In case ya didn’t notice, one of the caches that initiated this thread was recently force-archived. But at least the local geocommunity didn’t have to go pick up the geo-litter (this time, anyway)…

Thanks for the bump, I re-read most of the thread before I realized how much of a bump it was when I got to my own lengthy post. Whew, was that a read!

It is interesting to see how this is shaping up so far. What I see being favorited is:

    a. Caches involving journeys to/through interesting terrain (multis, hikes, water caches, tree climbing, etc.)
    b. Interesting containers / hides
    c. Interesting puzzles
    d. Historical/scientific/cultural sites
    e. Collection type mystery caches (i.e. Battleship)

What I don’t see much of:

    a. Power trail type caches
    b. Extremely difficult puzzles
    c. Extremely difficult hides (there are a few)
    d. Urban micros
    e. Cemetery hides (a few)
    e. Caches hidden “en masse” (you all know what I mean; even when these are good, they are tough to remember)
    f. People just favoriting their friend’s caches (I did see one example of this. There is a knucklehead in every crowd.)

Even as I stray down toward Chicago, I see basically the same thing. Nobody is wasting time putting a favorite tag on a parking lot or lamp post hide. Let’s hope folks can keep up their standards as more people find the feature.

Here here! Let the naysayers say “nay”, but hooray for the rest of us… us and our 170,000 “favorites” applied, 90% or better having some worthy significance to the favoritier, even if it may be insignificant to the rest of us.

All I have to say is, “what the hell is going on within the WGA and Groundspeak as a whole?” Years of hearing myself speak in the echo chamber about a rating system and about foundations of design with not a whole lot of action or action counter to my intuition at least, (like striking ALR’s), and suddenly the pendulum swings, HEAVILY, in my direction.

I don’t get it? Is someone finally paying attention to us? Man, it makes me want to get caching and creating again…

Case in point…how many cachers know that it is against the “rules” to bury a cache in the ground? How many actually know the definition of a buried cache? Many cachers think you can dig a hole in the ground, place a 5 gallon bucked in the hole, and backfill around the hole with only the top exposed. They think this is not a buried cache because the top of the cache is not covered by dirt. They are wrong. Simply review the cache placement guidelines or talk to one of he friendly reviewers.

Depends on how you interpret the “Cache Listing Requirements / Guidelines”, doesn’t it? If I use my fingers to dig us some loose debris or even some friable topsoil, a la Real Gone | Sins of my Father, and “bury” it in that debris without covering it in “soil”, then I think I’m within the stated guidelines as I haven’t used a “pointy” object, just my blunt phalanges. The same holds true for others of mine that can be found under a rock to keep them from being muggled. If I dig by hand, and do not cover with soil, then as far as I’m concerned, I haven’t violated the placement guidelines. But then that’s my interpretation, not yours.

As far as the Favorites go, sure it’s open to abuse, but I thinks it’s far better than a “rating” system as it is more objective. If you add a cache as a favorite, I suspect that something about finding it must have left an impression. I just went though almost 900 finds and couldn’t remember 90% of them with any clarity. The ones I could remember, whether an exceptional cache or not, left an impression on me and a number of them went on my favorite list.

This is a marked improvement on the COTM month system the relies on word of mouth or wi-geo.com traffic since it is GC.com wide and everyone, WGA members and non, will be seeing, and hopefully many using, the favorites tag as a means to screen worthwhile caches for their outings. I know I will.

I’d suggest ignoring this one, and any others by this Team. Let them fade into obscurity like their owners who still find time to find some, but have no time to maintain their failing and rotting caches nor EVER respond to any requests for help or adoption. Many would agree this is a pure shame since a majority of theirs are creative and worthwhile in concept. But the stain and smell of a delinquent and silent owner is hard to overcome.

No such thing as a stupid question, and it never hurts to ask. Well, maybe a tiny bit if you were anticipating different results.

I echo all of the above, in that the cons would likely outweigh the pros. Ego-brusing does happen in this community on occasion via the competitive venues already established and those bruises can last a while. Ask any LCG player who anticipated a win and was blind-sighted by a sandbagger.

