Congrats on the 1.5K at the WWFM event! Lots of milestones at the event or for the day. Good to be there to see some of them!
Congrats, Mike! No deja vu at that one? Nothing ventured… 😯 Maybe it will be another $50 bill on the next one, milestone or not. 😉
Congrats on that torrid pace to the half a K and the first hide! May there be many more!
Congrats on the milestone! Hope to see that view too!
Congrats on the .6K!
Thanks for the nods on this surprising number. We, as a family, have had a preference for scenic and traditional caches, but many of the “puzzle’ caches we have done have been some of the best experiences, and more memorable because of some aspect of the puzzle, or something we learned. Not always, as there have been some I wouldn’t do if I knew what I was getting into, nor are all of them based on topics that really grabbed me, or Dan, or Jackie. Kind of force-fed sometimes with nearly one-fifth of our finds being puzzles, likely more than that near home. We don’t even try to do them all any more, having happily come to terms with not needing to do all the caches in the neighborhood.
As for the great puzzle controversy, that freedom to choose to do the caches we want to, or not to do them, is the key. We no longer feel compelled to do all the caches in town, puzzle or traditional, and with a more “relaxed”? picking and choosing approach hope to continue to have as much fun as we have had the past couple years.
For those interested in some of the best of the best for puzzles around the Fox Valley and beyond to add some enrichment to traditional and other cache hunts, seldom|seen’s link in this thread provides a great source of several cachers’ perspectives and experiences with these beasts, including some comments on those that might be more of an investment in time that some would want to make. A lot of fun had by all!
We have three caches on Rock Island, north of Washington Island off the tip of Door County. Being proud owners of 55 caches, with none yet archived, we are pretty careful about our hides and take the time to do regular cache maintenance to keep them in great shape.
Going to Rock Island on a routine basis for maintenance is pretty unrealistic, so we made some contingency plans with a couple of our hides up there, even though the park ranger is an informal trailman. Back-ups. Yes, second hides close enough to the original to avoid proximity conflicts, but far enough away not to be found accidentally.
“Fire In The Sky” was one of those hides with a built-in safety net in case the original somehow disappeared. It was in a cedar post hole in the top of Chester Thordarson’s old garden wall. The staff at Rock Island knew that some “tuckpointing” was going to take place on the wall, and had mentioned that to us when we were there a few months before, but they didn’t think the work would extend as far as our cache. Early in January, I got an e-mail from Ranger Randy:
“Rock Island update. Work has been done on the rock wall and unfortunately a cache has been permanently sealed into it. Was Fire In The Sky in a hole in the rock wall? If so you’ll want to make it inactive. Sorry, I was on vacation when the mason started the tuckpoint job or I would have removed the cache.”
Ranger Randy
No problem. I have back-ups ready to go up there, right? Murphy’s law strikes again. The back-up was in another old cedar post hole sixty feet away. Two caches entombed for posterity on our favorite island!
That is indeed unreal! I was so exhausted reading your logs, it took me a day to recover enough to comment. I guess that means I won’t sign up for the next run like that, tempting as it sounds. Congrats to all of you!
Well done! 5K is indeed a lot of caching. Warm congrats!
Congrats on joining an elite group for the year!
Congrats on the milestone! Nice choice and great day for it! Get ’em while they last! Hope to get there soon to see that series as well.
Nice photo of the team at the milestone choice. We remember well being at that very spot. Congrats on the milestone, and welcome back to selzzup! 😉
Congrats on the 1.5K Pete! And thanks for saving me the time on the milestone post, Jim. I was sleeping while others were commenting, finally after 24 hours up and a trip to a night cache. I had planned a “NOTHING Delays Labrat’s 1.5K” post, being the recipient of the PAF during the entertaining search, at least for me, listening to the sound effects at the other end of the line! 😯 Congrats again on the workout; wow! 😉
Congrats on the 2K! Great area to log a milestone!
We like the dells! 8)
