going forward.

I am unsureĀ how to read the post from Jim. I believe he brings up a good point that the website could use improvements, but there also is more of a movement today for users to get instantaneous results through social media and mobile apps. More and more people are simply not sitting in front of their computers to go online, because they carry that ability around with them all day long in their pockets. As far as your opinion about “coasting” goes; the nominees that I see here up for election I would not consider “coasters”. I believe that every one of us understands what the term length is, and when it comes time to turn things over to the next group coming in, we will do so with a smooth handoff. If my answer is off base, because I read something into your post that wasn’t intended, please feel free to reply.

in reply to: Candidate Question- storage of assets #2057602

I don’t have much extra room to park a storage trailer. If I were to say yes, it would be an over nighter at most. What is the size and weight of the trailer?

in reply to: Candidate Question – Travel #2057601

Well, as some of you know, I have 4 children that are busy with activities much of the year. Winter into early spring is usually the busiest with such activities. In 2017, I made it a point to attend events when I could and that is my intention going forward.
