I think a little too much importance can be place on first finds. I had my fill of that while hidden transmitter hunting. Or like what orienteering has become from what it was taught to me back in my Scouting days. I’d hate to see Geocaching become a foot race and a knock-down drag-out fight to be first.
I like CC’s second idea.
Did you follow the cache in Illinois named “Integrity”? It started with $100 and ended up with something like $135. Lots of publicity so we were all impressed that it wasn’t taken through the month.
I suppose another way of looking at limited access (private) caches would be that they are a premium. I have mixed feelings about private caches on public land but they allow private picnics too. At least I get chased out when I wander in looking for public food and beer.

WaukeshaWhile driving to Indiana today, watching all the multi-car pile-ups, I thought about two levels of Geocachers. Novices who can hunt public hunts and then once a certain number of caches are logged and verified, you are allowed to access a private listing of secret caches. This would be one way of carrying through “don’t ask and don’t tell”. It seems to me that once hiders are required to get permission, the fun is greatly reduced. I could live with an official map of “Geocaching allowed” areas of each state park, but having to track down a ranger really rains on the fun.

WaukeshaIf there is going to be a meeting by the state concerning this, I wonder if any of us could attend. I don’t know if such meeting by DNR and similar agencies fall under the open meeting laws.

WaukeshaI don’t like the official reply. But as I mentioned in a post elsewhere titled “Sooner or Later…” this potential problem will have to be addressed by Geocachers and it looks like it will have to be sooner rather than later. I am very pleased to see you people take the initiative to gather a group of us. I think a proactive response informing this state official on policies of Geocaching.com regarding caches and our commitment to be sensitive to the environment may go a long way in not being limited to one cache which of course means having to register with them or else be a lawbreaker. Further, it appears that with state budget cuts, many government agencies may be consolidated. Today I heard a recommendation for county parks in SE Wisconsin to be consolidated. This is good but should any one of them formulate a policy on Geocaching, I fear it will carry over to the consolidation. So, it behoves us to be proactive.

WaukeshaWould you believe… that this past weekend I was working on a multi-cache hunt on the strawberry rustic road? The state has patches that they award for taking a picture of your motorcycle by a RR sign. I’ve logged a good portion of the ones in the state. I want to get some of my club members that have Street Guides to go on some caches and maybe work towards some patches. I’m going to make the cache include something to draw Goldwingers from around the area. I’ll be announcing it on various motorcycle websites. So, just to let you know that I’ve been working on this idea for some time now and am not trying to butt into your area.
