Same here…but then I have been saying that for about 6 months now…

Of course you could wait another 6 months for the Oregon to be a viable product. I really like what I have seen of it so far.

I think more importantly, what does the cache owner indicate you should do? An ammo box with a log book in each one seems to indicate a find at each point. One log=one smiley. I’ve found caches where the cache pages say to log a waypoint as a bonus.

Remember its the owner who polices their caches, so they can delete excess logging if they decide that is what it is.

    Roger,

This cache requires that you descend on rough log stairs about 200 feet into a ravine, follow a short length of wet, rocky trail, traverse a sandy beach for about 100 yards, and then climb up a small hill (maybe a 5 foot climb at 5% grade). And yes, I did this on crutches. I will always remember making the trek, but I don’t recommend this for anyone else with a handicap.

Is that the one where you have to hop over the caution tape that is supposed to keep you off the condemned bridge which crosses the ravine your talking about? I thought the south path was some nice uneven stone steps that would have been a real treat for crutches too!

If you want to see a selection of caches plotted on a map there is a macro that will open then tranfer them to Google Earth for your viewing pleasure.

Its pretty cool, it will even transfer parking and other child coordiants to Google.

Congrats on your milestone. We knew that despite your denials you were going to hit 3000 during your vacation. Just proves your addicted.

There is no doubt that an event does not run that smoothly without a lot of effort on the organizers part. I know we are looking forward to heading up there again. I sure hope it becomes an annual event.

But the real question on our mind is: Did Pharmgirl manage to pass along her travel bug on Friday night?????

We will see; I think it will be close to Mega status…it was a great time Marc….sorry you couldn’t make it.

Not ‘couldn’t make it’. I chose not to go. I figured there would be way too many people at all the cache sites, and was not interested ……

Ya know, Marc, this was a lot different than other events I have attended. Unlike most local events, the choice to use permanent caches made the distance between the caches significant. While we did run into some people, it never felt like a parade of people lining up to sign the log. On the other hand, we ran into a lot of old friends on the way to and from caches, and met a lot of new friends as well. All and all, we had a great time and got a few finds. Doesn’t get much better than that.

Yep, I would have to second that. There was only one area that there were 5 caches in close proximity so we were able to see other cachers. And at only one of those did we actually have a group form while we hunted it. Otherwise the rest of the day we either saw cars pulling up or away as we arrive at each location. It made for a long day but an excellent time.

We get notified for the Needs Archived logs, but not the Needs Maintenance logs. I use the WGA website to see the Needs Maintenance logs as well, so I look at each of those also.

Where on the WGA do you find that list? I would definitley check that list out before planning a route of 30 caches.

Thanks for the congrats, although our kids were a little bummed as we took off each weekend this last month to find 80 caches.

What a fun way to mark a milestone! Congratulations. Are you going to tell us what you ate after logging #888 on 8-8-08?

Of course we headed off to Boulder Junction for ST8K!

Have you thought of making the GPS files available online the morning of the event so some people can skip that part when they get there?

Good question. I am not in charge of this event (just a tiny cog in a giant event organizing machine), so I don’t know if this would fly, but I will ask.

If the GPX file with the cache information was made available online, I’m sure it would be at 6:30am the day of the event (the same time GPS downloads start), and not a second earlier. Would this help you out? Because there is a raffle associated with finding the new caches, we need to make sure no one can get a “head start”.

If this were to happen you could eliminate or reduce the demand for palm and POI files. Each user could set up for their own configuration or at a minimum take the pressure off the volunteers at the start of the event.

Personally, I would load it to GSAK and push it out to all our GPS’s in the hotel room then go from there.

If not, how soon will the caches be posted on GC.com; I am sure the reviewers will be working their fingers to the bone. But a quick PQ would work too.

auto-routing seem a little more “wonky” than the 76, but I have made no direct comparison

Could you conduct side by side test to see if they handle a trip in a different manner? It would be interesting to know.

We have CN on an SD Card that we swap between both units. I have not seen a difference between the two when we auto route.

Any one versus the other work better within tree canopy?

Of the two we have they are virtually equal. Sometimes, I will take mine out of the case in a last act of desperation in hopes to get a better signal. But I cannot say either one is better than the other regarding accuracy on any given terrain.

in reply to: Pro’s & Cons of the Different Garmin Units #1892170

We have a 76CSx and a 60CSx and they are virtually the same with the exception of the form factor. If you like the bigger buttons and and larger unit, you will get used to having the buttons on top of the 76CSx. The 60CSx has the same screen is a smaller unit and smaller buttons. The only reason I have trouble with it, is I am used to the bigger buttons and not press them quite in the center.

If you narrow your selection down to those two, get your hands on the two of them and see which you like better. I know Cabelas will let you play with them in the store.

    Hi Ken,

Glad to hear all the bug bites didn’t dampen your daughters spirits. It was great watching her eyes light up when she hauled out that ammo box at the last cache. It makes showing up for the classes worth while.

Echoing what the others have said, let us know if you need help, there are quite a few from the Muskego, Hales Corners, Greendale, Franklin area and we’d be happy to lend a hand. We learned a lot by going out with other cachers, so we are more than happy to return the favor.