We also have a system, though crippled by design, for recognizing great caches. COTM has improved a bit, but cannot account for great caches that get visited by few for one reason or another. However, the long-awaited, argued for and newly implemented “Favorites” function will. In the end, the best praise is what permeates through cache logs and will always be the best wall for de facto Hall of Fame cachers… hiders and seekers both.

in reply to: How do you set up your own? #1936827

Actually, there is no builder for the Mac that I can use as I have reached a ceiling on my older G5. I cannot upgrade to Intel based system until I buy a new computer and am maxed out at OSX 10.4. This leaves me with a HTC phone I can’t sync, meaning no music or contacts from my system and a whole slew of other latency issues I’ve been dealing with of late. At some point I have to bit the bullet…

So, I decided that I would give it a shot a work, off hours, using my PC workstation there. Used the most recent Builder and everything seemed to work just fine. However, since I haven’t field tested, I can’t be sure it will work in practice. I was able to build and test using the Emulator in just a few hours, which is all I wanted to put in at this point until I know that I have a good handle on it.

So, CJ, if you want to give it a dry run, go for it. The cartridge is already published on Whereigo while the GC listing is pending. Would be nice to know how well it works and how close my hot spots are and if they need adjustment.

in reply to: How do you set up your own? #1936824

    Dry run went well.

Guess I have some logic and sense of how this stuff works. Spent about and hour getting my first cartridge set up and it seems to test out fine in the Emulator. But the real world I am sure is a different story.

Duplicate Bridge Tournament is being replaced as a WhereIGo just to get a feel for these things. Pretty simple cartridge with nothing more than proximity triggers and object calls. When I get to the Artisans of Appleton WIG’s it’s gonna get quite a bit more complicated with Q&A tasks, but after reading all the threads on people’s frustrations with building cartridges, I’m pretty relieved at this point to know that I can get a simple built in an hour.

I see this going Off Topic…

…ahheemmmm, back to the topic at hand. I do get the point made by benny, attributes are easy to add, so why not use them? I’m not much of a cache hunter and not sure how much attention I ever gave attributes unless they show up on T4 or batter caches where any water sign is helpful, but I can understand how most cachers use them as valuable insight and fair warning markers. Maybe that’s why I like to play with them a little. With my urban hides, attributes are not all that critical anyway.

But then I’m not one to expect or even desire absolute cords with every possible seasonal scenario laid out for me at GZ either. If there isn’t much of a challenge presented, then what’s the point IMHO?

in reply to: Logo varients #1940250

As I suspected, of those polled to date who have an opinion, other than “I don’t care”, 76% favor the idea of voting on a logo change and only 24% don’t favor it. This suggests to me that a clear majority of those who voted would like to swap the current version with the better full color t-shirt version. Enough said for the time being, this thread will get bumped up next year.

A handy website to look at when deciding which direction ya want to go to cache:

That certainly explains why there might be so many LCG’s in your area in summer. Who wants to trek through a foot and a half of snow to sign a frozen slip of paper, especially on a day like today? Well, OK, there are die-hards who consider it a challenge, but even the Puffins are staying indoors this week…

SO, I’m asking if you can please take the time to use the attributes. Especially the winter friendly one. Thanks for letting me vent!!

You’ll find I use attributes in unorthodox ways and they often don’t represent the real attributes of the listing. SO, I’d suggest ignoring any S|S cache you come across during winter, you’ll never know what you are in for.

That was easy, now all you need to do is steal the logo replacement idea and lock this thread 😆

in reply to: Logo varients #1940244

Sucked in too deep… again. No surprise there, the cold weather always seems to do that.

Believe it or not, I am trying to be constructive. This is nothing more that an opinion poll, so you’d expect to see many varied opinions, just as we have.

As Ralph said, there is nothing on the table and no motion to consider or referendum item to vote on.

As I stated previously, I don’t think this rises to the same level of WGA action that was required to carry out the logo contest and adoption this year.

I would never have brought it up again if it had not been for the post about website enhancements. But, having gotten into that discussion with the webmaster, who thought my opinions had merit, the issue of the multiple logo variants invariably came up. I was simply curious to see, PURELY from an impact and graphic standpoint, if the body as a whole favored, what is still in my mind, a simple swap of one logo variant with another.

Here we have a a great looking upgraded full-color dynamic logo with motion, action and correlations to Wisconsin’s outdoor activities, tied into geocaching, at our disposal. All I’m trying to find out is if there is any significant reason we shouldn’t use it to make our site look better and more inspiring? Reasons beyond “if it ain’t broke”, “who cares”, “we’re a small non-profit so don’t need a good looking logo”, or “no one is going to come to the website because of the logo”. If that’s where your head is at, you’re missing the crux of my question and this poll.
