My coins arrived well packed and looking great. Very nice job, thank you to all involved in getting them designed, created and shipped. They will make nice gifts for several people. Last Tuesday I gifted one to a very surprised scout who presented geocaching information to our troop as part of his Communication merit badge requirements. Four left. One for me, one for son, one for bro and one to turn loose someday.

Djwini, THANK YOU so much for the use of your GPSr. We had 12 boys show up, along with a few parents and split them into two teams. We gave each team an overall map with all of the caches and interim waypoints marked, a printed cache sheet for each of the four geocaches and two GPSs.

Neither Centennial park nor the toward Hartbrook park had been cleared at all so they were difficult. In fact, none of our teams found either cache. I used a clear film canister for the micro in the AHS tennis court area which also proved very difficult but was findable when we forced the teams to keep digging 😉 The final for “draw your own conclusion” was an ammo can I had put out this morning, chock full of goodies so each scout got a handful. Interesting stuff like waterproof match cases, whistles, emergency blankets, hacky sacks, match box cars, mini frisbees, decks of cards, etc. Everyone, scouts and parents had a blast – possibly the funniest part was when I almost couldn’t get out of a hip-deep snow drift – and really really appreciate the use of your GPS.

I’ll plan on swinging by with it tomorrow!

Thanks again, S.Karolek (1/4 of Cardinal Cachers)

Thanks, the offer is appreciated! I’ll send contact info via email and we’ll see what we can work out. I have two, plan on borrowing my brothers and bought a low-end etrex on eBay yesterday. Depending upon how many scouts sign up, I may or may not want a 5th. Will let you know next week Tuesday or Wednesday.

Bluesquirtles, are you still looking for a 2006 WI geocoin? I’ve got a couple and I might be willing to sell one or two. Where are you located?

This state has so much to offer it could be difficult to decide on a theme / design.

Ken, the obvious (to me 🙂 solution to that dilemma is to keep churning out coins 😉

And Tyedyeskyguy, the closest missing road I have found to us is Puetz Road in western Milwaukee County. The map database stops at the Root River, but the road actually runs all the way to 76th Street. (But then again, I am using Topo maps. Maybe the road is actually there in the Navteq DB.)

City Navigator v8 North America shows Puetz road running west all the way to Hy 100 – St. Martins Rd. Hopefully it doesn’t stop at 76th 😉

    Steve K ❓

I think I mentioned in another thread that I finally stalked a 60cx to the sub-$300 level on ebay last week. I was playing with it last night in the house and was shocked to see solid signals for *11* birds. Amazing. My eTrex Vista doesn’t get any signal in the house 🙁

Lots of these brand new in the box going for just over $300 plus shipping on ebay. I think it will be a while before we see prices drop significantly below that. Heck, there are people still paying retail and MSRP!

Last night I also scored a 1Gig microSD card for $25 plus shipping. I love ebay…

❗ AHA! I finally won an auction on ebay for a Garmin 60cx at a price I was willing to pay ($291.51) and I knew I had seen this reference to img2gps. I spent the last hour searching for the reference. I should have bookmarked the link when I first saw it. Anyway, thanks again for posting it so I too can use my Mapsource Metroguide v6 maps for routing on the 60cx when it arrives…

Have you tried the geocaching add-in for Google Earth? Shows caches in the vicinity of your current zoom…

Most would argue that I’ve never valued them 😉

I like that the software keeps track of the numbers.

I like that the software keeps track of my finds…I find myself paging back through them and rekindling the memories when I can’t get out to do real caching for a while. Or when I get done logging recent finds. Or other times.

I could care less about the numbers but I like having the tracking database and I like having it be a community database so I can see others’ comments about the caches.

I bought a few. OK, 10. One got registered as Matt’s Wisconsin Geocoin. It lives in my 11yr old son’s coin collection and will probably never see the light of the wild. One will be registered as my personal keepsake. My little brother mentioned he’d like to buy a few from me and the rest I’ll use somehow.

I like the idea of a “first finders” prize. Maybe one of these days I’ll plant my first cache and I could put one of these in, unregistered, for the first finder.

I’ll probably sell one or two to the highest bidder and release one or two into the wild eventually, most likely in a cache a ways away.

Brings to mind a cache I thought briefly about hunting near Snoqualmie Pass in Washington state. The owner stated clearly that they hid it suspended in a tree while snomobiling when there was at least 6 feet of snow on the mountain. I thought to myself “self, at 5’8″ there’s not a chance in you know where that you’ll get to that cache”. I thought long about the rating system… does one need a snomobile or 4 wheeler to get there? How about a ladder? Is 6′ of snow considered to be a “special equipment” requirement? I stopped thinking and moved along to the next cache which was “summer friendly” 😉

That’s awesome! I’ve used Google earth since it became available (also using Picasa) and this just takes the cake on integration!
