I wouldn’t turn away help unless all necessary volunteer spots are filled. Finding enough volunteers to run events and normal everyday operations of an organization can be a challenge.
If volunteers are needed and someone offers their help, make them aware of the areas in which help is needed and ask them what their best fit would be. If volunteer spots are full, politely inform them of that and let them know that they will go to the top of your volunteer list for the next event.
This sounds like a question on one of those 500 question psychological exams that are given to people before they are allowed to work at a nuclear power plant. At this time, I am not aware of any spirit animal in my presence, but when it happens you’ll be the first to know. LOL
Sitting at 343 found and 17 owned caches. A little of each. Besides finding quality caches, I enjoy hiding quality caches. So most are a bit more than a bison tube hidden along side the road for a quick grab and go.
I have been geocaching since May 2015 and a WGA member since mid 2017. I have just attended one WGA event; the 2017 WGA Fall Geo Picnic
I believe that our sport is definitely still family friendly, but maybe that’s just because we only have 340 hides and have thousands more within a small enough radius which can be enjoyed by the whole family together.
It is my opinion, that one of the biggest turnoffs to newbies is coming across poorly maintained caches. Who really wants to open a container that releases a noxious odor when opened and all contents are moldy? Or they get to GZ and all that is left is a wire dangling from a tree, multiple DNFs, NMs and no response from the CO?
To me, this is what needs to be fixed to regain some interest from newbie searchers and those of us that would love to provide quality hides in areas that are tied up with caches that may/may not exist anymore.
My favorite cache has to be Tributary|Adventuring Walk. The wife and I just finished this one up on Thanksgiving morning, after contemplating the best time, and mode of arrival at GZ for about a year and a half. The walk along the Fox River in Appleton took us to areas we had never seen up close. The journey also took us across places that my wife would never have mustered up enough courage to get across without being on a geocaching adventure. That’s really what the sport is about for me; taking me to cool places and gaining great experiences with my spouse and kiddos!
Currently, my focus is on the LCG. Most of the lonely caches can take you on a journey. There also just seems to be something special about a cache container that hasn’t been touched by visiting hands for a few years and is still in great shape. There are also a good number of lonely caches that are puzzles, and of course this a great season to solve some of those while waiting out the deep freeze.
A willingness to look at all sides of an issue, before coming to a conclusion. Not rushing to decisions, but first giving them some thought. These are strengths of mine and they really have been gained by my experiences representing other organizations. Along with those, I realize that there most certainly will always be someone on the other side of that fence and I can except an outcome no matter where my heart lies.
My experience in the world of geocaching is no where near most of the members of this organization, but I do have a good have a good amount of experience serving on other BODs. I’ve served on the local wrestling club BOD for 13+ years, the high school’s football club BOD for 2+ years, and coached youth baseball and football for numerous seasons. At some point or another, within the organizations I have served as VP, Secretary and equipment manager.
In recent years I have scaled back my involvement within these groups. I have devoted a considerable amount of time over the years to activities which my children are in. Even though I plan on being a voice in their activities also, I have decided to switch more of my focus to my hobbies and interests.
Why can members not post to the Facebook page? I have a page set up for our wrestling club in which members are allowed to make posts. They can make text posts, even post pictures and videos. It is an excellent communication tool that allows many to see the successes of others. The can be an inspiration to some that might not have had the determination otherwise.
I would say that as a BOD member, there is a need to be social while attending events (no matter what type of event it is). Listening and communicating with those in attendance provides a window to their thoughts and helps to move the organization along.
The responsibilities to WGA events will definitely be more involved. The planning of these events will start months in advance and will require commitment from much of the BOD. It is also important at these events to “sell” the organization and the benefits it brings to our state and communities.
The proposed amendment looks good to me. Addressing how to proceed with officer vacancies is a good addition, since it is not part of the current bylaws. Thanks for putting this together.
