We too did a lot of winter caching last year. Some caches just glow without any leaves to help hide them. Others will be a little more tricky. Searching for ones with winter friendly icons helped a lot.
I’d recomend you dress in layers. We open up some of the layers on the way out to the cache (and back), try not to get sweaty during the hike. Then zip up at ground zero as you search and keep your body heat in. As LB7 said, good boots are a must. The chemical hand warmers are also a plus to keep your fingers and the GPS warm. Remember to drink lots of water.
Oh yeah, I got an ice axe too. It helped free some caches from their icy prison. I think 3Hawks carries a big stick and a hammer. But I think thats just to scare off other cachers. π

I have heard if you buy the maps on the pre-programed data cards that they don’t have any unlocks, though I’ve never tested this myself. The only disadvantage is you can’t use the maps on your PC, but if you upgrade your gps or need o send it in for repairs you don’t have to deal with the whole unlocking scheme.
You are absolutley correct, we have CN2008 on an SD card and have switched it between 4 different units. The down side is you cannot upgrade it, and you dont get the maps on your PC. Since I use Google Earth it really didnt matter, we figured that the streets dont change all the much and was worth it to us for the portablility of the maps.
Just want to echo Kansas64’s comments. We did both of those caches in the summer and then went back a second time for Halloween with the kids. They really enjoyed it and would like to do more of them. Flashlights for everyone and hot chocolate are a must.
One word of caution; park outside the park if you dont want to pay the fees. The first time, several cars got ticketed by a very alert ranger.

My magellan froze up on vacation and now it won’t do anything. Does anyone have the Reset Code for the Magellan eXplorist 500?? It is a series of buttons you need to push, NOT the reset to defaults.
Never heard about a “reset” button. Oh, that’s right, I use Garmin products. π
My Garmin Legend C now has over 8K finds on it, the screen and body is all dinged up, and I have duct tape holding the rubber band on. Yet, it still works fine. Some days I do wish it would just quit, so I could justify going out and getting an Oregon, but no, it just keeps working.

LOL we just got an Oregon and have been getting familiar with it. We’ve taken it with us but have not totally relied on it for our caching as we are still learing how to navigate the screens. In addition, I have been following threads on GC forums and the OregonWiki. The 6th version of the firmware was released on Wednesday, but prior to that the reset button has been extremly poplular with users. Even with that said, there doesnt seem to be many people wanting to send them back.

As long as we are venting on this issue. My problem with my GPS (eXplorist 210…I know, but it still finds caches) is that if two or more caches have basically the same name (for example, another walk in the park 1 through 4327), then it automatically deletes all but one, because it thinks it is a duplicate.
Does anyone know how to fix this? a solution that doesn’t cost money?
On our yellow etrex, we used GC numbers to keep all of the caches straight. That is the only free solution to the problem that I can think of.
However I did spend the money and bought GSAK and use its smart name to create names for me that are unique. This has worked well. We would put the smart names in the GPS and then print a sheet in the order we wished to do the caches that would contain all the necessary information both keyed on the smartname.
Now with the Oregon, I put a number in front of the name with gives us the order to do the cache and the smart name following it albeit much longer than went we loaded use the 60CSX. Paperless and down to carrying only one device.
For its price, GSAK gives you a ton of options on how to do things. And I was one who was very content to just print PDFs of cache pages and carry them in my palm.

Well this was a great way to find out I’m no longer a premium member. Sure would have been nice to have been given the chance to stay one. I guess GC.com doesn’t need the money anymore. π―
Thats a surprise, we got emailed about 2 months ahead of time and then again a couple weeks before our expiration.
Hi Beast,
Since your writing to us from the future, who won the World Series? I see an opportunity here.
No problem, I still have one left.

Well I do believe that make one for a 60″ TV. I am sure you could wrap one of those around you to protect you from scratches. However, before I give you a code you would have to promise to post pictures of you wearing it!

Count us in for a vote for Red Rock. We are planning to hit that area in November to get some of the higher terrains for blackout.
The best 1/1 cache I have done, and actually one I think we will not forget is GCQ596 A Special Memory. Uniquely different and classy but not for anybody with commitment issues π
Yes, Robin has that one inked in. Hope to do just the cache though. π
Thanks for the info on St George as well.
You mentioned the off road caches. I was looking at some of those. I am guessing it is not a good idea to take a rental car into the desert on off pavement roads, though I will be tempted.

When we traveled to Vegas last fall, the car rental company ran out of Sebrings and offered us a brand new 4 door pickup instead. I saw it as a sign of divine intervention indicating we were meant to cache off road.
One of the days, we managed to hit the caches around the Hoover Dam and then drove into Arizona. There is a beautiful 4 lane white concrete bridge build out in the desert with no obvious purpose; since its only a cattle trail leading up to it. Another great use of tax dollars.
We continued south from there, and ended up in California and we got some caches there too. Then we bolted up north to Utah. And managed some finds up there. However, we had only a mini mag light with us and we were worried about snakes and spiders in the dark. (Yes, we had seen a taratula earlier during the day). We finally headed back south to Vegas.
I guess we would not have hit many desert caches if we had not gotten a truck, but I am sure glad we did. Ended up putting 600 miles on it in 4 days. Oh yes, while we have our UPSs’ up here (usual pile of sticks) Look for UPRs over there. Not many sticks to be found.
But most of all have a good time.
Wow, those are some interesting observations – has anyone checked the correlation between population and caches? I would think that has something to do with it. Also on a personal note, is seems like caches tend to congregate where there is water… pond, lake, really big lake. Anyone else notice this?

I’m thinking he would be better off titled Boximus Prime!
Hmmm I thought the word used was unhappy. And I think it was more in the context that the cache was removed without contacting the owner. After all a cache does belong to the hider, it should be up to them if they want to deal with the issues involving it. The best thing you can do any time you have a questions about a cache is contact the owner (i.e. broken lid, now an ant farm, found it out of place)
Since your putting it back, I would think its a done deal. After all everyone makes mistakes and your fixing yours.
If you do it again, we may have to stuff you in an ammo box. And just remember cachers always know the best places to hide a body. Just kidding π
Regarding the picnic, I would go. The cachers I know wont hold this against you. You’ll learn a lot going out with other cachers. And it will be a while before the picnic is this close Milwaukee again. I wish I was going.
Has anyone asked the ‘newbies’ to go and put it back? Seems reasonable to me. If they won’t, I’ll drive you up there Dave so you can express your unhappiness in person!
