In other words, ask local cacher for help and maybe find some that will drop prizes for you
Somehow the point I try to make never comes across quite as I intend it or the intent isn’t understood.
I was suggesting using local caches and cache owners to help you out. Nope won’t work.
Then Pete suggests using local caches and cache owners to help you out. Yup, Great Idea.
Thanks Pete for formulating a solution to the basic tenants of my suggestion that would work and are more clearly understood!

06/29/2009 at 12:45 pm in reply to: Seeking geocacher hider for private event in door county #1910225There are tons of great Geocaches placed throughout the Door County Peninsula already which could serve you quite nicely.
I suggest generating a list of the area caches and choosing a few favorites based on whatever criteria suits your purposes. Perform a Pocket Query for a hundred mile radius of the wedding location. You could limit your list to 1/1 or maybe 2/2 T/D at the high end and see what shows up. Then, go out and find those caches or ask other Door County cachers about them and select the top 5 of the bunch. Maybe this task could be sequestered, as you suggest, for compensation.
Then, simply drop a “Stamper” or a “Punch” available at most craft stores into each of the five for your wedding party to find and mark a score card that you create. A simple index card with boxes is sufficient. You decide the rules of play. You can also drop coins into those caches just prior to the weekend with specific instruction to leave in the cache for “so-and-so”. Not an absolute guarantee that they’ll be there, but likely they will.
This gives the first-times a genuine Wisconsin Geocaching experience instead of a watered-down, “we placed this series for the wedding party” experience.
Took me a while to get back to this.
I appreciate all of the comments and suggestions and knew that I spoke for many cache hiders when I brought the topic up.
I am very pleased, especially, with the well-thought out suggestions by Annie which shows just how “WORTHWHILE” this thread is. If a poster to a thread can come up with that many potential viable options to better educate the newbiees, what more is there for the BOD to do, but to review and implement?
How about a series of Pathtags instead of buttons? One for each “Great Caching Ethic”. Just like the caching practice tags below. We could do a small fundraiser to develop a series of 5 or 6 tags (some like the samples and some new depending on the discussion) and all branded with the WGA logo, of course. Hand those out at functions as door prizes or awards and they will leave an impact.
I do hope the BOD is not only following this thread but taking seriously the suggestions therein. The LCG has been mostly successful in its mission to better the overall quality and condition of Wisconsin Geocaches. These suggestions could have the same positive effect.
I’ll be watching…

and a MINIMUM of, say 20 finds
Many that have ended up on the list are most likely COTM “worthy” caches. Take for instance Roter Eulenflug (typing off memory so I apologize if I killed this name) by seldom | seen (nominated last month I believe). Worthy of a COTM. Probably (I dnfed it so I cannot fully form an opinion as of yet). Ever going to win a popularity contest vote? Nope. The numbers aren’t there unless one “solicits”.
However, the act of nominating a COTM (like the example above) currently gets the cache bookmarked and as such has value. If there is to be a “screening” of nominations we should not deny the nomination being recognized nor should we deny the bookmark addition of a nominated cache.
While many of mine have been nominated, I have yet to receive a COTM win on a cache that was solely of my making. I have long ago reconciled this with the knowledge that the average number of visits on my puzzle caches rarely exceeds 10 (until Marc goes touring) and subsequently that I will likely never get a win. Also, because I have been witness to the behind the scenes shenanigans, I have actually told others who inquired, not to vote for my caches.
Now, having said that, I do appreciate the nominations, because they are well-intentioned – like said nominee “Roter Euleflug”. If 30 people HAD done that cache, I suspect that vast majority would have voted for it. But who of that 30 would even be aware that it was nominated? 5, maybe less? Unless by some solicitation via e-mail or phone to get the numbers up.
Many of you have done a few of my caches and a few of you have done many of them. All of you should know that I want you to enjoy the experience and the find, and yes, occasionally the final, and that’s the reward I get when I read most of the logs, especially from those who can fathom what I put into my caches and are kind enough and respectful enough to say as much in their logs. As for the rest of you copy paster- touring types… you can go vote for next months COTM!

So, how about a little ‘quality over quantity’? Come on over to Selzzup, and have a ‘dangerous daze’ cache run. We can do all S|S caches, anyone of which might kill you!
Climbing trees, crawling in tunnels, down rabbit holes, along cliff edges, whatever!
Well Mr. 5 digits, I’m happy to report that I have placed a cache just for you that includes all of the above, is a puzzle with a challenge ALR and is just going to be sitting there waiting for you to go grab it. Maybe some night when you are All Strung Out from working on your mind-reading madness you can grab your flashlight, rock climbing powder, spelunking helmet and rappelling rope and go after it. What do you say, Old Man?
Holy Crap! We’re going on Saturday, but wont make it down there til midday. Man I hope no one snags them by then!!!!

Alex, thanks, that I can probably do!
Just remember that the final location of the one of which I speak has moved…
It’s also quite simple to do mathematically. Let’s say you have the location of 3 caches and need to use them to triangulate the location of a fourth.
Covert your cords to decimal minutes and then apply the following:
Cache A [N˚W˚/3] + Cache B [N˚W˚/3] + Cache C [N˚W˚/3] = Cache D N˚W˚
It’s that easy, really!
I’ve found a couple, but only unpublished one’s and typically when I’m out scouting and I do a fair bit of that.
Makes you wonder how many pre-published caches are out there that never get published and stay in the field. I was just informed by Jay Vosters of High Cliff that he located a couple caches he didn’t have forms for. I checked the locations and they are not published, even though there’s nothing close to them. They weren’t Temps from the Campout either. I’ll be checking those soon.
I’ve found one letterbox and know many who’ve found them by accident. And I think the Geocaching community does not re-hide caches as well as they should! It is telling when 2 recent letterboxes by a new hider have come up missing. You’d think people who take time to carve stamps would make darn sure their hiding spots are as good as they can be, but even the one in Pierce Park was essentially right out in the open. Perhaps that’s because their clues are so vague you have to spot the cache from a 1/10 mile away to make the find…

…or something else…
Happy to see a Lil’ Otter post and am nodding my head in complete agreement. Chasing numbers is not the only addictive aspect of the game either, add to it the LCG and creating Puzzles, two that I’ve been infected with but have managed to stave off to some degree. I’ve tried to temper my zeal for creating new Puzzles, but it hasn’t really worked out so far. The LCG I’ve been able to back-burner quite easily, especially when the lead has been so far out of reach. But just yesterday I went out and with a few hours to kill, got that hook right back in my mouth!
It’s cyclic in some ways, and you just have to learn to balance it with your other life, and that can be tougher than beating a smack addiction…

If seldom|seen wins the letterbox, he may NOT use the stamp for any of his existing letterboxes!!!
Letterbox? I don’t need no stinking letterbox!
