Congrats on the streak, Gwyn and Dick! And on ending it! I remember how tough it got for me when I was running out of caches in the Fox Valley after trying to hold off on some to keep the streak alive. I’d burn one to get the daily find and then an FTF opportunity would come up in a couple hours. Decisions, decisions. Though some of my closest friends were almost teary-eyed when I finally called it a day last August, I got more congrats for finally giving it up and getting back to a normal life. Now I only have the weekly lonely cache fix to worry about. lol! Congrats again, as that streak had me eating your dust on the Grand High Pobah board for the first time since I looked at it. Well done!

Well done, Dave! And many thanks for all the other contributions you have made to geoacaching and all the rest of us having fun!

With that new ‘do you’re sporting, your lucky to get leftovers! Just kidding, it’s really a cool earthy look. I don’t think bro-in-law has sent his address in yet, matter-of-fact I know he already had two 2007 WGA coins and recently acquired a third as an FTF prize, so maybe he will go for the mystery coin, being so flush with recent WGA ones…

Congrats to both of you for the tie for April, and the good sportsmanship, Alex!

Rent-a-leg was a short-lived and definitely non-profit side-line that now appears to be going out of business unless we find another 4 or 5 terrain cache that just has to get logged in the next few days. Congrats, Mike, and good luck working those caching trips up to full days in the near future!

Congrats, Jim! That 1K could have happened some time ago, but you kept your priorities in order. Perseverance finally paid off. Good to see all of you back on the trail and adding to the count again. Well done!

Here’s hoping Lisa survives the hot sun on her southern swing across several states and notches that 800 soon. Last I heard the count was at about 777 and climbing. Good luck on the milestone, and stay out of those Louisiana bayous so you can make it safely back to Wisconsin!

    PCFrog,

Hate to see the loss of those caches and urge you to reconsider. It sounds like you take pride in your caches and others who have done some of them have expressed support for keeping them. I haven’t yet been over that way to do any, but my brother-in-law labrat_wr has. He and zuma! have both encouraged you to keep them up. So do I, based on their opinion. Sometimes it’s best to take these forum threads with a grain of salt. Just my two cents.

My wife and I both enjoy visiting cemeteries, especially old ones, or the ones our ancestors are buried in to do some primping or planting. Sometimes we stop to recite the names or messages left on old stones, perhaps years after anyone else is left to visit, and we reflect on those lives and times. We both sometimes see fallen or damaged markers, some in corners of less well-kept cemeteries, myself more often, as I do visit many while geocaching.

In some ways, these visits remind me to live well in the here and now, as thereafter is kind of a mysterious conjecture. With a little luck, we can leave behind some who care enough to pay homage to our memory and take care of our final “resting” place for a while. After that, except for historical and family records and photos, and memories of our descendants, time conquers all and earth reclaims most things.

So, when I visit these places, I sometimes only utter a reflective comment on the names or dates, or I may be moved to say more or to share my visit with someone later, but having been there and noticed is more than I expect from other than my loved ones, and, to me, the visit was then worth while.

And a lot of us thought we were going to catch up a bit. Oh well, there goes that thought. Kind of nice to take a break and let new caches pop up all over the place isn’t it?! Look forward to your return to all the new ones nearby and seeing you both then!

in reply to: Lonely Cache Game – Congratulations to ……? #1886982

I’ve found almost all of the lonely caches I’ve attempted to be challenging, particularly in the winter. Many have been memorable in some way with the ante upped by the game and curiosity about why they happened to become lonely. There have been a few lame ones, most of those now archived. Some needed attention and got it, with the owner’s assistance and/or gratitude. I’m still looking forward to the ones I tried and haven’t been able to find due to winter conditions along with a long list of others that are out past the sixty mile radius I’ve been operating in. I just wish I had much more time, an unlimited budget, and perhaps a helicopter. Remote locations are a common denominator I’ve noticed with many – it will soon be bug heaven at most of those, so now is prime time to do some chasing.

Not want I want to hear either! You’ve probably read about brother-in-law labrat_wr taking part of the blame for gettng Sagasu hooked on this game last year. That included getting Lyme disease from a deer tick while doing one of his Wild Rose caches last summer. Well, credit where credit is due…. It’s good to check for them as Lyme can be a real pain with a smorgasboard of symptoms.

Hats off to both of you for catching the fever the past several months! It was indeed a pleasure to watch you tackle some of those gnarly area puzzle caches, start knocking down your first several FTFs, and become state-wide contenders in the Lonely Cache Game, all in a short period of time. Add to that a whole bunch of extremely well-done caches of your own, with a Cache-of-the-Month winner, and you have definitely helped raise the bar and put Winneconne on the map. Congrats to both of you!

I remember driving by the Badger Army Ammunition Plant when I was near Portage, but they allow hunting there now. Don’t know about geocaches though. Some small town areas have places with potential security issues.

And then there are always exceptions or special cases, like the culvert at the Neenah Slough on the south side of Neenah. That is apparently a bridge per the D.O.T. (per reviewers), though it has a guard rail on both sides on posts embedded in terra firma that is mowed on one side and hosts shrubs the entire length on the other side. That one still has me puzzled, but the ruling was a bridge in that case so the nano had to go elsewhere.

Too funny! We saw one of the same sandals when we did “Grand Chute’s Wild Side” last spring for a milestone! We used the high spots nearby off the path to skip around through that area. Among my all time favorites is, of course, “Nifty Fifty” by seldom|seen (GC1187E). It’s no secret any longer that this one is out quite a distance on Lake Winnebago, but just where is the question. When rsplash40 and I got the FTF last summer, he went over the edge of the boat in his diving gear and his arm hit the tether for the float suspended above the container in two seconds! What a lucky mark on a 5/5 cache!
