The units the DNR bought for their properties were eTrex H yellow units. They had all sorts of diagrams and instructions (laminated) that went along with the units for check-out. We, along with Gramps, held training sessions for many of the DNR properties naturalists/activities people who gathered at Hartman Creek in June. They had hands-on time to find some practice caches hidden close by after the instructional time.
I think the units at Roche-A-Cri and Buckhorn near us had the parks’ permanent caches loaded on them by volunteers. The serial to USB cable connection is a big drawback to the units. Don’t know how the parks are handling it if people want to find close caches that are off the property.
When checked-out units are returned, I would think that someone in the park office would know how to check them over, maybe remove any extra waypoints, erase tracks, make sure battery power is OK.
As far as multis go, if there was anything in the instruction hand-outs on how to mark waypoints and change the coords, that would be easy enough to do by hand on the units. Most first-timers probably wouldn’t want to start off with a multi, though, but I’d still include them. They’re part of the park’s geocaching experience.
Does the Rat have a license for that cache? And was it of legal size? And did he get da turdy-pointer?
Naw, it was da 1500-pointer! Congrats on the milestone, Pete!
Congratulations on #400, Jim! And if any of you have the occasion to read Jar42’s logs, as we frequently do in central Wisconsin, they are mostly short and to the point, but quite often contain a bit of a zinger in them. Love that understated sense of humor!
We took the opportunity of a return from a caching trip Up Nort and a great caching day yesterday to look for some more of the many caches in Lake Wissota State Park. It was a lot less crowded than it was on Picnic Day, and a lot cooler, but a few geotrails still existed, and it was great looking back on the log sheets to see the names of all the people we met and enjoyed spending the day with at the picnic a couple of months ago.
And the park is still a great place to cache, so if you’re in the area, swing by to pick up a few more smileys if you didn’t get all of them in September or if you weren’t able to go to the picnic. Some of them are even “winter friendly”. 😈
Aren’t geofriends the greatest? 😀
This is the part I liked . . .

Yard work done. Caching road trip!
Welcome, jaango! REI recently started carrying some geocaching items, like TBs, containers. Don’t know what’s in the stores or what’s just online, but there’s an REI store near West Towne in Madison.
Looking forward to seeing a bunch of Lonely cachers again this year, but we thought the hosting honors went to the person who owned the most Lonely caches during the year. No lonely caches, no Lonely Cache game . . . QED, s|s is the permanent host of this event, yes? 😉
It’s the Wild Bunch! Wonder just how much snow and cold will slow down the geolivestrong group? (And don’t forget to go for that WS #6 now. 😈 )
Saving a few posts by congratulating you on #800 and #900 now. See ya here in a few weeks for the Big 1-0-0-0! 😆
Congratulations on #3000!

Congratulations!
Congratulations, Todd300! 8) 8) 8)

I’m wondering how this series made it on to the COTM Honorable Mention bookmark list and its not the end of the month!
(I noticed it a few days ago)
If a cache is nominated (win or lose), it makes it to the COTM Honorable Mention list. After the end of the month, if the series wins, I would imagine that the HM will be replaced with the COTM notation. “Battleship” was nominated; therefore, the least it could be is HM.
