    OK, so it isn’t in the middle of the “Bermuda” Triangle…

    Yak Boy Lives! Maybe that will keep the lil brother from putting out more of those crazy Sudoku’s for which he is legend.

    The jig is up, Zoesbrotehr did find Start Yer Yakin yesterday and did have some assistance. For those of you who read his initial found it log, I hope you can appreciate why I pulled it soon after. Discretion is the better part of Caching!

    Anyway, look for Zoe’s abbreviated Tale Tall today about his adventures at the Start of his Yakin’ career. And congratulations on your #600 and particularly on going for this one as your milestone, despite the myriad obstacles before you. It is a tale that needs to be told, only with not so much direct reference to your helper 😉

    Yes, on adopted caches that I fealt didn’t do justice to the area or coule be better. 2 examples.

    1. Stevens Point Micros – Pfiffner/Pioneer Park. Nano on a bench. The previous owner said the intent was to get people to go to the park which is good, but when I found it I went straight to the nano, logged it and left.

    I spent 6 years at the University in Point and even organized concert events at this park called “Jamnesty” for Amnesty International. Yet, despite all that, I had never read the Historical markers or Informational plaques (although I think those were not here when I went to school) and was amazed at what I missed. I archived the nano and created a puzzle that necessitates a reading of most of the markers in the park, “On Point | The Whole Point”

    2. Bridgemaster’s Quarters in Menasha. A muggle-prone cache although a good hide. Here again is another case of so much good bridge related history in the area that was getting passed up. The hide was the right spot and also needed to be moved to prevent muggling. Archived the old one and created the new puzzle, “Laughing Waters | Bridge Tender Quarters”

    I don’t do it often, but when I do it is to make more of an area than the existing cache did, just as Team Deejay alluded to. If my caches don’t have any recurring issues, they will stay as they are or get slight modifications to improve them, but rarely will I archive just to put out a new one. There’s a billion good locations around here despite the saturation, you just have to know where to look and get creative on your hides…

    I love cemetery caches. They, however don’t like me. I have more problems in cemeteries than any other place as far as my GPSr bouncing all over the place. I am willing to bet that about 70% of the time, I will have at least three different GZs more than 20ft apart. Personally I think there are quite a few practical jokers buried in these cemeteries, and when they see me coming, they know there will at least one more laugh.

    It may not be your GPS. It helps if the solves for the finals on offset cemetery caches are accurate too!

    2000… You are crazy old man! But then, look who’s talkin…

    I suppose I’d better get cranking on your tribute 2000th find. I know right where I’m gonna put that sucker too, in the middle of the Bermuda Triangle!!!!!

    Congrats and slow down on those dang lonliess, you gotta give me some time to catch up.

    Just got the Kifaru catalouge. WOW, that’s some great stuff. Amazed at the size and weight of the collapseable stove! Expansive stuff though.

    Looks like I get to borrow a GP Medium this winter, heavy bugger that it is. In the meantime I’m going to continue looking for something a bit more manageable in size and weight.

    in reply to: New WGA Logo Referendum, Round 2 #1891158

    I’ve given my share of input on this topic and referendum. We are at a crucial stage where the WGA needs to make a couple important decisions before any forward progress can be made. I am content to wait until they have time to make a well-vetted descision, but do hope that coming to those decisions doesn’t drag on for too long, resulting in a loss of whatever momentum we had in the spring when this logo ball started rolling.

    Yeah, interesting side topic.

    Dark Raider (Robin’s 6 year old) does like to find swag, and it is one of his main objectives. Unexpectedly, he also likes cemetery caches and looking at the stones. He also likes caches where he gets to climb a tree. He hasnt gotten a chance to do any real cool containers yet, so maybe next time I head to the Fox River Valley, he will have to ride along. (I am quite sure he would have loved Hoist That Rag, a very cool Fox Valley cache that I visited yesterday.)

    Pulled this from the thread starter about micro’s. I’m detecting a theme here that young boys anywhere from 6-16 love to climb trees (just like this 38 yr. old boy does) and think I nailed it on the head with the PUC caches (Parent Unfriendly Cache), being that many of them are barking up the right tree.

    Well, it was certainly more creative… almost makes me wish I had come up with it… wait, now I’m confusing the thread readers…

    I kind of liked the pen container too. i still have it, and will likely recycle it as a cache when I find the write spot.

    zuma

    What? You mean you actually DID replace the container? I can’t tell fact from fiction anymore….

