    .

LOL – – but the girl that Walgreens told me where to find bug spray at WalMart. After checking out at Walgreens, we headed over there and bought another $25.00 worth of bug spray, bug wipes and duct tape.

I heard multiple people say that the older caches around were all junk and needed maintenance. I was unable to get cache names from the conversations but the comments were soaked, moldy, empty and “trash”.

Not trashed – but trash, like the whole thing was more like random litter than a cache container.

That is a pretty strong statement in my opinion.

While the main attraction will be the new ones that come out, and it would be nice if everyone pitched in, the reality is they won’t. Yes it would be a significant task but I think it would be a good PR move to at least visit the old CB once in the month or so prior and clean them up.

    That IS a strong statement.

It’s funny how I’ve heard multiple people say OTHER teams say this, but nobody is willing to say it themselves or give specific examples? I’m sure there are a few caches like that out there, but I’m certain it wasn’t the majority.

As a cache owner, the only way I know something is wrong is if somebody tells me. I tried to visit as many of my caches as I could in the week leading up to the Ba$h to make sure they were in good shape, but I didn’t visit if people have been finding them all summer with no notes about any maintenance needing to be performed.

I’m sorry if other cache owners aren’t being diligent about maintaining caches. I would recommending sending that specific cache owner a note.

I too wonder which caches. While we only went after 20 of the event caches, we found 4 times that many of the older caches. I have to look back at our notes, but I think we found only one where the log was damp, otherwise the caches were in great condition considering how long some of these have been out doors.

“Mosquitoes and humidity are beyond the control of the committee” – – Perhaps if you got Mother Nature on the committee you could get this one resolved too!

All joking aside, our compliments to West Bend, this event continues to improve. We felt starting the Bash on Friday helped cut down on the cache damage we saw last year. Of the ones we hunted, short of the trampled grass, all the containers were in good shape. Also the lines were not as long or non-existent at the event caches compared to past years as well. To us, the cache frenzy was not as it was in past years.

Our compliments to the committee making the changes, you’ve set the bar pretty high for next year. Please keep up the great work.

One interesting note, is the hotels are getting smarter, as the two we called were not honoring discounts or coupons for that weekend. Even with that we still felt the room rate was reasonable.

    ES,

Can you clarify something for me… Is your City Navigator the DVD version or microsd version? If you have the chip created by Garmin, there isn’t an unlock code, you can move it to as many GPS’s as you want.

If you do have the chip version of the CN map, the upgrade may have damage the files on the chip…. If this is the case, we will be sure to pull our map chip prior to updating anything.

We use the Rayovac Hybrids and are very happy with them. I have heard the Enloops are better. I think Greyhounder uses them, you might want to contact her.

Why not talk to the DNR guys in the Northern Unit and see how they handle it. We volunteered for one up there a couple years ago. Locals and campers showed up. A ranger talked about using a compass and how to read a topo map. Then Tie did a Geo 101 class. Afterwards we taook people out and helped them find caches. I believe it was pretty well attended.

We spend most weekends during the summer near the southern unit. Depending upon the date, you can count us in to help.

in reply to: Need to Know if the WGA is interested #1931599

What defines the southern unit? Is it the one around LaGrange?

in reply to: Dropped my GPS and now it is DEAD, I think….. #1931587

One other thing to try is changing the batteries. I dropped a couple on our tile floor and it was like it wiped the charge out of them. I dont know if there is any difference with rechargeables, but that little drop did them in. Just a thought.

Actually, the easiest approach is probably to make a macro to add the attributes in a log, which can be included in the GPX download. I was looking at this this morning. Doesn’t look too tough to achieve. You could also theoretically add them to the cache description, but that would require that you lock the cache after adding to prevent reloads from erasing them.

To solve the erase issue, dump the attributes into the “Notes” of GSAK. It treats them as the very first log entry and it does not erase them when you load a new GPX file. I can still see some logistical issues with that — like when new caches are added having to regenerate the note but not duplicating them and it also means you cannot keep notes about a cache for fear of overwriting them.

Before the recent change with PQs was one able to get the attributes on an Oregon running it through GSAK first? I have to admit that having attributes is a handy thing and something I miss…

No, the Oregon did not display the attributes. But I can see where it could be easily implemented, like the many other enhancements Garmin added after it was introduced.

in reply to: Looking to buy a new GPS #1929388

You list contains all good units. I am partial to the Oregon since I own one. Which model would depend on your style of caching. In SE Wisconsin, I have not had need for a topo map, but I have downloaded free road maps of the US which work great. In addition, you can create custom maps from google earth and they have or are introducing Birdseye, which is satellite image maps. I would suggest looking at the Oregons without maps.

One side note, if you do a lot of Earthcaches, the 550 has a camera built in.

Actually the newest version of GSAK now handles attributes in the PQ files. Unfortunately, it looks like Groundspeak removed them from the PQs. Oops!

That must have just happened, my PQ’s from last week had attributes and the one I ran yesterday didnt.

in reply to: Thinking of archiving all my caches! #1929136

I am pretty sure we have found most of your caches, and you do set the bar very high on keeping them maintained. Therefore, I say scrap the house, dogs and wife and hide more caches! Just kidding. Seriously, my recomendation is find a balance. If that means archiving caches or adopting them out, then so be it. What I would hate to see is for you to burn out and stop hiding caches completely. However, what ever you decide, you have earned our respect; I know your decision is not an easy one.

Thanks for all you have hidden.

BTW we refer to Waukesha as Tappsville. [/b]
