I was just out running a few errands and putzing around the place outside, and it wasn’t too bad out.  Of course, I was all bundled up and came in a few times.  I would not have gone caching in this cold unless it was a bunch of drive-up P&Gs.  The suns helps it feel warmer, but we’ll wait to do those longer hikes when the thermometer agrees.

Not that I know of.  The groups are of all kinds, some open, some closed, some secret.  They are usually formed by area, but sometimes there is more than one.  Some people host more than one, too.  Some areas have no groups.  It’s nothing formal; they just all sprung up over time.

I get my Wisconsin caching fix from this WGA website and the forums here.  The posts are organized into topics, and the chat can go on in the off-topic.  It’s so hard for me to keep track of what is going on in the Facebook groups.  Being from central Wisconsin, I guess I’m partial to all parts of the state and also to none of them.  And there is no central Wisconsin FB group.

I believe you are from the Milwaukee area, Cinnamongirl, so maybe someone from a FB group in that area can give you more details and an invite or whatever they do.  (Just keep coming back here, though.  It’s the best place.  😀 )

Noonan, You’re now situated to be pretty close to the Block Party. Can we have a Noonan event? Like a Thread Stealers flash mob?

Our tentative travel plans are going to take us to Noonanville in the summer of 2016 sometime.  Too late for any block party, but we could still hit a Noonan event.  😉 That would be much more enjoyable than a block party anyway.

Why does garbage day have to be so cold?  😕

Geocaching is a recreational activity for us.  If it is not enjoyable, we don’t do it.  It is not enjoyable to be out in super sub-zero temperatures, so we don’t go out in this.  Those of us who have been around a while know how much fun seldom|seen and Sagasu were having all those years ago, so it was perfectly normal for them to be out in the cold… or the wee hours of the morning… or whenever.  Different strokes for different folks.  (I had forgotten all about the raboons!)

Nice, TN.  It would also help if anyone who is part of any Facebook group(s) could refer any appropriate questions to the WGA forums.  For instance, if someone in a group you are in asks something about what the best GPS receiver to get might be, sure, share in that group, but also suggest… “Hey, you could reach a lot more people if you would also ask that same question in the WGA forums.  They have topics for General, for Help, for Technology, and whole bunch of others there.  Give it a try!”

There are many good reasons for local groups, and many topics in those might be of more interest to the locals than to the general Wisconsin caching population, but it doesn’t hurt to let the locals, especially the newbies, know that there is one big umbrella organization for the state, and the main website isn’t on Facebook.

BTW, I like the social shout-outs and other official information put out on the official WGA FB site.  It’s also the go-to place when the site is down (which hasn’t been very often lately, thanks to The Cat and The Squirrel).  However, I’m not sure if all the people who view the “other” WGA site on FB know that that one isn’t officially put out, maintained, or always viewed by the WGA, although a WGA member is in charge of that site.

Hardly.  🙄  … as if I ever need a reason to be crabby.

Noonan, as long as you are not giving weather reports from a beach somewhere, I can enjoy your balmy updates.

We’re planning to come but I want to hit up the State Parks that are kind of on the way.

There are no state parks “kind of on the way.”  You will have to go out of your way to visit them.  Make sure you leave time to enjoy the event itself.

                              There was a time…

When group adventures were initiated and planned in the WGA forums.  Those of us who didn’t go could still enjoy watching the planning and reading about all that went on during the outings.  Anyone from around the state who frequented the WGA forums knew about these group caching adventures and could join in.  Remember the visits to “Eagle Source”, “Marsh to the Philippines”, and “Mawikwe Sea Caves” (from the trail above)?  I didn’t go on any of those, but I could feel like I was there.

                              There was a time…

When cachers came to the WGA forums for ideas of neat caches to look for along the way on trips that they were taking with their families.  Not only would people ask for ideas for those trips or even ones just around the state, but there were plenty of ANSWERS!  The WGA was just that… for all of Wisconsin.  Heading to Milwaukee or Up North or to the Eau Claire area or anywhere… What are some good things to see from those of you who live there?

                              There was at time…

When cachers asked for help in making up cache pages or trying out ideas or some of the technology involved…. How to write html code or upload images or use GSAK.  Newer cachers asked for and got answers in these forums.  More experienced cachers would share what they had learned or asked about things they had forgotten.  Even if you didn’t know where to look for answers and thought you might look silly asking something basic, there would be someone to point you in the right direction.

                              There was a time…

When we all would celebrate what was good about Wisconsin geocaching, who reached milestones (big or small), what were some of the neat caches that we could nominate for Cache of the Month.  We got to know who other cachers around the state were, and not just those who became good friends in the Thread Stealers.  We would reach out to others, and we didn’t care where they were from.  All we cared about was that they liked geocaching, and that they especially liked Wisconsin caching!

                              There was a time…

When the sum of all parts was greater than the whole.  Now there is not even the sum of all parts… just a bunch of parts.  Read the mission statement on the home page of this wonderful new website (The Squirrel is pictured there).  The WGA is home to all Wisconsin cachers (and friends).  It’s one-stop shopping.  It’s so much friendlier than the Groundspeak forums, and Wisconsin hasn’t felt the need to split its organization into smaller groupings as other states have.

We have a snazzy new website here.  Unlike the Book of Faces, this website doesn’t decide which posts you get to see and which you don’t.  There are no ads, and the bots and purveyors of odd products are kept at bay.  No one will unfriend you here, and it is a Kardashian-free zone.  If you are a lurker, keep on coming back.  At some point you will find something that gets you posting.  If you are a regular, I’m preaching to the choir, but it’s a great-sounding choir!  If you are a BOD member, use your position to lead and provide for a better experience for all Wisconsin geocachers (and friends).

                                SL, What was/is Darth?

A complete new transmission has been ordered and will be put in on Monday.  We can pick it up on the 24th (we hope).  All covered by the warranty.  They gave us a loaner car, but they don’t want us driving it too much, so we will be putting a few more miles on the 2005 Focus, which still runs great!

They don’t know what went wrong.  Black goo on the driveway, not wanting to shift into gear upon starting.  The transmission in this vehicle is completely enclosed.  We hadn’t taken it anywhere where something could have happened to it.  Guess they’ll perform an “autopsy” after they get the old transmission out.