    Just so anybody reading this thread and the cache logs is clear, my cache replacement log was BS. When I got to the cache, the pen was hanging where the cache was supposed to be and where, back in April, I had gotten permission from Marc to replace it. But I held off to see if he any anybody else could find it before it showed up on the lonely list. They didn’t and it did and I was just far too slow out of the gate to get there to replace it. I LOVED the cache container and thought it should have remained in place.

    could be wrong here, and I am certainly not a lawyer, but wouldn’t use of this “G” or one very similar to it open up the Association to a lawsuit for a logo infringement or something of the like?

    there’s also a restaurant type place in Appleton that has a very similar logo but the colors are different and there is a curve on the “straight part” of the “big G” but otherwise it resembles the packer G as well.

    It would be cool if the new logo used the letters WGA and the G was “packerish” though…

    STOP.

    1. No logo has been chosen yet.
    2. Top design vote winner LOOKS LIKE (read “not is a”) plagerized version of WA logo. Anybody want to argue that point?
    3. Second place winner is a stylized “g” that looks nothing like the Packers logo and SHOULDN’T. It also needs one last round of scrutiny by a graphic designer. We have many WGA members who wear that hat.

    The solution seems obvious: If the only thing that is standing in the way of moving forward on a refinement of the chosen “g” option is $, than forget about calling in a design agency and INSTEAD move into one final round of logo revisions by any interested designers within the WGA body. Have them sumbit 1 or 2 versions of the stylized “g” logo. This would accomplish the same goals that hiring an outside agency would with some added benefits;

    1. Moves the logo forward
    2. Does not cost anything
    3. Involves some of the designers who put time into the effort, previously
    4. Results in a final logo choice that is voted on by the WGA body.

    Hey, that sounds like a campout competition. Stcik you hand in a grab bag of junk and see what kind of cache container you can come up with in one hour.

    in reply to: New WGA Logo Referendum, Round 2 #1891138

    Round and round we go.

    Seems like a decision to go down the Design Firm path would have been wise at the beginning and I don’t know how wise it is now to turn around and backtrack a hundred miles being this far down the road. But then, we are geocachers…

    All of these concerns were voiced early in the process and many members felt that the WGA should take this to the professionals, It was decided to not go that way for cost reasons and also to involve the talent pool of the designers amonstg us. Not necessarily a bad decision, as we do have some strong options.

    I think coming up with G variants and even a W variant of the chosen concept is well within the bounds of exploration of a final logo based on a chosen concept.

    I don’t think we should be asking a design firm to start from scratch as that, in my mind, opens up the possibility for all of the effort to date to be tossed aside in the favor of an entirely new design, not put forth by the body. And that is not the chosen path of the WGA board. Some decisions we need to live with.

    Also remember, it’s not finished yet. I’d strongly urge the WGA board to consider having a professional agency take the winning design and develop a few final variants for the WGA body to choose from. Just because the logo appeared prematurely on an event t-shirt, does not mean that it should just be left alone and not taken through the final step to a final polished design.

    Thanks for the input S/S, especially since you are especially experienced in this area. Can you describe in greater detail the process that you would suggest for moving forward?

    zuma

    If we accept that the “concept” of the cheesehead dave option, the vote winner, is too similar to the existing logo for Washington state (something that should have been pointed out to the whole body before the referendum vote), and I would would strongly argue that it is;

    And we accept that the 2nd place winner is going to be the “concept” for the new Wisconsin logo;

    Then I would suggest a poll to solicit input from the general body of the period of one week, asking what it is they like about it and what it is they don’t like about it. There seems to be some concern that it is “girlie” which I don’t see, but is a concern if members are bringing it up. As designers, we don’t always have the capacity to step away from the design and external reactions are vital to developing a final logo.

    This process brings up issues of similarity, like the “gospel” logo and the pill-bottle in my logo looking like something else that we wouldn’t want representing our state – talk about “girlie”!

    From there, I’d suggest taking it to a design firm to finalize a half dozen variants for the general body to vote on and make the final decision. As we are already at an approved concept, this final step should not be as costly as it would be starting from scratch as we are already 80% of the way there. A couple hundred dollars, tops.

    If you are interested, I can provide a quote and samples of the work we do, but you should probably source 3 firms and solicit quotes and sample work based on the concept and desire for 3-4 variants. Go with the best balance of quality work and cost of work.
