I, too, agree with the sentiments expressed on the most necessary element of visiting cemeteries, whether as a geocacher or otherwise, and that is the need for proper respect and appropriate conduct. My wife and I were frequent cemtery visitors long before geocaching, both while traveling and at the cemeteries our ancestors were laid to rest in. We have shared many moments of reflection during these visits.
The same can be said of our visits, mostly mine, to cemeteries that have geocaches. I remember clearly the grave of a couple near a well in a Calumet County cemetery where I visited to note a birth year and found that the woman buried there died the same year as my mother, and that her husband was born the same year as my father. The drive to the next cache that day, over a year ago, was filled with reflection over that poignant opportunity to remember my parents once again on that beautiful fall day.
We have placed some cemetery caches, with the approval of family, that ask others to say hello to Bampa Bill (my wife’s grandfather) when they visit his grave, or to stop and see Anna, her great-grandmother, who no one else had visted besides us for many years. We are heart-warmed at the thought of new visitors briefly stopping, and perhaps in some cases, taking the time to think of more than just their names and the dates of their birth and death.
As long as people remember where they are and give the utmost respect to others who are there for the more important reason, to remember their loved ones or ancestors, there shouldn’t be an issue with strangers visiting or admiring a grave site. There is much to learn and reflect upon while doing so.
Congrats again, Gwyn and Dick! I knew this was coming, even faster than I thought after looking at your 1K milestone date recently. Your year has been one for the record books. Wow!
Congrats, Alex! Way to go in the home stretch before your lay-off!
Big CONGRATS, Ralph! Keep working on that sponsorship angle. I see a line forming in front of and behind me already!
I had thought there was an intent to put the Cache Rescue list into the LCG and there were some listed previously. There are a lot of completed missions and the one local Appleton area one is on my radar. Will be checking the location (a previous find) in a day or two, LCG or not.
Congrats on the 1K! First saw your identity show up in the LCG and then saw it several more times finding some of those caches up in your area. Well done!
Congrats on the 1K milestone!
Congrats on the milestone and the cache choice, and the lucky day at the ball park to go with it! Hope to meet you over here in the Fox Valley where you might get your next milestone in a day as some others have done over here. Again, congrats!
Hearty Congrats! Glad to have contributed a few, and have some more waiting for you!
Thanks for the update, Jim. Great project tied in to the school curriculum. Well done!!
One of our formerly missing ones has been circulating in New Zealand for a while now and another “not missing” one (TBN3KR) has had some good treatment in the hands of Hives, a Minnesota cacher who has been giving it a good tour of the western mountains during his travels and sending some photos as he goes: IMG_4010.JPG (1035.7 KB).
It’s good to see and share some of the success stories for these travelers.
Hi Jim,
Will help again this year and get some to the safest hands and caches possible. If you have time, give us an update on some of the high points of travels, especially for those that wanted to cross oceans and go some distance.
Well, I did o.k. on that today when my phone battery went dead, and I haven’t heard from Alex since yesterday morning. Think of it as a conservation effort. How about you?
After Marc wipes his tears away he will help me compose answers to any puzzle questions. I bet that will drive up the number of contacts I get right away while I too slow the pace a bit in a week or two, or so…. sometime after that #100 anyway. See you along the way, Alex, will keep the phone calls to a minimum, now if you can do the same…
Yet another Wisconsin 1K, however far away! Sounds like a great trip. Enjoy and Congrats!
