Excellent article and comparison, Gwyn. I can see our caching in some of that, as I’m sure others can.
I always have believed in logging our finds for our own personal journal and as thanks to the people who hide the caches. However….
Would I be concerned about logging our finds if we couldn’t see a way to count them?
Would I be concerned about when we went caching if I couldn’t see which days we had already been out?
While we look at D/T ratings to see if we will be able to take on the rigors of certain caches, would I be concerned about going for a certain cache just because we needed to get that D/T combo?
While we fill our hides with swag when we can, do I care if we find anything when we go on the hunt?
I think we went through a lot of stages in our caching career, and we are still evolving. I’m on both sides of the fence about having our stats available. Maybe I should just not look at them. I like to count our numbers, but I don’t compare them with anybody else’s. I have a shelf of swag items we traded for on earlier caches, but lately I’ve been thinking of putting them out in some of our new hides. Maybe others will enjoy them more than the items like being covered in dust.
It could be that in 2008 we were too new to the game to pay attention to what was going on. We didn’t even put out our first hide until April of that year. We were just enjoying getting outside and finding stuff in the woods. If we hadn’t already made plans to go out on the 29th next week, I’m wondering if I would have the strength to “just say no” to the souvenir and the hole-filler for that date.
Hippies dancing around the millpond… Was it a full moon out there, too? 😉
Congrats to August and the three geomonkeys!I heard that it will be “chili” for the event at Horicon…

Oh, my! So sweet… and cute! I like the outfit, but it’s not an “official” Yellowjacket one… yet. I’m sure there is one in her future, though. 😉
If you host it, they will come.
Who says the music has to sound good?
Hiding your first cache is a big step, and it’s very rewarding to get those “Found It” logs coming in after it gets published.
Check out the information on geocaching.com about hiding a cache at http://www.geocaching.com/seek/default.aspx The form you will need to fill out is there, too. Since caches need to be a minimum of 0.1 mile (528 feet) from other physical caches, which include puzzle finals and stages of a multi-cache, there might be more of a problem in your Waukesha area than in more rural places. Hopefully, you can find a public spot that is far enough from anything else where people would enjoy visiting.
You can see where existing caches are by looking at a GC map of the area or at a list of caches near certain coordinates. However, you won’t know where those puzzle finals and multi stages are unless you have done those caches yourself. Our two reviewers in Wisconsin are WisKid and Bec. Just look for their publication log notes at the bottom of the logs on cache pages and click on their names to contact them. I’m not sure if they can give you answers beforehand or if they wait until you submit a cache to see if there is anything too close or if there are other problems with your cache.
That’s just the start of things, so if you don’t see any answers by reading something, come back here to ask again. Good luck on your first hide!
That is the cutest little baby girl, Brian.
Congratulations on being the proud papa of the newest heartbreaker!
(Congrats to the new mom, too.)Got the info today, scoped out some spots, doing more online research to clear some things up…
Can’t go tomorrow, CTQ. Looks like crappy weather the rest of the week, too.
Checked out the cache page for this one and did some preliminary research… think we have some final coords just from that, but we’re headed out shortly to visit all the WPs, plus find a cache or two in the area(s). We’ll save the final for the get-together with Chatauqua.
Sure hope you go “unplugged” for your music, Muggle B! 😉
I just looked at the cache page for “Message in a Bottle”, and I think we might go for the WPs beforehand. We can get our idea of the final location, check it with you, then meet you there on the 29th at 2:00, unless you want to go there earlier… like tomorrow???
If you’ve done everything and just want to team up on the actual find, that’s OK with us. No need for you to go everywhere all over again.
Don’t think I could drag a piano with me to a jam, but I can sing along, and I can bang out really good rhythm on/with just about anything. Someone give me a cowbell!
Each group and each cache is different. On this one, for us, since we haven’t gone for it at all, I would prefer to start from the beginning. If a waypoint is missing and you have the info, then we could use it.
Before doing this, I’ll check out the cache thoroughly, and all help will be considered, but I’d still like to see what the CO intended, if that can be replicated to some degree.
