Seekers: There are several caches in the Granville dog park hid by GR8eyes that I recommend, see:GCP6FN. There is also a series of 3 caches in a park called behind the barn by lego lover, see:GCRZWH. 😛

Hey Russell, I’ve been reading the same Gc.com thread started by Criminal and here is my take on it.

First off, he seemed to be concerned about people logging temp caches on archived cahes that are no longer active. This is certainly NOT the way I log my temp finds at events. But apparently this practice bothers many people and I can understand why.

I was always taught to log my temp caches by hitting the “attended” button for each one. This method does NOT inflate your true find count. If you check my profile you will see it says I have 496 finds. But if you click on it and go further to the page that breaks down the finds by several catergories, you will see that over 100 of those are event caches. A certain number are multi-cache finds, traditional finds, virtual finds, etc, Also, when I log my temp caches under attended, I do NOT recieve a “coveted smiley” but an icon of a couple holding hands which I think is much more roamantic anyway or at least the Bond Girl does.

So to recap, anyone who wishes to compete agasinst me and compare find counts can easily do so. But as has already been pointed out by others, There really are no rules, just guidelines. In that GC.com thread were several errors in logic that several posters espoused, too many for mine one finger typing skill to cover here. Suffice it to say that it seems to me that there are way to many folks willing to criticize others by geocaching with a keyboard than by going out with a GPSr and really showing the rest of us how good they are.

Due to a very last minute cancellation of a previously scheduled event, Sean Connery and the Bond Girl will be able to attend. Looking forward to a fun day.

Ken: I’d be happy to loan you my old Garmin 12 XL. It’s black & white and only has a built in base map but I do have a serial cord for it, so it can download waypoints off GSAK. Let me know if you need it.

Hi There, Hey there, Ho there: I just did a few along the root river parkway which is close to West Allis. It is a biking/hiking/walking trail on the southside of town. Check: Root River Dew amd Grandpa’s Tool Exchange. These two should lead you to several more along this trail. Good Luck and enjoy winter in Wisconsin.

Russell, would you please stop! You’re making me look bad. Seriously, Congrats good buddy. I love the competition. Seriously now, STOP or else!!!

in reply to: Why do you cache? What do you get out of it? #1760018

Well, today is the one year anniversary of when I began geocaching so I will render some of my thoughts on the subject. Like a couple of the above poster’s, I too read a newspaper article on geocaching that mentioned hiking in the woods and finding a “treasure” at the end of the hike. Cool! The Bond Girl and I have always enjoyed hiking in the woods so ehat a great bonus.

I already had a gpsr that I bought some years ago for deer hunting but which otherwise just sat on the shelf collecting dust. So, after logging onto gc.com and finding there were many caches nearby, I went after a few on my own. And lo and behold I discovered that I was being led to places in my area that I never knew existed.

I also love challenging my search skills against others. It didn’t take long to decide to upgrade my gpsr to the 60cs with city select mapping software and purchase NG Topo Wisconsin, as well as GSAK and a premium membership.

Sharing my addiction with the Bond Girl has been a double edged sword so to speak. While she enjoys going geocaching, she doesn’t enjoy competive geocaching at all. This forces me to tone done my hardcharging ways. We go back and forth on this issue, but so far she has stayed with me.

I look to the future with anticipation of other great events, and meeting other great cachers. Both the Bond Girl and I have greatly enjoyed meeting so many of you at the events and wish you all Happy GeoCaching!

in reply to: How do you explain geocaching? #1740870

That’s what I ‘ve been doing wrong all this time. Dang!
Seriously, Ron you do a great job of explaining geocaching, so don’t sweat it so much. If people really have an interest and at leat half a brain, they’ll figure it out. Though I attended one of your seminars, I actually started geocaching after reading a brief newspaper article on it. Of course I was fortunate to already have an old Garmin 12xl to get started with.

Where’s the doggie treats? They promised me doggie treats. I knew I should have never trusted a Magellan user! From now on, I’ll find my own caches.

in reply to: Opinions Needed: Pin on Buttons #1740773

Ron, I would go with the “event specific” button. I don’t know if we’ll make the event, but it sounds like a lot of fun – good luck!

in reply to: Picnic Thanks #1759456

Just a note to thank everyone who worked to put together this fun event. This is our kind of caching, out in the woods, on the trails. (When we were on the trails). Met a lot of great people and it was nice to chat with them and locate some of the caches with them. We especially enjoyed sharing the trails with “Shrek”, “Big M & Little M” and “Smokey and The Teacher”. Thank you also to Brian, who helped with our GPS unit questions. We would really like to see a period of time at events, or at a separate event, for educational sharing. There is much to learn and so much experience to be shared with the newer cachers. We should mention, it was nice to have lunch with “2 of His”, who are also newer to the sport. Thanks again for a GREAT day of caches.
